Comes A Time is the magic gem hidden in Neil's catalog! That side 1 might be his best side one EVER by him. Sample And Hold off of Trans was my first Neil Young song. I caught his live in Berlin concert when he had Lofgrin with him. BLEW MY MIND as a kid and to this day that album hold huge meaning to me. I love it. LeNoise and Pysch Pill are both freaking amazing as well!

Interesting discussion. "Through My Sails" (on ZUMA) was intended for the next CSNY album (tentatively titled "Human Highway"). When the sessions fell apart, Neil put "Through My Sails" on his next album. As for the HOMEGROWN songs, a couple ("Deep Forbidding Lake" & "Love is a Rose") ended up on the DECADE compilation. "Little Wing" became the lead-off track on HAWKS & DOVES (where another out-take, "Old Homestead" ended up) while AMERICAN STARS 'N' BARS got "Star of Bethlehem" and "Homegrown". Keeping track of Neil's output keeps super fans busy. Too bad he never released a second (or third or fourth or...) DECADE compilation.

Hi guys, Wow... I actually know something you guys don't. Chrome Dreams was an album that he put off for decades. The album is brilliant.... when he finally decided to release it. There is an 18 plus minute long song on there called Ordinary People. Another one was 14 minutes long that is reminiscent of Cinnamon Girl.. One with children's choir called The Way. I have a review and even a hype sticker review from Mojo magazine giving this album 5 stars. Love Le Noise. The mix of Daniel and Neil was genius and it shows in the production. Another one I love. He is in his own special way a chameleon in rock.... not in the scope of Bowie of course. Thank you for honoring.... Mr. Young and his incredible catalog. It makes me realize that I have a lot of gaps in my collection that will need to fill. Who knows... one day. Definitely a favorite artist. A catalog that many can only dream of. He may stumble from time to time but brilliance is all over his catalog. Maybe preachy, maybe a perfectionist but he is all great. Great eh.. Canadian... haha. God bless and keep well.... Tino

Fantastic vid, absolutely fantastic. Casual, informative and concise (really - when you consider the huge amount of stuff ye showed, dozens and dozens of releases). Subbed. Did I see Prairie wind shown? Can't remember now. Weld is an abolutely superb record(s) for the most part. Check out the versions of Cortez, and Like a hurricane. I never liked the Rust never sleeps record but I loved the Live rust (Cortez, Powderfinger are both incendiary). I love his long tracks - on Chrome Dreams "Ordinary people" is one his top top tracks. On Ragged glory, one of his top 3 releases imho check out Over and Over. I saw the PP tour in Dublin and he (mis)treated us to a terrible back-to-the-audience performance, with an interminable intro/outro of the footstep motif to the Walk like a giant track. For the encore there was Powderfinger and Cortez I think (so that made me happier, LOL) Cheers guys. Dylan next?

One thing about the 1st album: we're really talking about 1968 ... recorded Aug-Oct 68, released November 68 ... but then it was remixed and re-released Jan 22 1969 ... so yes, technically 1969 but for all intents and purposes a 1968 album. Then with the second one, Everybody Knows this is Nowhere, we get recording Jan-March 1969 and released May 14, 1969. But yes, 2 great albums in a relatively short time frame.

One of my big regrets was missing the Young, Sonic Youth, & Social Distortion tour. At the time, punk had exploded & it was a major label feeding frenzy of all things "alternative". I was just too punk at the time for Lollapalooza & newly signed bands by the majors. I ended up missing a lot of great shows because they did not meet the $5.00 basement/warehouse show ascetic.

Great video, you two. I stuck it out for the duration. I believe Neil’s impetus for recording Trans was to create something that his son, who was autistic, could appreciate. The electronic sounds were more palatable and soothing to his son at the time. I think that was his sole reason making the record. It’s not a record I revisit much, but he knew it wouldn’t be commercial. I also read that he was generally pissed off at David Geffen and during his entire run at Geffen Records, he sought to make the least commercially desirable albums possible, so he would get released from his contract as soon as possible.
@billenplum4 жыл бұрын
Ben Young isn't autistic at all. He was born with severe cerebral palsy. The electronic sounds were not more palatable to him, he wasn't deaf nor autist, he hears perfectly well. But he can't move nor talk. It was the begining of pc and digital mediums, Neil thought this new technology could be usefull for helping disabled people to comunicate and act on things. He created the Bridge School with his wife Pegi Young, using the technology with disabled kids. Neil created a device he called the Big Red Button for his son can act on his model train railroad. Nowadays, disabled people use digital devices to act and talk through that. Neil's vision became real, and he was one of the very first ones to make it real. Now Ben Young can talk and act, with a pc . On the other hand, it was also the begining of digital recording, and Neil had to try this new sound and devices. The 70s were over and he wanted to enter the 80s with an actual music. Neil loves new things. He tried about 10 years long before deciding the analog recording was better. Trans isn't just about Ben, though the song Transformer Man is. The album is mostly about changes. Changes of times, with the computers and digital technology coming, changing of decade, changing of sound, and changing of life as he was now married with a son, trying not to mess it all up again. It's all about transformation.

I think you missed (the rare) Journey Through The Past soundtrack. Time Fades Away is the album that has grown most over the years. Reactor is a solid Hardrock record with some good songs (Surfer Joe, Opera Star, Get back on it, T-bone): "It's too late for General Custer, too late for Robert E. Lee, so I get back on the highway, before it's too late for me." Landing On Water is a quite unique style of Hardrock (with children choir etc.) I like, but this is obviously not everbodys cup of tea. Same story with his version of soul music "This note's for you", that declared war on rockstars, who promoted softdrinks in their videos. MTV banned him for a while for this. The Eldorado EP you didn't mention is very highly appreciated by some critics. Americana is nice, too.
@Philk814 жыл бұрын
Great job guys! I actually saw Neil w Crazy Horse while on the Landing on Water tour in '86. I too don't remember too many songs from that LP but he wove in some Trans stuff and great guitar rockers like Down by The River, Cinnamon Girl, Cowgirl in the Sand - fantastic, memorable show (Bflo NY) - in my top 10 all time concerts...
@ttomgast17692 жыл бұрын
Time Fades Away is my favorite Neil .What a punk move after the mega success of Harvest . Mr . Young could of doubled up on his popularity but instead shunned , attacked the possibility . Ultimately it set up Neil to be indifferent to commercial success but broaden his palette however he chose to pursue it. Rough and ragged like the best punk . Live with all new songs , who but Neil does that .

Reactor is not my favourite album, but T-Bone is an all time classic. Three chords, two lines: Got mash potatoes (x4)/ Ain't got no T-Bone. 10 minutes 30. Only Neil could pull that off! There's also a bootleg acoustic version of 'Shots' which is worth listening to -- much more in that song that than the rock version of it.

Watching this. You guys completely missed the mark on a few amazing albums. First off, you say Rust isn’t for a Sunday Morning. Half the album is acoustic(some of his best, which you don’t even mention). Also, you mentioned Motorcycle Mama on Comes a time, but say nothing about how it’s an amazing blues workout duet with Nicolette Larson. A high point for me. And regarding Hawks and doves, one side is some of his best acoustic tunes again that get completely overlooked, and the other side is like a weird out-country concept album with full country band and Rufus T on fiddle. I feel like you guys have never even listened that that amazing, weird, and singular every into Neil’s catalog. And I can’t even start on Trans and how it’s got some of his most inventive music and rocking riffs ever(my young friends recently were shocked and amazed by it). All I suggest is if you really live Neil, please open your mind and ears. I’m not there yet, but I’m guessing you’re gonna love Ragged Glory, which I found right off to be a cheesy piece of muddy crap. We’ll see. I guess my expectations of Neil are pretty high, with my high points being the albums most people hate cause Neil is following his extremely weird and innovative muse. The truly great stuff is not for everyone I guess. I just wish Neil fans were as open and experimental as he was(there was a reason Sonic Youth covered Sample and Hold, which they did brilliantly). No offense. Just my take on this late 70s early 80s period. I also saw ybe solo Trans tour and it was the greatest show I’ve ever seen to this day. I’ve never seen someone having so much fun on stage doing what they love.
