PINNED COMMENT: Some people have been complaining about comments disappearing. As you probably would appreciate I use a strict comment filter on videos such as this, due to the shocking stuff you read in the comments section sometimes. If your comment has disappeared it is probably due to the filter. TheUntoldPast has always and will be a non-political channel. The only intention I have is to educate and bring stories of the Second World War and History to light.

@Icantstandelves Ahh well, it’s their channel and one persons non-political is different to another’s…current US politics is a case-in-point - one side are mainly bigoted racist liars. In WWII, all sides committed war crimes, some were worse than others, and only one side won and interprets most of the history. Comparing Soviet to current Russian behaviour is a fair equivalence - seems it’s a cultural issue

The same thing happened in the areas inhabited by Poles, but with a large German admixture: in Silesia and East Pomerania (Prussia). For Russian soldiers, everyone there was German. Meanwhile, Poles in these areas were first persecuted by Germans, and then oppressed by "liberators" on an equal footing with Germans.

@@skunkjobb Its not a strawman. The Nazi's mass murdered millions of soviet civilians including women and children commonly burning them alive inside of town centre buildings. Germany suffered for what they inflicted. Not surprising. There is little doubt US troops did it too though likely not systematically or on the same scale. WAR IS HELL. I have known people who saw this all directly. Not pretty. One I knew well, used to assassinate Nazi's and their companions during the wars years. He never spoke about it but I read a book written decades later about such things and it named him and him team. It marked and haunted him forever. The soviets had seen the same behaviour by the Axis forces in the Concentration camps. We are seeing it again with IDF doing the same enmasse with helpless Gazans. Humanity will never change. They will always justify it with this or that.

@@ewaj.6260 Thankyou for your comment. The women of Berlin, and especially of Germany got off very, very lightly. They were huge supporters of Hitler, who pretended he was single, while learning the malicious things Germans liked to hear. They were bystanders of the highest level. Watched their friends and neighbours being kicked ouf of school and jobs, beaten on the streets, being forced from their homes and rounded up. ready to disappear. I have seen footage of people gathering around and taking the belongings of those Jews. Many took rewards for things including turning in Jews. There were many thousands of informants..in countries occupied by terror as well. While Russian women and their children were being killed, starved to death and their villages burnt to the ground, all the German had to do was stay at home with their children and go to buy food. They lived in absolute luxury until AFTER the World War started by Germany. At the end of the war, Germans had a total victim mentality...moaning about how bad things were for THEMSELVES. Germans are still the SAME. They mostly love moaning, when they live with greater benefits and comfort than the the vast majority of the world. If nearly 2 million women went on to have children after the battle, they are SO, SO, SO lucky. They got off SO lightly. And I am happy for them that they lived...and had relatively good lives. I am glad the suicides were just due to shame....not because they had lost their grandparents parents, siblings, children and would soon die behind the "work makes you free" gates of camps they were in. The Jewish people in one line of my family history were tortured hugely between 1933 and there after. Most were killed, quickly or slowly. The Jews who both survived and returned to their homes, were abused and told to leave by the now German inhabitants receiving stolen goods. What lucky German women!!! Very little suffering compared to thd English with bombings, fire, and food shortages and forced into the labour force. These women look much thinner than the well fed Germans of 1945. All women in ALL the defeated and occupied countries. Women in other parts of the world- not even in Europe suffered from shortages and the loss of their best young men. India, Australia, U.S. Russia, Poland, Romania, Belgium, Norway, France, The Netherlands...entire countries of women suffered for more than 4 years!!! I am a lady not from any of those countries. I still suffer from past trauma of two World Wars and the German cruelty. Everyone around me does.

@@BrianWMay sure, the ones "liberated" by Red Army counterattacks. An account by Nina Markovna recalls mass rapes along with other war crimes when the Red Army recaptured Feodosia Ukraine in December 1941. She describes the German conduct months earlier more befitting of liberators than conquerors, and describes the horror and disgust of the German units that recaptured the town at witnessing the aftermath of the soviet atrocities. Also the only accounts of mass rapes on a similar scale in the West are of various Allied units, most infamously North Africans of French colonial units in Italy in 1944. Research into rape in Occupied France by German units indicates that was not common and was dealt with harshly as a breach of military discipline. Rape cases in France oddly enough skyrocketed as they were liberated in the latter half of 1944. A person in any case has to have a really sick mind to justify such atrocities because they claim the other side did so first.

It is interesting that Russian soldiers who at this point had family, friends and neighbors being tortured and killed by Stalin, felt the need to avenge their losses by going after German women and not Stalin. Stalin who exterminated millions of his own people was allowed to peacefully die in his own bed and never faced the wrath of the russian people in the way the losing Germans civilians did. . And i have no love for the WWII germans who looked the other way to the nazi's atrocrities. First of, they were various nationalities and not just Russians. Secondly scale matters. Rape will occur as a crime of opportunity and unlike murder is a monstrosity. So considering the Russians were raping like the Japanese and the Germans were raping like the Allies - big difference in numbers and penalty. Thirdly, 39-41 Soviets danced with the devil and thought they could get away with it. Also, the war was dragged on. Many units were ready to surrender but knew they faced certain death if they did. And as the war came closer to Berlin, it became about damage control rather than defense - that's why soldiers from the western front were redeployed to the east to slow the red army and enable quicker gains for the Allies while that was still an option. Imo the most abhorrent atrocities committed by the Germans beside Auschwitz, were the "POW" camps for the Soviets were three million starved to death and had to cannibalise to survive. Also the network of war brothels was a disgusting thing. My wife's family got rather "lucky" if it can be called that. The Germans shipped off a considerable amount of women from the village to work in munitions factories - most came back to the village and unviolated. Out of 3000 pre-war Jews only about 100 returned and most went to Israel after. Russia lost in the war 27 million dead. And yes the Germans did way more bad things to Russians than the other way around. Germany captured in the first 6 months of the war 6 million Russian soldiers...... Most of them died in captivity...... The first trial in auswitch for the gas chambers.... Was on Russian prisoners of war. So yes Russia was very angry..... And these days it looks like history might repeat itself again.

There is a movie about the very subject called "Woman in Berlin" and it shows the dynamics between the women and the Russian soldiers. It is a very good movie if you can find it. I saw it on Netflix but I don't think it is currently available. Do try to find it. One of the impressions from the film is that this same thing was done to the women in the USSR and it was payback. The German soldiers were cruel and inhumane when they were in Russia, and while there is never an excuse for this behavior we know that war brings out the beast in human beings. Just look at what was done to the prisoners of the concentration camps and at Babiyar!

Absolutely wrong. The ra/pes and pillage hardened German resolve and also was simply chaotic. The worst offenders were the NKVD controlled "penal brigades". They were so out of control in east Prussia that commander of all Soviet forces, Marshal Zhukhov, had a showdown with Stalin. Zhukhov told Stalin the penal brigades (controlled by the Party, not the Red Army) threatened the army advance and he wanted them withdrawn from the front. Stalin was afraid of Zhukhov's popularity with the Red army and saw him as a threat. Stalin relented. Eventually the NKVD exerted control over the brigades by force. I returned in the summer of 2023, a united city, much of the facination having been lost to history. I visited the Parliament building, they have preserved some of the daubings made by the Soviet military, written in different languages and using different scripts ... some (less family friendly comments) were covered up, the guide struggled with discussing this aspect, it must have been very harrowing for her ancestors. But, no more harrowing than the experiences of the people in the countries that had been invaded, especially in the East of Europe, or the victims who were deported to the camps and murderded there.

Why is the Einsatzgruppen excuse always applied to justify crimes of the soviet army? The Germans where not excused for shooting hostages after partisan ambushes. Or for not taking prisoners after discovering raped and slaughtered civilians killed by the enemy. Germans where often convicted for just being in the wrong place the wrong time while almost no soviet or allied war criminal was ever brought to justice. Some 15 millions of Germans where expelled from their homes and regions, of which some 2 millions where killed either directly or after rape, torture and starving. And that was only the tale of eastern Europe whereas the western allies did their share too. So why hasn´t the world become a better place after this genocide against the Germans?

No, it wasn't about revenge, the Red Army soldiers had been properly prepared and the army regularly dropped leaflets on the men with articles from chief Soviet Propagandist Ilya Ehrenberg on them. If you google "Kill, the German by Ilya Ehrenberg" you will get half the explanation for such brutality but by the end of the war, the phenomenon had spread all over the world, that's why more than 10 million Germans, mostly civilians were killed AFTER the end of the war while 5 million had died during the war. What our grandfathers did to the Germans was at least 10 times worse than everything they may have done to others, unfortunately hardly anyone knows about this, forbidden knowledge... I wonder why? One example, by mid 1946 the survival rate for German babies in the big cities was of about 10%, the mothers were so weak and thin, they had nothing for the babies. That was an intentional official allied policy called JCS 1067 that lasted 2 to 4 years after the 1945 surrender. Anyway, the best place to see the propaganda in action is right here, profoundly hating people who never did anything to you or your country 80 years after the end of a war is very likely a first in human history, clearly, someone is still working very hard on this.

This has been greatly exaggerated by British historians with their traditional Russophobia. The end of a war tends to be the most brutal and desperate phase, especially when there is no negotiated end. But the Red Army was very disciplined and did not leave cities flattened by air force as the Western Allies didThe most atrocities against the Wehrmacht were done by US forces against german divisions that had surrendered more or less complete and were being held for use in the so called Operation Unthinkable: an immediate assault on the USSR by the Western "Allies". It is described in the book 'Other Losses' how an unknown number of Wehrmacht soldiers perished after being held in outdoor enclosures without shelter, food or even water. Possibly hundreds of thousands. Also it would be well to remember that Russian war losses were around 27 million.

Bad war crimes, but german Wermaht (not even worse SS) had habit to kill civilans as they wanted, by every sadistic way they coud think of. In my county they shot 100 civilians for every german soldier killed, they fought it whoud scare civilians to stop resisting. In one case they took kids from high schools and shot them by mashineguns. Several hungreds of them. Dont compare germans and russians, most of those that comited rapes where from either penal platoons or from far east provinces of Soviet union. They where wrong.

@@dindu551 German photos, German movie footage, and German records tell the horrible tale. A bloody path cut across Eastern Europe and from there Operation Barbarossa into Russia itself. There is no “I don’t agree with you” on this. It is settled and overwhelmingly documented history. I can’t tell if you are some Chinese or Iranian provocateur, or a genuine Adolf lover seeking to undo the reputational damage done by the Nazis to beautiful Germany. Germany was the pinnacle of European culture and science. Until the Adolf lovers took over. And now Germany will never recover. It is doomed. All thanks to the bizarre Adolf lovers.

Everything that happened to the Germans happened to the Soviets in spades. Remembrr that. I can't conjour up sny sympathy for the Germans even though it may make me a better man. I remember reading of a conversation a Soviet had with a German in Prussia. "Why did you come to my country. What did we have that you didn't have. You had paved streets, street lighting running water in your homes, sewage systems comfortable housing, so why did you come. We had none of these things.

Very interesting. Women in the time of war. Yes, this seems horrible. But what about the men that were killed? Many were conscripted. How many women fled Ukraine after the start of the war? No men were permitted to leave. There ought to be laws restricting women from leaving a country at war, but there isn’t. National wars are just that; a nation at war. Not just the men suffering it out.

According to these data, the Red Army behaved exactly as animalistically as Goebbels had previously predicted. If the Germans did something, it is still referred to as barbarism, but what the Reds did was not a crime. History is always written by the winners, right?
