Pregnant women also come to Ganymede from all over the system to give birth because the conditions there lower the risk of birth defects from stellar radiation.

Mayhemm007 I think that's the one part of Ganymede they haven't - at least yet - talked about on the show. It wasn't really all that super relevant to the story in the books, either, it just gave more depth and importance to Ganymede as a place no one should want to eff with. But it was it's status as a mutually beneficial breadbasket to the Belt and Mars that really made it what it was.

It's the Belt's equivalent of the farmland in the upper Midwest. It's the Bread Basket of the Belt. It also has a magnetic field, which deflects solar radiation away making it safe for pregnant women to give birth.

I've seen this a number of times, but have been unable to fathom why the orbital mirrors stay up while whole, but come crashing down when shattered. Once shot, the mirrors are destroyed, but ought the pieces not remain in orbit? Would being shot to pieces slow them enough to deorbit them?

Loving these! The Expanse is such a great show and I'm still happy you guys are loving it and continuing the reaction despite the community that follows this show being small compared to your other shows. We are a small, but passionate fanbase that are absolutely grateful you are watching and reacting to the Expanse each week! And at the end, they were on the moon Ganymede that orbits Jupiter and serves as an agricultural station for both Earth and Mars, with both having their own areas, hence the line they are not allowed to cross. The Martian Marines we have been following this season got assigned there (the assignment was mentioned by the Lieutenant that got killed during this episode on the ship during the space skirmish a few episodes ago, I think) and Bobbie Draper (Gunny) was upset at being put there instead of going somewhere more exciting since they were basically just doing sentry border security. Then all hell broke loose. And that space battle above was Earth and Mars firing on each other due to confusion with the com jams making them believe the other side was initiating contact, but we see at the end that it was the third party. The things you saw shattering weren't the ships, those just got shot up because they thought the other side was attacking, the shattering things were giant agricultural mirrors used to help focus light onto the ag domes, if I'm not mistaken.

I've seen it cause confusion later on when Alex says "show me the entire system" by which he means only the Jupiter planetary system and it's orbitting moons. my favourite is Europa because in my language that is also the continent I live on. and because there might be life in Europa.

I will always be thankful to The Expanse for putting the real-world concept of the ‘torchship’ into mainstream media. Before it, I’d always thought of ships that could maintain a high constant acceleration as too over-the-top and something only useful for interstellar travel. But The Expanse not only proved me wrong, it made it highly practical and engaging in a theater as large as the solar system. And little is sacrificed for good storytelling and interesting characters.

Ganymede's the bread basket of the Outer Planets and the Belt (it's got a magnetosphere so plants can grow there), and it's co-owned by the UN and the MCR, hence the tension at the border. The ships in orbit were from both countries, and when the UN marines started shooting at the monster, because comms were out everyone started losing their shit. No matter who fired the first shot, destroying Ganymede's orbital mirrors means disaster for the Outer Planets / Belt, which you'll learn about. Qui bono? Ask yourself who benefits from stability, and who benefits from chaos.

Fred Johnson firmly believes in "si vis pacem, para bellum" from what I can tell so far. First, he's painted as a villain but once we get to know him we see how he just wants to protect his people. I just don't know if I agree with him on his means to an end...

Triskan Yeah, it's got one of the best rape scenes in it on all of TV, a total can't miss. You can always tell that a show is gritty and mature when they make their rape scenes standout stuff. Triskan Maybe and my apologies for being super snarky there, everybody should be able to enjoy what they want. I was just really put off by the first season (maybe even just the first half), and I've never been able to forgive the show for that. Also, Michael Bay is the executive producer, which carries even more baggage to my mind.

They seem to be stuck in this Earth-centric POV, not realizing that The Expanse DEMANDS that you see it from Martian & Belter POV as well. The Belt is already at the mercy of the Inners & it'll only get worse because they more than likely have the protomolecule as well. The Belt needs to protect itself. Edit: Seems like they got it in the end. It's different in the moment, I guess.
@KainErrow
@KainErrow 6 жыл бұрын
allyourmoney Yeah, and there's certainly plenty of reason to realize everyone needs to get their own house in *some* kind of order, prior to getting all of those groups together at the same table. And the nuclear missiles and proto-matter work really well as bargaining chips: the one in plain sight, the other stashed in as secure and secret a rock as can be found. I'd say more in all of that but, to quote Dr. Who's best: *SPOILERS!*

I know I'm just saying that in this story humans are now spread out to the whole solar system. The Belters have been oppressed for generations & they're human, too. The Belters are in more danger of getting wiped out ( Eros being a freak occurance ) so I'm kind of rooting for the survival of the underdog, know what I mean? Not at the cost of Earth, or Mars, mind you. This is kind of like Game of Thrones where no one's really right, but everyone still matters, if that makes sense.

In addition to providing some background information, Epstein is talking about how his drive will allow Mars to become independent and for the mining of the solar system's resources to become practical. How a technological revolution can change existing political, economic and social structures, and then we cut to Ganymede and the emergence of a new technological revolution. It's the central theme of the episode, a paradigm shift.
@KainErrow
@KainErrow 6 жыл бұрын
As others have said, I was alright with It, as it was a signal of both a bit of a change of pace with the episode itself (the board doing a little reset), as well as exploring what large technological developments can do to civilizations. Their impact is so seldom immediately apparent, but sometimes they are shocking in the speed of change and the scope of it.

I'm fine with them talking during the show, It adds to what makes a great reaction and their own sometimes hilarious, sometimes tense reaction. There definitely are places where important bits of info are relayed that they obviously didn't catch, but unless we request they actually *do* rehearse their reactions, that's the price of spontaneity.

I thought the Epstein scenes were interesting juxtaposed with the protomolecule issues. Drives home the point that within each major advancement in humanity, there tends to be sacrifice and struggle attached to it. Without Epstein's discovery and death, humanity couldn't have gone past the asteroid belt.
