The best answer to why Miller kills Dresden comes from Miller himself “because you were listening to him”. Although a psycho, Dresden was making sense to Fred and Holden.
@unbeheld
@unbeheld 6 жыл бұрын
Miller shot him because even a cynic such as himself was getting tempted by the potential application of the protomolecule. He also knew that if he himself could be bought then a lot more corrupted power players would fight for it. Lastly he also knew if he didn't kill him right then and there that Dresden would get away with genocide.

What I love most about The Expanse is that the ships don't have "energy shields", "deflectors", or other far-future, magical tech. Just inches of armoured plating. And the only way to protect yourself against fast-moving torpedoes are point-defence cannons (PDCs) that have to shoot the warheads down before they hit you. But straight up bullets? You better pray you have a great pilot to outmanoeuvre those speedy sumbitches...
@benjaminodonnell258
@benjaminodonnell258 6 жыл бұрын
Matthew Jacob Ramos The thing about kinetic weapons like PDC bullets or railgun slugs is that while they're unstoppable and mostly undodgeable in CQB (Alex used the bulk of the station as cover to partially get around this), at long range they're useless because then you DO have the time and delta-v to dodge. The other thing I loved was that all Alex's manoeuvres were mainly about staying out of the field of fire of the Stealth Ship's spinal mounted (i.e. fixed forward firing) railgun. As shown in all those sims, one hit from that monster cannon at that range and it would have been all over.
@troggdorthesecond

One other detail I love is that even when the engines are out. The ships keep moving. There’s no hard stop or anything, because after all, nothing can slow you down in a vacuum.
@thepsion5
@thepsion5 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks to Alex's quick reaction time, the first shot only grazed them - you can see the chunk it carved out of the top of the ship at 10:29. If that had been a solid hit, the railgun round and the resulting shrapnel would have killed everyone in the room.

he actually does take a glancing shot, which is lucky, and remarks that another one like that's going to tear them in half. The impulse torque makes the Roci spin and all, I just love those little details.
@ShasOFish
@ShasOFish 6 жыл бұрын
The reason why the station doesn't do anything while the Roci is coasting in, is because the station is supposed to be abandoned. If their sensors go active, and they start sending radio signals in every direction to try to detect what's nearby, it will light up the sensor boards of every warship nearby, saying effectively "hey, we're something interesting that wasn't here before!" The stealth ship is the same way, and has even less of an excuse. This gives the Roci its biggest advantage; in the books, the stealth ships are described as very much the space equivalent of a ballistic missile submarine; a weapon of strategic, rather than tactical value. Close in, they aren't nearly as effective, as their railgun can't be turned quickly enough to counter a nimble foe (hence why she only managed a single glancing hit), and the limits of its stealthy shaping mean it only has four PD guns, mounted that only two can cover any given point. Compare that to the Roci, who can throw 4-5 because of the way she's built, and is much, much more maneuverable.

Like everyone else is saying, Dresden (the scientist Miller capped in the head) was a true believer. And was speaking like someone who had no fear of getting into anything resembling trouble. The knowledge he held would have been sought after by every powerhungry sumbitch in the system and contribute to more misery, and people would spare no expense protecting him. Thoth Station was a secret because this dude was not supposed to be found. Miller just took the shortcut to the end result, probably sparing millions of innocent lives.

The scene with Avalsarala and Souther is made all the better by knowing that Cotyar is sitting right behind them, out of focus in the background. When Souther gives his "you are the worst out of all of them" yell, she very gently glances back towards him, as a "this is what I wanted, everything is cool" gesture.

Hey guys! The belter kid from 1st season, his name is Diogo and he is played by a great kid named Andrew Rotilio. He originally was set for just that one ep,on Ceres where Miller bust him for stealing water. They liked him so much they gave him a second ep, the one with his uncle. They loved him and brought him back for S2! Miller and Diogo are great together! Diogo and Drummer are both golden characters that are not in the book series at all at this point, but turn out guick fan favorites! (Drummer is freds cheif of security, played by the delightful Cara Gee)Andrew is one of the cast that is great at conversing with fans during off season and live tweets during.

The scientist's name---Dresden---is a reference to a German city that was firebombed by the Allies in WWII. At least 22,000 people died over a three night period. It was considered practically a war crime because residential districts were targeted alongside the industrial sector. The military brass justified it by saying it was an attempt to break the morale of Nazi Germany even though it became clear that all civilian bombings----Axis & Allied alike----had the exact OPPOSITE effect ( Hiroshima & Nagasaki obviously excepted, as they ended the war). So it was a needless slaughter of thousands. An act of terrorism by today's standards. The Protomolecule infection of Eros is similar to the firebombing of Dresden. A mass murder of innocents with a flimsy justification. Also, random trivia: The actor that plays Dresden also played PFC Daniel Spunkmeyer, the co-pilot in Aliens who gets munched by the Xenomorph at some point in the movie.

"We've conquered the Universe" Sorry to say this again, I know these reactions were made a while ago, but the Universe is literally everything in existence. You mean that humanity has conquered the Solar System. The solar system isn't even 1 lightyear across (except the Oort cloud, depending on definition of where it ends), but the Milky Way galaxy, where our solar system is, is 120,000 light years across, and the observable universe is 46.6 billion light years across.

Is it possible that the Normies believe ships in the Expanse travel faster than light instead of the daily/weekly/monthly affair it takes to get from one planetary object to another? It could explain their understanding of scale. The show doesn't often say how long travel time is in between locales. This could cause a bit of confusion to those unaware of the distinction. The show's starship, the Mormon vessel "Nauvoo" would take many human lifetimes even at its fastest speed to reach a nearby star. So, for the sake of simplification, I shall go with the Douglas Adams quote: "Space is big. Really big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist, but that's just peanuts to space."

+CelticRabbit And that's just if you take into account the Oort cloud... the Earth is around 8 light minutes from the Sun, Mars around 12 and a half, the belt from 18 to 26 and a half, Jupiter 43, and Saturn (and thus Phoebe), which seems to be about as far as the Expanse officially extends, around one hour and 20 minutes... Uranus is further away at almost two hours 40 minutes, and Neptune even further at four hours and 10 minutes... but even Pluto, which is what most people who don't know about the Kuiper belt and even less the Oort cloud or the heliopause would consider the edge of the solar system, is just at around _five and a half hours..._ space _is_ big, and _mostly empty..._

Fun fact: the CEO of Fedex also owns Alcon Entertainment, the makers of this show. Re: Miller- his reasoning gets covered in the next episode but I don’t think they did as good a job as the books did. If you don’t want a mild spoiler, skip this.......Miller killed Dresden because he was getting everyone to see his line of reasoning and agree with it. If you go by absolutely cold logic, then what Dresden was saying made sense, but at the same time it’s still an entire asteroid station full of people who had no say that got fed to the protomolecule just to see what it would do. When Fred started buying into Dresden’s cause, Miller could see that any government would do the same, and be willing to let Dresden walk free as long as they got results. So Miller couldn’t let that stand.

The reason why Miller killed Dresden was because he was making sense. He actually would have got away with this, since he almost managed to convince Holden and Johnson to let him continue his research. Miller couldn't let this happen, so he just shot him. Usually I find most shows fail when they present us with a morally questionable action. I usually see it one way or another when a character does some "morally questionable" thing. My reasoning ( & possibly Miller's) for killing Dresden: 1. He's a mass murderer & needs to die. 100K Belters dead in the show. 1 million in the books. If you let him continue his work, he'll be protected for life. This isn't just about Julie. This is about Miller's people. 2. More than likely the PM was sent around a billion years ago. That's more than enough time for the Aliens to realize it got stuck in an outer orbit & to send another. Since they haven't, they're PROBABLY EXTINCT by now. 3. Even if the Aliens are still around, they work on a VERY long time scale so if you kill Dresden & have to start the project all over again, then a few months, years or even CENTURIES won't make any difference at all. You have plenty of time AND Fred Johnson now has possession of it. The Belters now have a huge chunk of it. In the meantime Dresden should be put down. You can get justice AND continue the protomolecule research while keeping it under BELTER control.

hmm, that looked very cyber punk'ish (very much like Blade Runner). And with Purefoy in the cast, i'll definitely be watching :)

Looks like way more brawl than brains but fuck it, if Michael Eklund is in it, it's bound to be good.

I'm kinda curious to see how it works out. I read the books it's based on and it's pretty clear they're going to be doing a fair bit of editing to any number of timelines. I do like that they have Joel Kinnamon as "OG" Takeshi Kovacs, but I'm curious if they'll really sell a certain character as the purest example of evil ever.

I hope Navi and other Normies read the book, too. Preferably before the show comes out.

James C I dunno, It's one of those books I have a bit of a hard time with recommending, exactly. It's definitely a fun book (and series) but there's a bit of mixed messaging in it with regards to women / feminism (note that in basically every book the real BBEG is a woman), and it's heavy on pulp. I still love a lot of the Quellcrist Falconer quotes, though: _re: the establishment_ "And time and again they cream your liquidation, your displacement, your torture and brutal execution with the ultimate insult that it’s just business, it’s politics, it’s the way of the world, it’s a tough life and that it’s nothing personal. Well, fuck them. Make it personal." Luvit

The scientist made a lot of sense, which is where the danger lies. I understand it, because if I thought I could ensure humanity's survival, even its transcendence, for all eternity, and it would cost a billion lives, I would spend the rest of my days crying myself to sleep lamenting the sacrifice of that billion, while humanity's future unfolded, assured.
