I love the scene in the OPA conclave, the way that Dawes politely acknowledges both Fred and Holden, and then proceeds to belittle them as politely as possible in the eyes of all the Belters in the room, a fantastic performance from Jared Harris. Then he goes sniffing about for information on what Fred must surely have, first going to Naomi, then Drummer, and then he finally gets what he wants from Diogo. Also the speculation about Drummer and Dawes's past was hilarious. Can't wait for next Sunday's, though I think that's the case pretty much every time.

Dawes is a guy that I love to hate, he is a beautiful asshole. though I'm not sure if I would like him in the book as much as I like him in the show. Jared Harris amazing performance makes all the difference here. I kinda see that with Marco Inaros, a friend of mine that read the books really like him, but since I just watched the show I hate him, its possible that the actor is just not likeable and is not selling the character very well.

There's a whole team of people who work on the dialect and accents and things, a few of the actors have spoken about it before. There are a bunch of specific accents and even local dialects. The thing you''re talking about with basic is called Basic Assistance. It's what people who don't have jobs get, though it's a little more complex than that. She was suggesting the guy would be fired and to never work again, effectively. The show does go more into that at several points.

You can't just accelerate, and toss some people out, and then "slow the ship down." A mass in motion remains in motion, at the same speed and direction, until acted upon by a force. So, to "slow down" a ship, they'd have to flip the ship around, point the engine in the line of travel, and then light it up to decelerate (or, more precisely, "accelerate in the opposite vector"). If they'd done something like that, someone would've seen them do it. Just turning off the engine doesn't slow down the ship. These little hints about Amos keep getting dropped, throughout the series. He's one of the most fascinating characters to ever appear on television. On Earth, "Basic Assistance," or "Basic," primarily consists of a set of coupons that cover the costs of living. So, people on "Basic" get housing vouchers, and food cards, and clothing vouchers, and other stipends that can only be used for certain things. Most of them don't ever get any "currency" they can use to spend any way they like. As one might expect, the system is rife with corruption and "work-arounds" and other ways for people to convert vouchers into cash. (Most of that gets discussed in the books, though, and not the TV series.) I really like it when you guys start to guess and theorize. You sometimes get really close, and other times you're completely off, and what you get right and what you don't is completely random. It's a blast. :)

_"So, to "slow down" a ship, they'd have to flip the ship around, point the engine in the line of travel, and then light it up to decelerate"_ Well, they could have thrusters they can point "forwards", that would slow you a bit.

@@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps "A bit" being the operative word here. The thrusters they have for maneuvering on the Roci are capable of at least 1G of thrust but there is no point to use them to decelerate in open space. @MrJethroha3 жыл бұрын
Yep, and unlike welfare or UBI, basic exists to prevent people from working, not as a stop gap measure for the unemployed or underpaid. Earth can't logistically employ 15 billion extra people or the environment and economy would collapse. It is a very dystopian vision of the future. It's also fairly unrealistic given that trends indicate world populations leveling out at 11 billion, not 30 billion.
@Johmpa3 жыл бұрын
It's also why organized crime is as big of a thing as it is. For half of the population it's the only way to get currency and to be able to aquire anything but the essentials. It acts not just as a black market but an entire black economy.

It gives a bit of energy to cells and takes some energy from the cells and converts them to more protomolecule (Kortezar talked about that a bit). I think it is readily apparent that Amos comes from a still mysterious background, but one which clearly was a world where immediately blowing the brains out of somebody who opposes you was not only a viable option, but probably the first option for all involved in the dispute, and best done before your opposition acts to implement that first option upon you. He's living in a different world right now, so he looks to others for how to get through this new territory. The majority of viewers think Amos is either mentally or emotionally disturbed. I think he's brilliant and free of any and all mental or emotional problems. He lived through where he came from, and that which did not kill him made him stronger than anybody coming from a pampered childhood. He's also a good dude to have on your side if you are going to war, or heading into a war zone.

@@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps Amos is hardly a figure over which to trigger a full-blown debate over moral relativism. If the discussion is limited to Amos, his essence cannot be debated absent the introduction of spoilers in the debate.
