The Exorcist: Believer
Only in Theaters October 6
Exactly 50 years ago this fall, the most terrifying horror film in history landed on screens, shocking audiences around the world. Now, on Friday, October 13, a new chapter begins. From Blumhouse and director David Gordon Green, who shattered the status quo with their resurrection of the Halloween franchise, comes The Exorcist: Believer.
Since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago, Victor Fielding (Tony winner and Oscar® nominee Leslie Odom, Jr.; One Night in Miami, Hamilton) has raised their daughter, Angela (Lidya Jewett, Good Girls) on his own.
But when Angela and her friend Katherine (newcomer Olivia O’Neill), disappear in the woods, only to return three days later with no memory of what happened to them, it unleashes a chain of events that will force Victor to confront the nadir of evil and, in his terror and desperation, seek out the only person alive who has witnessed anything like it before: Chris MacNeil.
For the first time since the 1973 film, Oscar® winner Ellen Burstyn reprises her iconic role as Chris MacNeil, an actress who has been forever altered by what happened to her daughter Regan five decades before.
The film also stars Emmy winner Ann Dowd (The Handmaid’s Tale, Hereditary) as Victor and Angela’s neighbor, and Grammy winner Jennifer Nettles (Harriet, The Righteous Gemstones) and two-time Tony winner Norbert Leo Butz (Fosse/Verdon, Bloodline) as the parents of Katherine, Angela’s friend.
When The Exorcist, based on the best-selling book by William Peter Blatty, was released, it changed the culture forever, obliterating box office records and earning 10 Academy Award® nominations, becoming the first horror film ever nominated for Best Picture.
The Exorcist: Believer is directed by David Gordon Green from a screenplay by Peter Sattler (Camp X-Ray) and David Gordon Green, from a story by Scott Teems (Halloween Kills), Danny McBride (Halloween trilogy) and David Gordon Green, based on characters created by William Peter Blatty.
The film is produced by Jason Blum for Blumhouse and by David Robinson and James G. Robinson for Morgan Creek Entertainment.
The executive producers are Danny McBride, David Gordon Green, Stephanie Allain, Ryan Turek and Atilla Yücer. Universal Pictures presents a Blumhouse/Morgan Creek Entertainment production in association with Rough House Pictures.

"children" is a stretch. These girls are almost adults. I can understand you thinking the white girl was "a child," but the black girl looks her age... 17. They could have made her look a lot younger than she looked in the movie. But then again, this movie should have been straight to DVD, so I'm not surprised the makeup artists weren't that good at making a young woman look like a young girl.

I watched 'The Exorcist ' for the first time time in 1974 at the Odeon cinema in London's Leicester Square, and afterwards I was terrified at the thought of having to travel across London late at night to reach my hotel. I have never seen a more scary movie than this. I was only 19 at the time. Even now, in 2023, it's not shown on British tv without serious censorship, 50 years later. This new sequel opens at my local cinema today - I'm not so readily shocked these days ! It will be interesting though to see how it fares in comparison to the original.
@goldenoldie68
@goldenoldie68 8 ай бұрын
Ok. I'm writing this review the morning after going to watch 'Exorcist Believer'. Like I said in my first comment, you need to have seen the original film when it was first released, and witnessed its impact on the audience, in order to make a fair comparison. Of course in 1974 there was no social media, no internet at all, and I doubt it was even promoted in TV advertising. I remember a dark poster, showing the priest in a dimly lit street, gazing up a long flight of steps. The haunting music of Tubular Bells was new to most as well. The effects and images used in the movie were at the time original and some deemed offensive enough to have the film banned for many years by media outlets of the day. Times have changed. Like the original, 'Exorcist Believer' is a bit of a slow burner. It has its moments, as discussed by others, and a nice twist at the end, but over the years we have become immune to the 'shock' elements in movies of this nature. But I don't imagine that it can have the same impact that Linda Blair and co did in the Seventies, or still be talked about many years from now.

I am cautiously excited for this movie. While I don't expect it to outmatch the original, it definitely has potential! Maybe above Heretic and even on the same level of Exorcist 3? I am very much for bringing back Chris MacNeil and the references to Reagan in that first scene do quip the curiosity. And the homages to the original with the "subliminal" images is a neat little touch to this and the first trailer. Can't wait to see it! Hope it gives Friedkin something to be proud of! RIP ❤

David Gordon Green has a lot of work to do after the very divisive Halloween Trilogy he made. The Exorcist is a property, much like Halloween, that people do NOT like people messing around with. That being said this does 'look' promising and I am willing to absolutely give it a shot in hopes he has crafted a solid opener to the trilogy he has in mind. @mikedavis8008 Absolutely. “Kills” and “Ends” were crap films. But if David Gordon Green deserves criticism for those films then he also deserves credit for “Halloween 2018” cause that was his idea from start to finish. I was 5 yrs old, when my older cousins took me to see the original, at the Cleveland Park theaters (now called Cineplex-something or other) in Wash/DC, my hometown. Cleveland Park, is a very old, upper-NorthWest neighborhood in DC..and its walking distance to Georgetown Univ. Lets just say it has an "affect" to it, that lends itself to the creepiness of the house that the Exorcist was filmed in, on the campus of the school. After seeing "The Exorcist", I couldnt sleep in my room for almost 2 weeks. I slept with my folks. But I also became a horror movie fan because I saw The Exorcist. This "flanker" is a VERY far-cry from the original that literally changed how horror flicks were made. Friedkin, is a "horror god" because of the original.

Too young to watch the original when it came out but did read the book, The Exorist, at the curious age of 11. And was utterly riveted by the read. I eventually watched the film some years later and found its low-key presentation to be an utterly spooky outing. The BBC this week, celebrating its 50th anniversary, aired The Exorcist. The film remains timeless and as creepy as it was back then. (A family member texted: "watched it at 1am and still gives me goosebumps"). For me, no horror film since comes close. This latest attempt of a reboot I suspect will remain without impact. Subtlety in the spooky storytelling in modern day dramas is lost, as a defeaning soundtrack, a chorus of "who-can-scream-the-loudest" and a predictable flashing lightbulb etc. as if begging the audience to jump out of their seat, takes its place. All resulting in a constant reminder that this is just a work of...fiction, And tonight's sleep will be sound. Simplicity is sadly lost on modern-day horror writers and so, for me, I know this film will come, go and remain unremembered. And to all real-life exorcists out there: it will be just another OTT horror flick.

i hate being desensitized to horror films because every horror film i watch doesn't scare me in the slightest. The original will always be the greatest but i'm giving this one a chance only because i love the original so much. I'm not expecting it to be scary or to even be scared but i'm just hoping that it has some really good scenes to get enjoyment out of it. I hope we get to see different characters in the next two sequels since this movie is a new trilogy i wanna see one part where a boy is possessed that was actually inspired from what the real story was and make the last part with a character that actually looks closely to Regan or flip the script and possess an adult like a child's parent or something.

Idk why ppl think they can only enjoy horror movies if they scare and shock you, becuz yeah no shit in the modern world we are all desensitised. I love old horror movies, even if i know it won’t scare me the same way it did audiences back then, the Exorcist can never have that same impact, however hard we would want it to. Recently watched Talk To Me which I felt did a good job of making a modern approach regarding exorcism (more so i like it becuz it doesn’t rely on jumpscares and shock to ‘scare’, instead making us invested in the narrative and characters, like the original Exorcist did, and using atmosphere and tension to drive the horror. So idk, if you go into every horror movie wanting to be completely uniquely scared and shocked that seems like you’re setting yourself up for disappointment, idk thats just my opinion i think its nice to enjoy horror movies even if they’re not at all scary

@@GuineaPigEveryday Even though I'm not scared of horror I still get enjoyment out of it but at the same time when I watch it it's like being numb to that scary feeling. It's like having no sense of fear in a enjoyable way if that makes sense. But I don't like be desensitized because I just wanna feel scared watching the movie because I know the overall of horror doesn't surround itself with just being scared it's just a personal thing for me that I wanna get scared. So whether people agree with me or not my point is that I just wanna watch a film that I can feel scared by and there's nothing that can change that. I know I do get some type of enjoyment out of the movies but again at the same time i just feel bored of that idea of not being scared. I don't agree that you have to be scared to enjoy it I just wanna feel scared and I know as much as I love horror it doesn't do it for me.

The issue isn't being desensitized to horror, but not finding material which scares you. And this is the thing; you have to know what actually scares you. There's a difference between gore, in which Blumhouse is specialized in, and spiritual horror like Wan's first films. It's a total BS idea to think we all are scared the same way or of the same things. I find Saw movies extremely gory dramas but Conjuring 1 for example scared me because of the sound effects, and some clever jump scares.

Ellen Burstyn is still such a beauty, can't believe she's 90 yrs old! She was 40 as the mom in the original, how time flies!

Since this is supposed to be a trilogy, even if she isn't in the official cast list, I really hope Linda Blair makes an appearance. Even if it's in the ending as a cliffhanger, I'd love part two to be about how Regan grew up and dealt with the otherworldly traumatic events. But not make her a vigilante getting revenge on Pazuzu. But I have a feeling they will reveal she's already dead early on. Hope not, because that would be a great film, or potentially would be. But watching the trailers and seeing the possessed girls write her name, one emulating her voice, and a shot of a picture of Regan hanging in some shrine, I'm assuming she's gone.

@@bunnygirl4 Sorry, it's in the first trailer. You see a photo of Regan (actually a picture of Blair from a made for tv movie called Sarah T.- Portrait of a Teenage Alcoholic) hanging in one of the hanging mobiles in the forest.

The only storyline involving Regan MacNeil that would be logical and tie in with the original fillm and novel,would be for her to sacrifice her life as Father Karras did to save her life.

@@Carlos94016 The 1990 movie is Exorcist 3, which is the REAL second movie, not that 1977 Heretic horsemess. Exorcist IV in the early 2000's is a prequel, so to me, this is the trilogy and hopefully ending.
