The glasses thing isn't what did it. He could've done it without...and everyone would've ignored him because it's too obvious. "That's not Henry Cavill. What the fuck would he be doing standing around wearing a Superman shirt here? That's just stupid. It's some fanboy trying to get attention with some cosplay." It's interesting to compare them, nonetheless. Especially their childhoods. Homelander, presumably, was tortured and manipulated all his life. Supe on the other hand, was loved and cherished, although he was constantly bullied which might have even contributed further to his development and restraint. We even see Supe reading Plato, probably figuring his identity out and morals. Homelander was even given such a chance.

Alex, the reason they didn't do more on his origin story (particularly his childhood and youth) is because it had already been done, many, many times ... in all the Superman movies and throughout all the seasons of Smallville. You are simply part of the .001% of the earth's population who hadn't seen it. 😅 For many of the rest of us, we already had a ridiculous amount of backstory & "time vested" in all that had come before, so this movie, along with the score, brought back a flood of memories & an emotional wallop with it. (Yes, I just used "wallop" for the first time in my life. Lol.) I will say that the casting of Lois did nothing for me --- like you, I never once believed/felt their connection. Look up Clark's high school love interest in Smallville: Kristin Kreuk as Lana Lang. Pretty sure you'd get behind that pairing. Anyhow, thanks for (once again) a great review. I appreciate what you do, brother!

Alex was expecting a Marvel like film, even looked for an end credit scene. This movie doesn't dwell on telling the character's emotions, it's just shown as it is from the perspective of the audience from the outside looking in. There isn't any way to portray Clark's depth the same way Marvel films do because Clark isn't human. No one could possibly relate to Clark because we are all human. How many times was Alex wrong reacting to scenes in this film when it came to Clark's reactions to specific scenes? Mr. Impulsive Alex can't even restrain himself to blurt out dark thoughts and would be more like Homelander than he would be Superman if he had their powers.
@Yo42169

It’s not the fact that they glossed over his backstory that I, personally, didn’t like but it was the way they handled Johnathan Kent and how much of a dick he was, especially in contrast with the comics where him and Martha were the best human beings you could possibly be and didn’t raise Clark to be a god who had to fit in with mortals but raised him as a human and to be as kind as them and even encouraged him becoming Superman
@docomega7862
@docomega7862 4 ай бұрын
@@Yo42169i don't suite agree that movie jonathan raised him to be a god. He thinks that because of his powers one day clark will be able to change the world. But he is afraid that the world will reject him and try to hurt him. So he wants clark to wait until he is an adult before he makes the choice of becoming a hero so that he is fully aware of the consequences of his choice and is strong and smart enough to handle whatever the world will throw at him and thrive. This for sure is not the traditional approach to superman where he is instantly seen as a hero and a symbol of hope. In this one, he has to earn the trust of the world to become their hope. And i believe that with proper time to flesh out this version of the story, it could've been at least good. But then we arrive to my biggest issue with the dceu, the abyssmal and rushed structure to compete with the mcu that doesn't leave room for character development. I would've loved to see this clark try his best to do good, slowly gaining the trust and love of the world, losing this image of a threatful god to become the symbol of hope. I would've loved to see the series of events that led to batman breaking his code. Which again, while not the traditional approach is still a valid way to explore the batman mythology (also the joker should be dead. If batman kills, presumably after joker killed robin, then joker should be the first casualty). But instead they chose to rush things and have the second movie be a poor attempt at civil war, the set of the justice league and the death of superman storyline. All that while clark has barely just became superman and we kno w nothing about these versions of batman and wonder woman

I think that it isn't fair to compare the emotional depth of Man of Steel to all of Marvel. I think there's some hindsight bias, because we had 10 years and 20 movies that built a deep connection. Tony's daughter, has she existed earlier, would not have been as impactful if we hadn't had all of the character development from the previous movies for him. There was no emotional depth for Tony with any character in the original Iron Man. It grows with the franchise. So, I think it isn't realistic to compare them like that.

He did try to take over Krypton, not for power, but because its leaders _did_ lead them to ruin, they _did_ ignore the problem until it was too late. Zod really did everything for the sake of his people, for the purpose he was _literally built with_ as explained earlier. He doesn't care how cruel, or how sadistic his actions look to others. He will always do whatever it takes to ensure Krypton live's on That emotional breakdown at the end before the final fight was real, he had absolutely nothing left and was going to kill Clark because it was all he could think to do

Comparing this to Iron Man…a less known superhero at the time it was released, and a better comparison for this film in general. Tony is shown to have a very realistic and understandable character arc All the characters have more depth than most of Man of Steel. And overall the tone and the film was just better and it was shorter than MoS. Needing to watch a TV series from decades ago to understand characters and their motivations is the reason the DCEU has sucked so bad. They try to speed run all these details because they assume you already know the characters but that leaves their films lifeless.

Superman was the first “superhero” appearing in June of 1938 in Detective Comics number one. Created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster from Cleveland, Ohio. Batman was created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger as a polar opposite of Superman. The same year Batman was created is the same year that the Nazis invaded Warsaw, Poland kicking off WW2. There’s a documentary called the origins of DC comics narrated by Ryan Reynolds.

@johnnyrocket1685 huh? that is absolutely not true. There has only ever been one studio. WB (now DC is their own) You are the one who has zero idea of what happened with the DCEU. There were constant changes in leadership, and the WB executives sent too many "notes" for changes. They change things like"camera styles and angles" (which tells me you don't know much about how films are made) because the DOP (Director of Photography) is different for each film, as is each director, who brings their own style and editing preferences, just as each film is written by a different writer/writing team. Marvel is run the same way. The difference is Marvel was unified under Kevin Feige, and the scripts were worked on until they were good (up until Endgame). The new DCU is under DC Studios, split away from WB Studios.

This take on Superman is built on the concept of "What if Superman existed in our real world?" rather than fully adapting the DC Universe from the comics to the screen. Since Superman is the first hero in this world, it's understandable (even though I don't particularly like it) that the Kents might struggle with Clark using his powers and revealing himself to the world. In this version, Clark’s abilities are limited by his parents' caution, which leads to him not fully developing his powers until adulthood. In the comics, especially Post-Crisis, Superman existed in a world where heroes had been active since the 1940s with the formation of the Justice Society of America. Clark developed his powers at a much younger age, becoming Superboy before transitioning into Superman when he moved to Metropolis, and both Kents were alive to witness his journey. I do enjoy Man of Steel more as an Elseworlds storyline, showcasing Superman in a world more grounded and reflective of our own, similar to what the Nolan Batman films achieved. But as a Superman film, I never really cared for it. Superman (1978) remains, for me, a much better introduction to the Man of Steel. It provides a more thorough look at his origin story, while Man of Steel assumes you already know the basics and focuses on offering a different spin on the character and his world. *What I liked:* Krypton is visually stunning in this film, blending ancient folklore with an H.R. Giger-inspired aesthetic. While I personally prefer other depictions of Krypton from the comics and animated series, this version still offered a unique and striking design, as well as an interesting history for the planet and its people. The cinematography is excellent, though I would have liked to see more color. Many superhero films post-The Dark Knight adopted that darker, grittier tone, and Man of Steel continued this trend with a dirtier, more grounded Superman, partly inspired by the New 52 comics. Michael Shannon absolutely shines as General Zod and, in my opinion, carried the entire film. The fight scenes were, of course, spectacular, and Hans Zimmer’s score was fantastic. *What I disliked:* Though it’s not featured heavily in the film, I’ve always found Metropolis dull and uninspiring. In the comics, Metropolis is the “City of Tomorrow”-a vibrant, Art Deco metropolis with a cool retro-futuristic 1950s aesthetic. It’s meant to be the opposite of Gotham City, a beacon of light contrasted against Gotham's darkness. So, I was disappointed when Metropolis ended up looking like just another generic American city. It gave me the same feeling as Gotham in The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises-just bland, lifeless, and lacking any real character. Hopefully, the new DC Universe under James Gunn’s direction will give us a visually stunning and alive Metropolis in the upcoming Superman film. It needs to feel unique, not like a copy-paste New York clone made just to be destroyed in CGI. The Fortress of Solitude being a Kryptonian scout ship? It was different, I’ll give it that, but it can’t compare to the classic Fortress from the comics, animation, or even films like Superman (1978). Nothing beats the true Fortress of Solitude, a place of peace and reflection. And finally, the death of Jonathan Kent... It’s a controversial topic, but personally, I was never a fan of how it was handled.

First of all, no one has been able to capture the duality of Clark and Superman like Christopher Reeve. The fact that Kevin Feige said that the blueprint for Iron Man (2008) and the MCU was Superman, should tell you everything you need to know. The score from the original films will never be beat, and the helicopter rescue scene to me still looks better than a lot of the current CGI. I can spot CGI just as easy as I can spot miniatures or green screens. By the way, I love this movie too, but there's a lot of people that can't see the good in both. 38:42 Alex, you missed it because you just don't know. But in this scene, there's a subtle morph of Henry Cavil's face into Christopher Reeve. Unfortunately you edited it out. To most of us GEN Xers, Reeve is the OG Superman, and it was amazing. The lack of emotional connection to the characters you describe are because you yourself said, you're not familiar with Superman, the origin story, or the mythology. Most of us who grew up before the age of Burton's Batman and the MCU, regardless of how deep we knew the lore, knew at least that much. Superman was the only game in town, and the original 1978 movie was a massive success and cultural phenomenom. So instead of telling a whole new origin story, this movie kinda glanced over some of the facts most of the audience already knew, and got right to the conflict with Zod and the Codex. Just like Superman Returns (2006 Brandon Roth film) skipped past the events of the original Superman movies as well. This movie was good, and I think one of the best DCU movies to date, but it was very much a continuation of the Superman series, not an outright reboot of the franchise.

I like you’re reviews they are always enjoyable. That being said I felt this one was, to coin your phrase ‘lacking in depth’. I don’t think it’s on purpose but more your lack of knowledge to pick up on what you’re seeing. That could be a failing of the film too. We have so many origin stories for Superman that Snyder didn’t want to waste too much time on it. I felt he did a good job, perhaps not to the lay person though. Regards to Zod, he’s actually a very complex character that in the end was fulfilling his life’s purpose. Remember Krypton’s leaders had literally destroyed the planet, he was trying to ensure its survival. He backed Joe-El until it was too late. Genocide aside he was actually a great and understandable villain. Regards to emotional beats I am somewhat with you on this one, only with regard to Louise and Superman. Emotionally their first meet was very deep, he literally saved her life. I felt like this scene could have been longer and establish their connection more. The emotion for me comes from Kal-El’s parents both on Krypton and earth. Their love for their son is obvious, as is his love for them, specially his earth parents. I felt very emotionally invested, perhaps cause I understand the lore more, who knows?! Things to mention Louis 100% knew who Clark Kent was. Snyder kept making biblical references to Superman being Jesus, the Church scene and him floating out the world engine door to then save Louis. The end fight scene that attracted some critical reviews I felt made perfect sense. Remember Superman is effectively God tier strong and when gods fight, trivialities like a city below don’t mean much. Lastly Superman killed the last of his people, he never wants to kill, let alone make him effectively the last of his race. The anguish in his scream makes this abundantly clear. Anyway overall Man Of Steel is a very under appreciated DCUE movie that for me is one of the best, as you will see. From Snyders visuals to Hans Zimmer score to the excellent cast it was a banger of a movie. Also Cavill IS Superman 😂

Spiderman was able to get away with that because Tobey's movies are extremely popular, and we'd just gotten a Spiderman movie 3 years prior to Hollands. In the case of this movie, I think skipping a lot of backstory and character development made me enjoy the movie on a superficial level. I like this movie the same way I like 2007 Transformers, they're a good time but they lack a lot.

Marvel is some soap opera drama. Dc is more epic story telling on a grander scale. The issue with DC movies is it will always lack that sense of drama for the bigger story arc. Most of the DC characters in the books aren't hung up with mundane human problems like being a freak mutant or having superpowers they didn't ask for. DC characters are usually accepting of what life gives them and they just deal with it the way they need to. Not drone on about the pain and agonize how they're all different like Marvel characters.

@@StankGremlin Watchmen books was actually an exercise into writing a DC characterization if it actually happened in the real world. If you lived in the 80's, it was a reflection to current events for the previous 30 years of that time. The story would be totally different if it were to be told now within the past 30 years.

I am an old, frail man, and have an adopted son who is for all intents and purposes invincible, and hundreds of times faster than I am. I will not only forbid him from helping me (thus ensuring the success of this suicidal plan), I will force him to watch me die right in front of him, giving him the final lesson in a message I have spent his life hammering into him: Do not even attempt to help those around you, even at no risk to yourself. Live in fear, and allow suffering to thrive all around you. If my final thought, as I am smashed to bloody pieces by flying debris, is that I have raised a son who would rather watch his father die than raise so much as a finger in his defense, then I will die a happy man, knowing that I have brought an invincible sociopath into this world."

The comic death of his father was also changed after the 1980s Superman reboot to make him more realistic. The thing this movie left out was the REASON...his father knew the world would not accept him and that governments would come after him. A thing barely touched on in the movie. The original Superman was total ASS for making it that the world would just accept the appearance of an all powerful Alien.

Instead of suicide, Jonathan sacrificed himself in order to protect Clark. Because what parent wouldn't do that for their child? Your perspective is typical of a selfish human with human thoughts not understanding the greater fate that could change the world. It's probably why The Boys is a more realistic show in this society than any Superman story.

I think the lack of a cohesive connection between Lois and Clark ties directly to the fact that Clark is _Grumpy Jesus_ in these films and not un-ironically a dork who wants to help and wants to fit in like he usually is. If the arctic scene where the two characters first meet had, say, a scene of Lois taking some small interest in Clark and wanting to either include him in the conversation or just have a small one-on-one chat with him (whether or not in that typical reporter interview way), followed by Clark noticing that she’s not only a kind person at heart, but someone patient and understanding and accepting of him, causing him to accidentally let his dorky side slip, followed by Lois being not-at-all turned away by his quirks, that could go a long way in making their chemistry more believable. Hell, that could lead into the talk when Lois first finds Clark again, her now being cozy enough around him to start nicknaming him Smallville, earning a stifled, awkward chuckle from him when he’s trying to cut to the chase. Better yet, the kiss scene: Lois dives in first, taking the lead and visibly catching poor Clark off guard before he reciprocates and starts to follow her lead. All of that leading up to right after the final battle where Clark’s had to make the toughest choice of his life. He remains on his knees, too hurt emotionally to stand, and looks up to her, simply pleading for her comfort.

Ah yes, another reactor starts off his DCEU journey. He's gonna start off on good terms with MOS, be completely disappointed by BvS, get his hopes back up with Wonder Woman 1, be completely uninterested by Suicide Squad 1, get his hopes up again after ZSJL, find Aquaman 1 and Shazam 1 entertaining enough, be on the complete verge of giving up with Wonder Woman 2, Black Adam keeps him interested a tiny bit, Suicide Squad 2 increases the interest a little bit more, finally gives up with Aquaman 2 and doesn't bother with the rest.

@@RevRyukin7 Nah, I'm smart enough to understand that Batman didn't start running people over with his batmobile or blowing them up with missiles even after he lost Jason Todd. I'm also smart enough to know that Batman would actually head over to the Court that got blown up when Superman was there, and you know, ACTUALLY be a detective and do what detectives do before jumping head-first into the bandwagon. And I'm also smart enough to know that Batman is smart enough to not get so easily manipulated by Luthor with such generic tactics. And I'm also smart enough to know Luthor isn't a Joker/Riddler hybrid. And lastly, I'm smart enough to know that everyone is smart enough to understand "the message" behind the Martha scene, still doesn't change the obvious fact that the execution of it made both God and Satan cringe and turn off their TV. But hey, who am I to argue? Snyder cultists are definitely revered as the most intelligent people on the planet by the masses.

Everyone has this idea what Superman is and is supposed to be. For 80 years and each generation has a gist but it's never the same character. Those who actually read his books, specifically throughout the 90's, this version of Clark is the most accurate adaptation of the character. He's not the boy scout that everyone expects him to be and he see himself as a human with a gift that scares him sometimes. The burden of saving the world weighs incredibly heavy on him not knowing why he exists for his entire life up until the point of where the movie plays out. The lack of depth that Alex is feeling is because no one can relate to someone like Superman, how could they? Maybe it's the same feeling that people who criticizes this movie lacks the depth inside themselves to step outside their myopic perspective looking for something that can't understand.

But like Marvel you gotta watch it all in order: Man of Steel (2013) Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition (2016) Suicide Squad (2016) Wonder Woman (2017) Justice League Snyder Cut (Don't bother with the theatrical release) (2021) Aquaman (2018) Shazam! (2019) Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020) Wonder Woman 1984 (2020) The Suicide Squad (2021) Black Adam (2022) Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023) The Flash (2023) Blue Beetle (2023) Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023)
