I used to be a corrections officer in a women’s prison and let me tell you there are so many broken women behind bars. Their stories would break your heart. I always tried to be as compassionate as I could with them. I was firm and wouldn’t take disrespect but I didn’t feel like one of those officers that had to be mean and hateful because they are already being punished. It wasn’t our place to punish them more unless they needed to be.

Thank ou for sharing the life story of Juie Ann Mabry. So devestatingly sad. The end was so scary and confronting - being put in the electric chair ...but then she was free and reunited with her mother. On her walk to death I thought it was so beautiful When the black lady said " Go home to your mother, she's waiting for you " what comfort that would have given Julie in that eact moment. To me It changed it from being her walk to death to being her walk home.

Beautiful movie- that ending made me cry! So many recent Hollywood films about the working class Midwest exploit or make fun of the place, but this movie captures it in a way that feels so authentic and lived-in. Execution of Julie Ann Mabry tells harsh truths about what it's like to be a woman in that world, but offers some hope too. I loved it.

I was abused as a kid and it profoundly affected my life ...my abuser manipulated me to keep quiet and I didnt know what to do.... i taught my child from a very young age that her body was special and belonged to her and noone could touch it without her permission. ....i also taught her the difference between good and bad secrets ...those that feel exciting and those that feel bad. As a teacher it would be deemed age inappropriate but i disagree. Children can be empowered in an age appropriate way so they can keep safe .... its not about taking away their iinnocence but preserving it.. If Id known what my child knew as a 5 year old I would have known it wasnt right and spoken out .... instead I lived in fear ...

The movie was based on a novel by Dorothy Allison. I'm still researching to find out if it's based on a true story, I think it is, but I'm not 100 percent sure. Puts me in mind of being married at 19 and my now ex husband and I was in church .. he Beat me so badly I lost several babies in my womb. The beatings were horrendous and happened daily if not every other day. I was made to apologize to the church in front of everyone with black eyes or where ever I was hurt .. This made me physically sick seeing this precious soul being abused..

What a sad life this girl had from beginning to end. Some things were not explained like what happened to her momma, Was the uncle held accountable, and what happened to her cousin for her to die. Was it suicide? Very sad she was faced with the prison guard taking advantage of her. She was almost ready to get out. She said it beautifully when she said "I have more freedom in here".I cried. May she be free high in the sky.

Love the way it was made, respecting that an audience doesn't need to see every second of the suffering, or the story spelling out to us. I swear I hardly even blinked throughout. I think the system of the USA claimed that only about 1/4 to 1/2 of children and adults are properly placed in those places . The children as well as convicted criminals do not deserve to be there . With the children , there is even more abuse that they receive in a " home " , and with prisoners in prison . . . well it's been more than disgraceful . It's no wonder to me when they get out , that they can't cope with life . No one worked with them about how things are now so they tend to go back to what they knew on the inside . Yes this includes the children in group homes . The only problem is they have developed or improved on being a criminal . Way to go USA ! ! ! To rehab is a joke . An honest person in authority ?? They are either paid off by a rich person or it's a " offer that can't be refused " by someone that will push their persona weight around . So shameful ! ! !

Thanks, Ms. LEE for posting this moviebtobyou tube. I felt so terrible that this young girl had to endure the hardships of her abusive dad, the uncle,:the guard. I have a question. When young kadycwaschsving the attack and needed her inhaler and no-one xamevto assist her. In my mind I felt like she was given an empty one as to cause her dying. She went to the guard complaining. I guess this shut her up permanently. Also, was it a known fact that during this time they used male guards and no females.? Very sad. Very sad. In prison, she found friends and had a purpose. I wonder what would happen in 2023. She had no voice bc who was really going to listen. 😢

Thank you for posting this comment! Yes, he did give her an empty inhaler on purpose. Yes, there are male guards in women's prisons.

Julie Ann had a tough life like alot of kids do & it sucks cause they think they have to put up with the abuse. Sad. I love how it seemed so much like real, average people. They didnt make them too pretty. She was average & they added religion like they did in 70s & early 80s. I hate that the aunt didnt kick her husband out or take off with Julie Ann. That would have been a good ending. Sad she didnt have the right kind of friend to talk to & keep her strong.

Thank you! The religion is exactly the way it used to be in the early 80s. You’re really insightful, thank you!

@@Katiemadonna3 Religion is still like that if you believe in that denomination . Religion hasn't gone anywhere ( people stopped going) . There are over 4000 religious groups all over the world all beleiving they are the truth .

@@Katiemadonna3 That church service is definitely NOT typical of a service in the 70s of any other decade. That was like some kind of travelling tent revival show run by scam artists.

This movie stands forever a mark on lives that can't go where they want . It's extremely sad , disgraceful , deliberately hateful and spiteful , appalling and pathetically evil just to name a few of the words that describe the horror that is so very unknown to most all people . This was a young girl who was abused by her father , the pedophile , removed by her mom to get away from him to end up abandoned by her mom in the middle of nowhere fending for herself the best she could . Then while Julie Ann was in a store , the clerk drives her to a " church going people " where that father crawled into bed with her to see how far he could go to get sex from her . That families oldest daughter took Julie Ann and drove to another to get away from that pedophile , to help her save some of her childhood only to get mixed up with drugs and prostitution to get money . The young adult male that was trying to be a friend at first is the one who helped her into that mess , got pregnant but lost the baby due to the drugs and not being able to eat right . Unfortunately , when she lost the baby she also lost any chance to have children . Then while she was having an emotional breakdown and thinking about suicide by gun , the young guy made a comment to her where she turned the gun , unfortunately in his direction , she was charged with murder and sent to prison with a life sentence . Her being in prison for 5 yrs had a clean record while there . Near the end of the story , one of the guards who got favors from another prisoner who ended up suffocating from asthma ? Anyway , this girl was cooking in the kitchen and that same guard went to her with sexual advances on her . In self defence , she did something that cost him his life . This in turn gave her a spot in line for the electric chair . In the end , she had been put to death . Does anyone see the wrong doing from the officials ? ? ? This girl / young woman didn't deserve to be in prison never mind be put to death . Her whole life has been nothing but abuse and tears , the only way she would kill anyone would have been in self defense . The young man wasn't doing right by her but him getting shot and killed was an unfortunately horrible accident . She didn't mean to kill him , she was aiming to commit suicide to be free from all her emotional pain . Ad Being honest , I would have done the same thing when it came to the guard . Be honest . . . what would you do in her place ? ? ? 😢. 😢. 😢. 😭. 😭 Julie Ann may you not just be in peace but also watch over those in the position you were in . May God Bless you and give peace from all the hurt you had . God loves you always . ❤️. 🙏 ❤️ ,😘

This was a sad sad movie. That guard tried to put the moves on her, that's why she killed him. Why do some men believe that that is OK? It's not, not even in prison. No one probable believed her anyway, since she killed her first boyfriend. She did not deserve to be executed. Maybe she didn't wanted to be released from prison. She did say she had more freedom in there then any place else.

This movie is heartbreaking 💔 !!!where was someone to step in to give this young girl hope and love ... It's sad that this happens in the USA. There are so many women in the prison system that had terrible life's that were young Julie's..And the help comes to late when something happens . Why can't there be help before this happens....

Some people ponder what their lot in life is . Power, money or beauty (Man kinds ways) Me ..If you don't hurt the precious children, the elderly & all animals ♥ u won't have a problem with me. I choose the Lords Ways . He gave u free will . I know I will get attacked 4 my personal views ; mostly because I am out numbered on social media dealing with the millions of youngsters who have no clue about fighting for Real Issues in their Life & attacking others opinions; instead of hiding behind a computer instead stand up & see the reality & fight 4 ur Country instead of crying its all about me.

I know the film is fictional however this movie is true to some. As a man now grown up, this movie was a bit to close to home, as I had a younger life full of disgusting abuse. So sad that ppl only see the crime that ppl commit and not look at there life's. I thankful I'm in the Uk 🇬🇧 as I would be on my 3rd strike when in my teens. I'm in my late 40s now and learned to forgive the system and all perpetrators. Sexaul Abuse fucks our life's up! Stop fucking kids life's up!!!
