The clip of Prax talking about cascade failure is kind of a key point for the series, imo. He distinguishes between "simple simple" systems, "simple complex" systems, and "complex complex" systems. Simple simple systems are like simple machines, like say a bycicle. There are only a limited number of parts, so if one breaks, the whole system becomes useless, but on the other hand because the failure points are known we can engineer them strong and take safeguards. Complex complex systems are like ecosystems or economies. There are far too many moving parts to know in advance what will fail, but they are (hopefully) deep and adaptive enough that parts overlap functions and so one piece failing doesn't bring the whole system crashing down. What the Belt and really the whole Solar System have done in the Expanse is fall into the trap of a "complex simple" system. The trade routes, water supplies, food supplies, etc they've developed out in space are too complex to predict exactly how a massive problem could start, but because the farming "ecologies" and resource supplies don't have a natural ecosystem behind them they're prone to collapse catastrophically like a simple system does when you remove a piece, like the farms being damaged here. (shipping food out from Earth is unrealistic both because of the gravity well and because Earth is desperate for resources itself.). That in turn causes Belters to starve, suffocate, or die of thirst when shipments even temporarily stop. Can't say exactly how because the networks of who is trading what for what are complex but it will happen because the Belt system is too simple and dependant on just a few sources of resources. (Think of the missed water shipments that started the whole series.) Then Earth and Mars can't get cheap metals and minerals from the Belt, the Martians can never terriform, and Earth's economy grinds to a halt and billions starve. All because farms on Ganymede were damaged. Tbh it's a problem were starting to face irl, as advanced economies have made us far wealthier than our ancestors but many crucial industries depend on just-in-time shipping of crucial goods (including food and water) across huge distances.

Did you guys notice the gigantic seawall around NYC? This world has already experienced climate change-induced sea level rise. In the opening credits, you can also see that they had to reconfigure Liberty Island to keep it from being underwater. This is such a nice little detail that they don't even need to mention in the show, it's just part of making the world feel like an ACTUAL future that could happen.
@ShantalhaitianPrincess6 жыл бұрын
in the books they talk about the climate change in great detail

Dude that is such a good observation. Did not notice this when watching - Nahid
@kennethpryde9666 жыл бұрын
Thing is, once you have easy access to space travel and space manufacturing, global temperature is relatively easy to manipulate. You make sheets of molecule thin reflective foil and spread them in a broad pattern facing the sun. While they might be quite large individually, people on the ground wouldn't even be able to see them due to distance. If it gets too cool, you can just turn a few sideways until the weather systems re-balance. In fact, you could make the sheets only reflect the infra-red light, or heat, and let all of the more useful wavelengths through. If you have transparent infra-red photoelectric cells, your solar shield would also be power generators.
@dapeach066 жыл бұрын
Kenneth Pryde this might help with temperatures (assuming it works correctly and doesn't cause unintended side effects), but it won't have any effect on the other changes brought about by the additional CO2 and other greenhouse gases that caused the climate change in the first place, and if CO2 levels continued to rise, reflecting incoming radiation (IR, light or other) would not be able to keep up. It could be one of many solutions that when used together, could work, so long as a method of reducing the CO2 was implemented as well
@kennethpryde9666 жыл бұрын
Horse-feathers! Outside of heat, the primary problem with higher CO2 is carbonic acid. That is a problem, but it's got very little to do with climate change. And plants actually wouldn't mind higher levels of CO2, generally. Studies show plants grow faster in higher CO2 environments. As fission and fusion become more available (which they clearly are in the show) we would just need to leave Mother Nature the hell alone and she'll clean up our mess for us just fine. Most people have climate change backwards. It's not about the air getting hotter, it's about the oceans getting hotter. Warmer oceans means more powerful storms, in both winter and summer. Warmer seas means more water vapor in the upper atmosphere. And here's a dirty little secret, water vapor is the single most powerful greenhouse gas there is. Ever notice how in winter it usually warms up on a cloudy day? Cool the oceans back down to where they were at the turn of the century and all of the symptoms people are afraid of go away.

When this show was originally airing a lot of people complained that it was hard to follow, but you guys are so on point with your observation. Not necessarily right, but noticing all the right things. It's really fun listening to you piece it all together.
@HickoryDickory864 жыл бұрын
People were really saying thar? It's not hard to follow. I guess they think so because most people are just mentally lazy now. That's the problem. If a show or movie has even a basic plot anymore people think it's deep and complex. Kinda sad. This show has far more than a basic plot, true, but it's not hard to follow. So ridiculous that that was a complaint.

5:42 - And this is one of those parts where I remember reevaluating Errinwright a a character and started to really like him. He's definitely a war hawk with the desire to always keep Earth top dog, but I also feel he definitely loves Earth, cares about it, and will not let someone else throw bullshit in his face. And - no spoilers! - as shown later on, he is absolutely a Player. He'll make moves and get shit done on his own initiative. Note: I am not saying he is a Good Guy, but he has redeeming qualities to him. Mao is the one I personally think of as being a pure villain.
@lawrencegough6 жыл бұрын
Gangrel Aussie yes, I was pleased to see him being developed as a character. Chrisjen was kinda left alone as the Earth political player, so it was good to see other politicians becoming important. We need multiple players in this game, and they need to be characters, not just one dimensional. Well done Expanse!
@allyourmoney6 жыл бұрын
I don't even think Mao is a pure villain. He's not motivated by pure power like some despot. He truly wants the same thing Dresden wanted----to turn humans into gods. But he does have a monstrous ego, which prevents him from seeing the enormous risks to humanity with his program. He's a True Believer. Extremely dangerous, but probably capable of change if someone could truly enlighten him. Unlike say, Emperor Palpatine who simply doesn't give a shit.
@KainErrow6 жыл бұрын
allyourmoney First off, even after the prequels and all the B.S. Lucas and now Disney has done: Palpatine *is* the shit. ;) Secondly, I don't know what to believe with Mao's motivations and actual intent, because when you have the ridiculous amount of wealth both the show and books grant him, you become untrust-worthy by anyone and everyone. The only plan or code he follows is the one that's most beneficial to him and his Legacy: he doesn't care about humanities immortality, he's after his own.
@allyourmoney6 жыл бұрын
Lol, I am not an expert on SW whatsoever. I was just desparately grasping for an example. But Mao has chided Sadavir on his lack of "patriotism" & vision a couple time & he sounded pretty sincere about it. There's definitely some fanatical belief there. But there's ALSO plenty of megalomania & maybe he's in denial about his own desire for legacy. I'm sure he'll be better defined next season.
@KainErrow6 жыл бұрын
allyourmoney Yeah No, I gotcha, but I just loved Palpatine in all the movies even while I understood a lot of other issues PLUS I disagreed with you on Mao while not having a great argument to back it up ... so I led with Star Wars. ;) xD

I really like the guy they got to play Prax and how he comes across in the show. In the books, there are any number of times where my sympathy wore thin and I just wanted him dead. (He was a good guy still, but my frustration buttons were getting mash-spammed)
@ChipMatthews6 жыл бұрын
He was so weak and whiny in the books. It's understandable because of what he's going through, but still grating. Show Prax is way more likeable. Great casting.
@allyourmoney6 жыл бұрын
Haven't read the books, but show Prax seems like an audience surrogate. Not particularly badass. Not a mad genius, but reasonably bright & a bit on the nerdy side. He's the kind of person that watches this show.
@dapeach066 жыл бұрын
Yeah, prax in the book was a bit too much of a socially inept nerd stereotype, and while people like that do exist, it's good to see scientists on TV that aren't portrayed that way
@astroalfrodo6 жыл бұрын
I liked Prax on the books. Just finished re-reading Caliban's War and I confirmed that he is some kind of space-druid. He really shines on the technical and sciency stuff on the books and being a scientist myself I enjoyed how he was curious about everything new around him... I like how the show fixes him at the start of the story, can't wait for Season 3 and what's coming for him to shine :)

Martian’s are trained at 1G. The gravity isn’t a major problem for them, it’s that mixed with the atmosphere of Earth (which will naturally be different than the Mars Cities) that causes an issue for them.
