Saw this n 1973. The theater was packed, and when the movie ended, they had to open all of the emergency doors as people spilled out into the parking lot emotionally drained, crying, and wailing. Was quite a spectacle that I never experienced at a movie theater before or since.

When this first came out, an airman friend of my husband from Travis AFB really wanted to see it, so we agreed to drive (nearly 50 miles) to San Francisco to the Northpoint Theater to watch it. I had already read the book, so I was semi-prepared, I thought. The place was packed and we barely managed to get seats on the long benches at the rear, just inside the lobby doors. We shared the bench with two crazily nervous guys who, as the movie went on, smoked more and more furiously ( it was allowed back then) with their hands just shaking. After over two sweaty hours of screams, and cries, and even maniacal laughter, we filed silently out to our car for the long, mostly silent ride back to Fairfield. By the time we got to the house, the guy who went with us had to 'go' so badly that he just ran into the bathroom that was just next door to our bedroom. I went into the bedroom an turned on the light and our Siamese cat, who was sitting in the middle of the bed up by our pillows, yowled out her usual throaty greeting and I almost jumped out of my skin when the guy in the bathroom screamed like a teenage girl! My husband laughed till tears came from his eyes. The poor fellow was such a mess that we let him spend the night in the spare bedroom, rather than force him to drive alone back to the barracks. 👍for Mercedes McCambridge's voice scaring the s**t out of just about everybody who ever saw this film. ✌

I saw this in 1985/6, I'm not sure the year. With my two best friends, we had 9 or 10 years old. And one of the first betamax videos in my street. Far away from Georgetown, even far far way from EEUU. So we didn't have a clue about the movie, only the micro sinopsis from the tape. And obviusly, the name. "The Exorcist". Wow! Just for the record, we were three litle kids from a Catholic school, in the land of Teodosio the great. Let's say, a truly Catholic country since the old days. So there we were, this three kids watching this movie. Our type of terror movies were "Gremlins", or "Poltergeist". The saturdays we had free card to run to the videoclub and put some tapes on our bags. Good old 80's, no worried fathers about Internet and porn. So let's go with "the Exorcist"! 30 minutes later, one of my friends was throwing up his last two years of breakfast. The other one, looked worse than Regan. White and yellow all over his face. At this point, I wasn't scared anymore, because that was my house, and that puke on the couch meaned problems. But believe me, that was a huge experience for us. No more terror movies untill the 90's, no more demon things untill...I don't know. Still today, I dont feel confortable with that kind of movies and stuff. I see this reactions just for fun, seeing this people I remember my buddies. But that's for sure, you don't forget the first time with this movie. No way.

One of the worst reoccurring nightmares that I have involving The Exorcist is somebody tying me up in a chair and leaving me alone to watch the movie. Lol 😆 That one scares the shit outta me. Fun Fact: The mother of Father Karras was a Greek lady by the name of Vasiliki Malliaros who was 89 years of age by the time of filming and has never played in any other film. She did not manage to watch herself on the big screen as she died before the premiere. Also, in the scene where Karras is taking care of the leg of his mother on the sofa, a greek song is being played in the background. That song is one of the most iconic greek songs of all time, its a love song and it roughly translates to "My story, my sin, my biggest mistake. You are a sickness inside of me and how can i get you out". The lyrics are very fitting to the "disease" inside of the girl and in my opinion the choice of the song is not random.

Almost nothing in movies is 'random.' Sometimes ad libs make the cut, but they are based on the actors interpretation of the role so not 'random.' Probably the most famous ad lib in movies is Dustin Hoffman's "I'm walkin' here." line from Midnight Cowboy. Real NYC cab nearly running Hoffman over as he was crossing the street with the cameras rolling. The cab was random and not in the script but Hoffman's line was completely in character.

Fun facts-Linda Blair (Regan) suffered from back problems her whole life from that scene in the bed where she was whipping up and down. Indeed, the real story actually happened in my hometown of St. Louis. It’s a big part of our history here. The house still exists and is a tourist attraction, but the Alexian Brothers Hospital where the exorcism took place was demolished years ago. After the exorcism, they sealed off that room and eventually tore down the entire wing before the hospital closed permanently later on. For a long time it was just a parking lot, and there’s been a crack in the pavement that keeps reappearing despite them repaving the ground multiple times over the decades. They rebuilt a new hospital, St. Alexius, over it that ALSO closed a few years ago due to mismanagement and a criminal investigation. It’s since been reopened yet again within the last year, but under new owners, and is called South City Hospital. Most of us from STL believe there’s still something bad lingering on that property. I certainly wouldn’t want to be a patient there lmao.

Her performance is the highlight for me. Just gut wrenching emotions coming out of her. A broken mother just desperate for help. Powerless to address it on her own and just at wits end. Trying her best to hold it together...intently listening and leaning on the expertise of learned men while still knowing that nothing they say applies. Yea I honestly think what’s so “scary” about the movie is just the dramatic things that happen. And the fact that all of this stuff was never before seen. I can name 10 including The ring, The conjuring, Insidious, sinister, Woman in black, Babadook, Haunting in Connecticut; & others I’ve seen that are just plain disturbing unnerving and worse. Even “Smile” to me. If u were to bring this movie out now for the first time it wouldn’t have the same effect of horror. But because it was the “first of its kind” it has a different level of precedence and shocking effect. It is disgusting and raw and doesn’t hold back. So that can add to it. But yea

When I was little there was a story going around in the neighborhood about a girl that got crazy after playing with a ouija board. They said that playing with one was inviting demons into your house. As a semi-religious person, I think you can play with them but mustn't let yourself be carried away. As for the movie plot, I believe the demon possessed Reagan because she was a sweet and kind child, opened her mind and let herself vulnerable by playing with the ouija board and she wasn't baptized. In Catholic communities there's the belief that a baby must be baptized to be protected by God (not that that is the true meaning of baptism in Catholicism). Your reaction and thoughts always make my day, guys. Keep it coming! ✨

The Exorcist was released in 24 theaters in North America in late December 1973. Reviews were mixed, but audiences waited in long lines during winter weather; the sold out shows were even more profitable for Warners since they had booked it into those theaters under four wall distribution rental agreements, the first time a major studio had done that. Some viewers suffered adverse physical reactions, fainting or vomiting to shocking scenes such as a realistic cerebral angiography. Many children were allowed to see it, leading to charges that the MPAA ratings board had accommodated Warner Bros by giving the film an R-rating instead of the X-rating to ensure the troubled production its commercial success. Several cities attempted to ban it outright or prevent children from attending. Aspects of Blatty's novel were inspired by the 1949 exorcism performed on a boy known as "Roland Doe" or "Robbie Mannheim" by Jesuit priest William S. Bowdern. Some scenes, particularly those with sexual content, were toned down for the movie since an actress of approximately Regan's age was expected to be cast. The scene where Regan masturbates with a crucifix was, in the book, more prolonged and explicit, with Regan seriously injuring herself yet attaining orgasm.The film also excludes the detail from the book of the possessed Regan experiencing constant diarrhea, giving her room a strong foul odor. The scenes where the possessed Regan's head rotates 180 degrees so that she appears to be looking directly backwards drew significant notice from audiences and critics upon the film's release. "All I can tell you is that the way you think I did it is not the way we did it," Friedkin told Castle of Frankenstein at the time. Like the film's other special effects, it was performed live in front of the camera. A life-size animated dummy of the character was built, so realistic that Blair felt uncomfortable in its presence. In the Bible those who were possessed would often hurt the host by jumping into fire, cutting themselves, or drowning. When Jesus drove them demons from the man they went into a herd of swine then off a cliff to their death. They feared Jesus knowing who He truly is the Son of God. He died for the sins of the world that all who believe in Him shall have eternal life. Matthew 8:16 When evening came, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed; and He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were ill.

Your reaction is so entertaining I've watched it a few times already. One thing just occurred to me. These scary movies of the 70s early 80s are so because of the practical effects, meaning not computerized, but real, built, active and physical. NOT DIGITAL. We basically had no computers that could do that then. 1973? You had to be there, we had NOTHING lol. No smart phones, I didn't have an answering machine until the late 70s, late 80s maybe some of us had really shitty early DOS computers at work, but hardly anyone had anything. You'd be lucky to have a pocket calculator. I really think that's why these movies are the GOATS-they're as believable as real life for the most part. Most horror movies are crap. These are beautifully filmed (Shining, Jaws, Aliens, The Thing), have a story other then teens getting slashed by the neighborhood incel), top quality sound and music, fine acting. Glad you're covering the best of them. When I was young we watched 50 year old scary movies too:Nosferatu, M, Cat People (original), Most Dangerous Game, etc. There was junk to be sure. Oh I'm going to love this one! 🤣 In all seriousness, this is a true classic. It has so much more going for it than just being "scary". Performances, practical effects and sound design are top notch. There are really no jump scares, which is a good thing, but it might scar you psychologically for some time.

My older sister slipped me into the drive in to watch this movie and it scared the hell out of me, it changed my life forever. When I broke down and told my mother because I wanted her to comfort me and tell me not to be scared, that it was only a movie. She told me it was a true story and if I was bad and misbehaved, that could happen to me. I’m still scared of this movie.

This is not a true story in the sense that all these things happened to a little girl. It's loosely based on a boy who was possesed (turns out he was just mentally and emotionally disturbed) but mainly it's a compilation of horrific things that can occur to someone possessed. They just piled all of them on one little girl. Regan says it isn't just a demon possessing her but the Devil himself. The demon was lying, of course, as demons will. We know it to be Pazuzu, "king of the demons of the wind." This demon is such bad news that he actually scares away other demons. 👿

Great reaction. Imagine how terrifying this was back in 1973! Like Psycho in 1960 and The Haunting in 1963 were. Exorcist 2 isn't scary at all but Exorcist 3 starring George C Scott is very creepy and worth a watch.

One of the things I love is the contrast between the reactions of Father Merrin (the older archaeologist priest) and Father Karras to the possessed girl. It's not really explained in the film but in the book I seem to remember that Merrin had been involved in an exorcism involving this same demon, so they knew each other. When Merrin arrives on the scene Karras is trying to explain the psychiatric angle and the multiple personalities and Merrin basically waves him off and is all "naw dog, there's only one demon, I know him. I got this. Let's go exorcise his ass."
@Mmmkay102 жыл бұрын
You're right. I think they go into it a bit in the horrible Exorcist II move about Father Merrin's first run-in with the demon. I never read the book but I remember them briefly covering it in the second film.

I remember myself and a friend rode out up the street late one night to watch this at another friend’s house. When it was over, he and I were going to ride back to my house, but at the end of the block sat a black cat in the road under the light and all we could see was his eyes glowing. My friend Chris rode out 5 extra blocks to go around and avoid that intersection. 😂

My mother read the novel back in the 70s, she couldn't sleep for 3 days after finishing it. It's just that powerful of a story. The movie is a faithful representation of the book.
@donniehagy51252 жыл бұрын
Well...not really. If I remember the book correctly, the demon was unrelenting in its attack on Father Karras. It attacked his character and accused him of being a homosexual, which I think he was. That (to me) caused his loss of faith more than anything. It also used what happened to Karras's mother as more fuel for the fire. Also, it was unrelenting on its attack on the man-servant, Karl.

In one of the movies, where they had added different things to like the devils face wasn't in the original, there was also a part where after Chris(mother) comes home and finds nobody there and the girl had just walked thru the door with her meds, and while she was being pissed at her the phone rings and it was the guy telling her how Burke fell down the stairs, Regan comes down the stairs but with her back arched, walking on just her hands and feet, but she was coming down head first, that was the creepiest part for me, yes nothing comes close to being anywhere near the scare factor as this movie did.. This was fun to watch, thanks guys. Oh and wasn't that demons face the scariest you couldn't blink or you would def. miss it.

Man, even the TV trailers for this movie scared the ish out of me as a kid. It came out a few months before my 10th birthday and I would get freaked out when they came on, same for the newspaper ads. Back then they would do full page ads for big movies. I tried to watch it on TV in 79 when I was 15, and even though the most shocking parts were edited for TV, I still had to sleep with the lights on that night. And living close to Georgetown I can tell you , most of the filming locations still look the same nearly 50 years later, those creepy stairs are an official DC landmark and are called “The Exorcist Steps” . The house is still there , although it’s much smaller than in the movie, they added a section to make it appear larger and Reagan’s bedroom window was closer to the steps .

My brother's and I went to watch this when it first came out in 1973. I was 17 at the time. You have to realize that at that time, there was no cussing in movies, so for us to hear that language was total shock, then the special effects were so real, and no CGI. It was the most horrifying thing we had ever seen. The next day was Sunday and we all went to Church with no complaining. This will always be my favorite horror film ever.
