I wonder about this story and 4 yr old children. The "death angel" could be quite frightening.

Yes, it can be frightening. My experience sharing Godly Play stories with children from 2-16 is that they take in what they can process, depending on their ages and developmental stage. When I share this story with children a little older (8-10) there are lots of wonderings about what the Angel of Death might be, why bad things sometimes happen, etc. Great opportunities to contemplate how we can rely on God when we are afraid, prayer, etc. These are some of those really big questions that we, as humans, face in our lives. The stories can help us to make meaning when we faces such challenges.

It seems to me that you spend too much time talking about desert. One of the most repeated sentence in Exodus is Moses did as God told him to do. This story completely ignores it. And Moses did not divide water. God did. God did all. I think that it is important that let children know that all is a part of God’s rescue plan.
