I can't believe it's taken me this long to watch this in full, and comment. Nice one Ramble. Love to sitting around swapping Thoreau quotes- that is existential! Tip of the cap for the kudos.

Thoreau after being arrested for refusing to pay tax: “It is true, I might have resisted forcibly with more or less effect, might have run amok against society; but I preferred that society should run amok against me, it being the desperate party.” I’m not sure what’s weirder - seeing someone made a video admiring your work, or someone you admire seeing a video you made about them! Appreciate the comment mate, means a lot. Looking forward to your new films!

@@verward thats what he taught! Outdoor education is a subject taught in Australian schools so as part of our teaching degree, Beau and his amazing collegues would teach us how to teach students in, through, and about the outdoors. Some people learn to teach English, we learnt to teach OE. We would go kayaking, hiking, canoeing, snorkling etc which certainly makes for a fulfilling university experience.

I couldn't agree more with the last statement, that the films are criminally underrated. I've literally gotten inspired from his films to do my own version of the journeys. Just DO! Don't wait. Start!
@SmartStr33t3 жыл бұрын
Yes to all your points. Also for an adventurer, he's very grounded in "home". Whether it's his barn, the gum trees on his land, the mile block that surrounds his home, it feels like he is deeply rooted in his space and his family. I was trying to imagine other adventurers: Alatair Humphreys, Ed Pratt (who unicycled the world), or any KZbin adventurer, showing us anything about their homes or families. It's nearly always framed as something to adventure OUT of, a place to escape from. With Beau it feels like adventuring is just his natural child-like curiosity and his home and family is a part of the same impulse. Adventuring for Beau is not about escaping but about exploring.

You've found the words that I've been trying to use to describe Beau Miles to other people that I know. With this, I'm actually gonna start being able to describe him to other people and just exactly why they should go and watch him. Thanks for the great video man!
@tofubob101023 жыл бұрын
What I've come to see through Beau's videos is that he NEEDS to have these adventures and experiences. In his documentary about running the 650 KM through the Australian Alps he begins to lose his ability to hold composure when his friend was a few hours late to a rallying point, and then completely loses it when his mother and father step in to help him on his journey. He hates being a failure, and especially when it isn't his fault. I am glad we get to watch him grow and maybe rediscover himself at this stage in life as we can all learn something about ourselves along the way.

If you take a look at some of kierkegaard philosophies concerning nihilism actually embodies beau's spirit quite well. As far as I understand him, he doesn't assume that there is inherent meaning to anything he does. He goes out in search of meaning, and if he doesn't find it he creates meaning for himself. In the human bean, he in part concludes that the meaning of life might be through our food. He actively and joyfully takes on the challenge of answering his own existential questions instead of just sitting down and waiting for an answer. It is truly inspiring stuff.
@ramblehouse51414 жыл бұрын
I completely agree! I'm not all that familiar with Kierkegaard, but the application of one's own meaning to an inherently meaningless existence is one of the backbones of nihilism and existentialism. The bones were laid down mostly by Nietzsche, then expanded on by the likes of Camus and Sartre in the 20th century as I understand it.

I believe he enjoys the shot situations because he gets to learn things about himself. You only grow and learn in situations that are foreign or uncomfortable. If you are someone with a growth mindset. (Especially one as strong as Beau’s) you’ll naturally enjoy seeing how you change and what you learn about yourself in situations that you aren’t used to. I believe that is where he gets his enjoyment from. I’ve been working towards the same thing. He actually questions why he enjoys making himself uncomfortable in the human bean.

Something worth mentioning that I mentioned in the comment I made on that video was about Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Have you read it? Have you heard anyone, I'm thinking particularly Elon Musk, talk about it? If not I'd highly, highly recommend it. Sounds like you, Beau, and anyone else suffering from "The Absurd" could do with reading it. I'm not going to even give you a summary of it, I feel like that would be robbing you of the journey. How to make use of time (the 24 hr marathon), how to find adventure in your close environment (bunch of those), how to challenge an obscene build proposal quote (the re-do of his office at the school he works for), how to care for things lost or no longer existent (the line, the river), how to commute to work with a new set of eyes, how to love and surprise your wife for almost no money (the $60 shed), how to begin to understand the precious worldview of an infant and pass on your values (mile with May), how to think about the presence of an inanimate object in space (the rock he brought back to his buddy), the list goes on… but it’s all there.
