God! Same here. Been trying to get my two best buddies to watch The Expanse for years now, and they avoid it like I'm trying to push crack cocaine on them. Then again, I did get them onto Game of Thrones back in the day, and we all know what a disaster that show ended up becoming. They got even more into it than me, reading the Ice and Fire books and lore, and just when they got invested, they learn G.R.R Martin will never finish the series. So I guess they now resent me twice over for introducing them to it.

Same, and I think it's a combination of the fact far fewer people than I realized like sci-fi, and the fact that the show isn't super popular. If suddenly it was being pushed as hard as a Marvel show or Game of Thrones then everyone would be watching to see what the big deal is, but the show is still largely undiscovered out of its bubble of dedicated fans.
@Yesquire0
@Yesquire0 Жыл бұрын
@@julius-stark OK, I'll say it. The Expanse is an exceptionally smart show. Its appeal is limited to exceptionally smart people, which is a rather smallish target audience. Trying to get people with average smarts to watch this show is like trying to get people to play chess with you. Those are the people who lose interest after the first few episodes, proclaiming the show to be "slow". The Expanse asks its audience to actively participate by speculating as to future events and the eventual outcomes of the multiple mysteries first presented in s.1. Most viewers are really not interested in that level of participation. It takes too much mental energy. Personally, after watching The Expanse, any other TV show is about as interesting as watching a test pattern. The tragedy, from a financial viewpoint, is that if the average TV viewer who could absorb the early episodes, stick with the show, and get to the point where the mysteries start being resolved, will be hooked by the action and beautifully written characters.

@@jerodast, do you remember the scene where Errinwright is talking to his lab techs and asking if they found any traces on the armor of anything that ought not to be on Ganymede? That's funny, the first thing I said to my wife when the hybrid was holding on to the core was "My Precious". It looks the same as when Gollum was falling into Mt Doom holding on to the ring. Both were so obsessed with their Precious that they were oblivious to their deaths by fire.

I second this suggestion. Some of those #SaveTheEXpanse videos and tribute videos were just spectacular, and in one case the guy who made one of them actually got hired by Amazon to do actual ads for them for Season 4, after a local movie theater played his video before a movie and people thought it was a legit movie trailer (the theater projectionist or manager was an Expanse fan who loved it and played it (for free) before an MCU movie, I believe). I think she'd be perfectly fine to watch them in the middle of Season three (between the books) in terms of not getting spoiled. I still show them to people when I'm trying to get them into the Expanse. Special mention to Zurik 23M, Sunrise 621, MARGARITA LIFE, and Ed A. (the guy who was hired by Amazon)

Holden’s response to the proto-goblin is a really good show of ptsd triggered response. It seems over the top, but I think he’s having basically a version of a panic-attack due to what happened on Eros. The way he’s out of his damn mind going full Captain Ahab reminds me of people I know with war zone trauma, and I think that was what Holden was trying to tap into for those scenes.

One of the core themes of science fiction is 'reason and understanding solves problems.' It's often overshadowed by other factors or absent in many takes on SciFi. But one of the reasons I adore The Expanse is it maintains some of this element, without being too simplistic about it. Reason and understanding doesn't solve EVERY problem, of course. But just brilliant writing.

Amazon certainly didnt helped at all asking to short season 6 from 10 down to 6 eps .. after they had allready shrinked down 13 to 10)

If you go back and watch the end of 2x07 where the Bobbie sees the hybrid you will see it's chest starts glowing white and then there's an explosion sound as Bobbie turns away and the screen turns white. That's the self destruct device that the hybrid in this episode removes from itself. It seems the knowledge of this device was able to cross between hybrids. Heh, "proto-gollum" was brilliant! Thanks for that! ☺ And just like Gollum, you (or at least I) can feel sympathy for the person it once was, while still recognizing that it may just have to die. Yes, it was once human, but it's also the stuff that ate Eros! I wouldn't want it on _my_ planet! (At least not with what we know so far...) Amos's apology to Naomi is such an amazing, revealing moment-I love seeing people react to that, and you did not disappoint! It's so disconcerting but heart-breakingly logical. Yes, Wes Chatham has those abs and stuff, but even book-Amos, who was nowhere near as physically attractive, could make you fall in love with him for stuff like that!

The way he says "I made you put me down" so disappointed in himself, breaks my heart. (SPOILERS FOR LATER VIEWERS NOT INTO S3 YET) The end of this arc has one of Amos's most "badass" lines, to the evil doctor. But the majority fan reaction of cheering to it really pisses me off. Amos is fundamentally a tragic character. We should root for him to trust himself BEYOND "being that guy".

It took my son 2yrs to get me, then it took me 2yrs to get my daughter! I absolutely love your reactions to this show! Amos knows a lot about how people die! He has a fan nickname " Murder Snuggles!" I figured you would appreciate the shirtless scene! Lol! There are so many emotional moments in this one! Amos has his share. The talk with Naomi about him making choices, his talk with Holden. At this moment I need to heavily impress upon you to pay special attention to the dynamic between Amos and Prax! It will serve you well! Prax came in clutch! Team ABC was so good! Now you know why Bobbie is a fan favorite! The banter between Chrisjen and Cotyar is priceless! One thing I realized in this episode that has happened more than once on this show is the beautiful monologs that Naomi has over crazy action scenes playing out at the same time! Here are our thoughts after your thoughts. For some reason it wouldn't allow me to ammend them at the bottom of the previous comment. We hate Dr. Strickland, too. There is no death too bad for him. Seeing Avasarala out of her depth in this episode was a LOT of fun to watch. This allows the other two to step up...and they both do. The idea that Cotyar is not paying HER back, but paying her son...by keeping his mother alive. Loved that line. Make us love him, even more than we already do. Bobbie is an amazing personality, especially now that she's been given the breadth to expand on her character and why she is the way she is. BUT, she is still a badass in that Mech Armour. So cool how she just did her business WITHOUT any worries at all. Oh, yeah, Fred Johnson. It will be definitely interesting the next conversations that Holden and Fred have. Who do you think will have to eat crow? if any? What do you think will happen now in the solar system, now that the protomolecule is out of the bad...and there is NO way to rid it? What happens next? The next season is going to be AMAZING. About how The Expanse was cancelled. There are many articles written about it, but the nuts and bolts of it was...the SyFy Network got good numbers for them, but not enough traffic to warrant the budget that it initially gave the show. It was supposed to be the show that made SyFy a BIG name, but it just didn't have the reach. When Amazon bought it, it had a built in base of people that had AmazonPrime all around the world...who automatically GOT the show...just by being a customer. When it aired, it was a MASSIVE success on the platform. Also, Amazon was able to give it a even bigger budget, also...they were allowed to allow Avasarala to speak like she speaks in the books. IF you think you love her NOW, you don't know ANYTHING yet...till you hear her when Amazon is helming the Series. Oh, yeah. Lastly, just saying...your theories are scary. Also, you are NOT old...42 is the perfect number (have you ever read the book Hitchiker's Guide to the Universe?). SO, 42 is the PERFECT number. Also, I'm (Graff) 56...I'm getting old...so I can actually say that. Perspective. We sent Happy Birthday to you via IG or Twitter, but we can say it again, here...Happy Birthday...and MANY more! Happy Birthday Xander, too. We love your craft...thank you.

Good stuff but I find myself debunking a slightly apocryphal myth. Amazon did not really, um, expand the budget that much. I can't give exact figures but the show operated similarly in terms of production capability. "That Amazon money" is an overstatement fans have embraced. However, three things did actually happen: 1. Amazon's pickup created confidence. By partnering up for distro and financing, Amazon provided Alcon with renewed vigor to tell the story they had planned. One of the smart (though not unique) things THE EXPANSE did was to "break" (read as: examine and begin planning) the next season before the current season ended production. So, there was already a framework developed when the greenlight hit. With a new audience ahead, along with the existing audience, there was a confidence which aided execution. Like a prize fighter whose physical capability was the same, the boost of confidence increased performance. And it showed in how seasons 4-6 unfolded. 2. The timing was important. That relatively quick decision by Amazon _saved money_ because there was a cost paid by Alcon for mothballing production assets between seasons. The clock was running out on that after cancellation. By picking up the show, the balance sheet for mothballing vs the savings on sunk costs (sets, props, costumes, tech, etc.) were more favorable. As a show continues, each season can be cheaper to produce because you have an inventory of assets built up. So, production value can increase onscreen. Amazon's timing allowed that process to continue which, by leveraging sunk costs, makes each successive season seem like it has a bigger budget, even if that's not true. 3. Access to server farms. This is the aspect I know the LEAST about (I'm not a post-production guy) but one asset Amazon has in spades is server farms. By increasing this capacity for the show, it allowed for several things related to production timelines. Quicker renders mean more allowable complexity, better feedback/adjustment cycle, and crisper polishes. In a way, it's like getting more money (much like the Lucasfilm/ILM in-house pricing can increase production value without adding to production costs). It's an invisible lump sum. Not technically an additional budget but effectively better value. TL;DR: Amazon didn't _inflate_ the show's budget like fans have suggested. It gave stability which allowed for continued savings from sunk costs, added to the audience, and provided better tools. And the production itself knew how to leverage those advantages against its gathered experience and just did the same thing it always did but did them better each season. A lesser production team would not have done these things as well as THE EXPANSE team did. Now, the source here is effectively "Trust me, bro" but, really, trust me, bro.

@@AngeloBarovierSD Huh, soo true. Its not how much they money they were alloted, rather its how well they used said money. Thats a life lesson that is. One example I heard from their podcast was the scene of Bobbie's defection. The scene as they initally imagined was a complicated chase through the city streets, which they ulimately couldn't do because of time and budgetary constraints. So instead they did the drone shot of her running through the Embassy courtyard, and crossing the DMZ and onto UN territory. An absolutely great scene that works on a story, character, and thematic level. Another GREAT show I followed with a comparatively small budget, but notheless created an amazing, immersive world, was The Last Kingdom.

What a show! What a season finale! It's just incredible what they pull-off between the plotting, character development, visualizations, camera movements. Just great. Amos is the goat of this show, imho. Now... for more amazing gladiator bods, crazy characters, violence, and way *way* more sex, I recommend the first couple seasons of Spartacus. Nick Tarabay (Cotyar in Expanse) plays a similar character, with much more to do. Which is what reminded me of Spartacus.

Fun Fact : The actress who plays Bobby - ....Frankie Adams - is a trained boxer in real life and those were real punches she was throwing ( "real" as in not the kind of faked actor punches meant to look good more than they would actually be effective if they landed). She certainly didn't need a stunt-person for her fight scenes.

Prax is one of the best Written "Smart Guy" I've seen on TV. He sounds exactly as a quirky scientist sounds when talking about science, when he is focused doing his things, he is always 'one level of abstraction' above everyone else. It probably has to do with one of the writers (Ty Frank) being married to an actual Scientist that is often the "Smartest person on the conversation without realizing it", and Prax is a bit of that, he doesn't realize others might not follow him that easily.

Your expression at the Arborgast being split apart was probably exactly like mine when I first saw it. I agree. I think Prax wanted to look it in the eyes before deciding. You can thank Thomas Jane for all that set vomit. He kept wanting to add it in. 😁😁 Oh you have to stop watching the Opening for season 3. It contains a spoiler. The show was canceled because the SyFy channel is dumb. When they made their initial deal they got broadcast rights and first shot to air episodes. And they decided to let other companies do the streaming. So they'd air an episode once, and streaming services could then just continually air them after that. No one had to wait for SyFy to re-air episodes when they could just stream them at will. So SyFy dropped financing for broadcast leaving, which also killed streaming, and left the show in limbo until Amazon picked it up.

When it comes to the possible humanity left in the proto-goblins, I completely sympathize. What we have to remember is two important things. Naomi when she says "No one knows what the proto-molecule wants, or what it's doing." The other is the proto-molecule is continuously learning, and it doesn't care about life. Dresden, Errinwright, Pierre-Mao, and the rest keep operating under the delusion that they can control it. Like children who've discovered a box of high end fireworks, and they start looking for matches and lighters.

I was so sad when I heard the show was being canceled. I started watching it from the beginning. It had been years since I had watched another science fiction show of this quality (BSG reboot). But since it was on SyFy channel, it was getting enough recognition. And since science fiction shows are expensive to make, they really need to have good viewership numbers. Good quality science fiction shows are pretty rare. But I'd like to think that I helped play a small part in getting it picked back up by Amazon. I watched the shows live to help with the ratings, and I signed petitions, wrote reviews, and emailed Amazon. I was so thrilled when I heard they picked the show back up.

A gentle reminder. Book 2 does not end until season 3, episodes 5 & 6. Again, highly recommended to watch them in one sitting. Book 2 ends half way through season 3, so they cram all the good parts of book 3 into half a season and that last half is really intense. Buckle up. It's going to be a wild ride.

11:59 is Amos needing time to deal with what Naomi did, before he is willing to deal with her. It's a way to distance himself from a reaction he might later regret. 18:07-18:30 with the time to process, Amos was able to express in a more calm manner, so Naomi would understand.

Just a heads up on an episode title coming up. Sometimes people think that the ‘v’ in delta-v refers to ‘5’ but it is short for ‘velocity’ and delta is sometimes written as the Greek Δ. It’s a neat rocket term used a ton in rocket navigation. As an avid Kerbal Space Program fan, it is neat seeing Δv being referenced, lol. TLDR: v means velocity, not 5, lol.

Keep in mind that Dawes might have Cortizar, but he doesn't have a protomolecule sample. Now Fred has a sample... should create an interesting balance don't you think? I'm really excited for the season 3 reactions. Going to be fun! Also, fun side note. Elias Toufexis, the actor who played the spy Kenzo back in season 1, is the person doing the motion capture for the protomolecule hybrid. I thought that was kind of interesting. That isn't to say there's some kind of connection with the character, he's just a prolific mocap performer apparently.

Interesting point about Chrisjen being weak and not knowing what to do here, while situationally true, is not the entire truth. She knew to bring Bobbie and Cozjar in the first place, and then trust them to do their thing. Kind of goes back to your point about Kirk and surrounding himself with the people that know what you don't.

Calaban is in reference to Shakespeare's Tempest. Caliban was the demi-human son of a sorceress that ah, um, Prospero attempted to 'civilize'...and it didn't take. So presumably the thing is called Project Caliban because they were creating demi-humans though 'sorcerous' technology, but there's the double meaning of...expecting to control these entities is foolish.
