When The Exorcist hit theatres in 1973, it created a sensation beyond anyone's comprehension; a tide of reactions so extreme, they barely seem believable today. Frequently cited as the best horror movie of all time, and widely regarded as one of the most shocking and controversial events ever to meet the big screen; it’s hard to deny the cultural, social and historical influence The Exorcist has had.
In this four part series I explore the various factors that contributed to the film’s enormous legacy, ranging from its artistic prowess, social-political implications and the many controversies surrounding the film and its release.

Good work on the documentary. I can't get over the director. The things he did. For his movie. I liked it. I wished todays movies were more new. To many reboots and remakes.

In 1975, our religion teacher asked our class (12 and 13 year olds) how many had seen the movie. Almost half of us raised our hands and he almost fainted.

Excellent job on the 4 parts of this documentary! Is the music at 4:33 from The Exorcist? It reminds of music from the TV series The Incredible Hulk. The transformation of David Banner to the Hulk was frightening in it's own way, especially for me at the time. I would have been 3 when The Exorcist came out. I didn't see it until the 1990's. I think that my mom might have seen it on TV in the 1980s. I'm reading the book for the first time (40th Anniversary Edition).

Thankyou, that's very kind of you to say! That particular track is 'Bucket of Blood' from the Carrie soundtrack, by Pino Donaggio. I love hearing how different people discovered the film. It's reputation definitely preceeds it!

Many movies have their sets catch fire and burn down - the 007 stage burned down during Ridley Scott's "Legend", the hotel set for "The Shining" burned down. A movie set is a disaster waiting to happen with paint, chemicals, electrical wiring and hot lights, and poor ventilation.

I have a pet theory that the dog fight at the end of the Iraq sequence are the demon shaking its fist at Merin and reminding him that possession is violence and that Merin is one of the intended victims

I still can’t fathom that people believe in a magic man in the sky and a scary bogeyman in the ground. Some people just still cling onto childish fairytales I guess.

My interpretation of the movie is that it’s more about faith in Jesus because father Damien karras is really the main character more than a supportive role . This movie was trying to unmask Satan to reveal the bastard that he is and succeeded. Jesus Christ is the lord . God bless you man

any reason why you are using the music from Carrie as opposed to Tubular Bells? The Exorcist Is The Greatest Horror Movie Ever!

Just happened to be another great piece of horror film music that seemed to fit well for that segment! Plus, I used tubular bells at multiple points throughout the four videos and I didn't want to overdo it 😂

Old people die... it is what happens when you get old! But to declare the deaths as a part of some 'cursed' film production ...is simply production studio publicity propaganda!

I agree...so ridiculous. Ellen Burstyn is still alive in her 90s, so why is that? Max Von Sydow loved to about 90 also. Why did they escape this curse?
