You've seen the mushroom story. In season one when Miller was investigating that aqua theft on Ceres. That one maintenance guy with the OPA tat ate one when he found it on that water pipe..

The story about Bobby nephew and drugs takes place in short novella "Gods of Risk". They used that to give her some storyline because she was missing in book 4 except prologue and epilogue. Also its kinda mixed with what looks like prelude to her story from book 5. Anyway love the reaction. Cannot wait for more.

In many ways they used the empty space of this season to lay a lot of exposition to free up book 5 and 6 for a lot of action. Plus I have always seen the series as 3 trilogys. 1 The old society's of Earth, Mars and the Belt. 2 how the ring gates change those society's priorities and values. 3. The ramifications of their decisions.

Adam Savage did an interview with Wes Chatham and he seems to indicate Season 5 is going to adapt at least some of The Churn: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJexe6mtg7-NaM0 Adam: How has it been to spend so much time working inside Amos? Wes: Enormously creatively satisfying. Being able to spend five years and really working on doing the work and putting together in The Churn, is a novella that's based off Amous's childhood. That has always been the foundation that I worked off of and kind of created the character. And now that we're in the season five and we're actually physically going back to visit that, The Churn situation, his childhood to deal with demons from his past. I've done all this work and everything so it's almost a part of me now. It's like inside of me.

This is a good episode. The New Terra/Illus plotline is the one that interests me most. I get why Holden does what ProtoMiller wants him to do. He wants answers just as bad as the protomolecule does and he thinks he's helping his friend.

To be clear: the builders had total control over everything on that planet until they were wiped out about 1.5 billion years ago. Afterwards evolution did what it always does and created a whole new alien biome separate of what was before on top of the builder's ruins. Considering that on earth multi-celled organisms first occurred only about 500 million years ago, 1.5 billion years is a looong time. In theory Illus could have developed a totally new alien civilisation during all that time. So that is behind the mixing of 3 separate biomes now. And that must be also true for the other more than 1,300 systems behind the gates. Illus is the first one we get to know, and it seems like this one was pretty comprehensively altered by the builders, like a planet-sized machine of some kind. Just look at the perfect ring of moons, all more or less the same size. If that is not artificial, then what is?

This season is giving me some Mass Effect vibes, especially (the show in general feels like that had SOME influence). Anyone remember the Collectors and the swarms they used in ME1 and ME2? Remember the Reapers, and how they "repurposed" the species they "harvested"? I'm not saying the show or books are copying or anything, just that it has shades of that.

*_-Spoiler Free Comment!-_* As someone who’s read the book, I can see exactly when dude in the grey beanie is actively putting effort into staying quiet and not giving spoilers when he has answers to some of the questions and suppositions that the other normies have about what could be possibly going on... when he could easily explain things and answer questions that come up, but he commits to staying quiet. Bobbie's nephew cooking drugs for the "Martian mob" is straight out of the novella "Gods of Risk," which explains what happened after Bobbie went home after her adventures in the ring-space.

well in the books Bobie is not in Abaddon's gate .. so Gods of Risk is more between books 2 and 3.. since the TV show uses Bobie as a full Marine in season 3 .. they moved the events "one book" later and gives us more than just the Illus/New Terra story to tell in S4.. same as they seem to be advancing the Inaros plot from book 5 onward

I really hate what they did to Avasarala. In the books, she is a civil servant who knows how to wield power, she was never a politician that play lousy politics. By making her the latter in season 4, they made her look weak and out of character. Her in season 4 is precisely the type of people she hates to be. She never wanted to be in the front, she is the hand behind the throne. For one, she can't curse as much in front of the spot like, and she has to shovel more bullshit. Hence she was always comfortable just being Undersecretary. Some composite character was better then the book, but Avasarala got shortchanged.

This is quite late, but the storyline with David, Bobbie's nephew, cooking the drugs is from The Expanse novella "Gods at Risk." It's not in the main 8 novels. Interesting that they stuck it in the show. Chronologically, it takes place between novels 2 and 3, though they seem to have adjusted the timeline to fit where we are in the show now.

I haven't read the books but I don't think Bobby's story line in this season is completely unique to the show, I heard it was based on the plot a separate book that about her on Mars isn't a part of the 9 (currently 8) main books.

Miller with the hat on is proto molecule (Investigator)..Miller with the hat off is the original. Mars is fallen apart because of the Goldrush and Bobbies world is fallen apart.

Actually, Miller with the hat is still Miller in a way - he is essentially an AI construct of Miller personality just under control of the protomolecule, but has a certain degree of indepedence, which makes the main protomolecule node kill the Investigator each time he exceeds his boundary conditions like the time he wonders in the beginning about the taste of rain - to stop losing control over him entirely.
