I'm thinking back to the one time Naomi and Filip had a true heart-to-heart, she explained to him why she left, and told him: "Walking away is the only choice anyone ever has." You may think you have no choice, but you actually always have a choice. And this episode, when Filip finally saw the truth and made the same decision his mother did, Naomi's voice in the background said "Maybe you said the one thing they needed to hear". I think this moment really drives home the fact that, even though Naomi thought that she failed to save her son, in the end her words reached him, and in his darkest moment it was just enough to save his life. Absolutely beautiful writing.

Yeah the two lines between Naomi and Filip from S5 that I always thought really stood out were the "Walking Away" line and the line about "Marco not willing to die for Filip but willing to let Filip to die for him". It always felt like one of those two things would end up occurring, I just wasn't sure which. Glad it was the first option, and as you said the payoff to it was such fantastic writing.

I think that the nuke torpedo being manually disarmed is when Filip started to doubt in earnest. As the _Rocinante_ had them dead to rights and someone on their ship cared enough to save them (which I imagine Filip thinks it was Naomi). Later he finds out Marco lied to the people rigging the _Ceres_ docks to blow, telling them only Inners would be hurt. He manipulated the guy in the brig to kill his own brother. Then in this episode Marco doesn't give a shit when Rosenfield (who has done nothing but support and help him through this entire campaign, basically the closest thing to a ship wife) dies. As Holden says at the end, "You shouldn't believe what people say, you should watch what they do." One parent has seemingly demonstrated that they would sacrifice their desires to save him, and the other has demonstrated that no sacrifice is too great (including their child) to obtain what they desire.

Fun touch during Marco's demise: The angle seems super focused on letting us see Marco's face as he dies. And that's great. It works. ...but it's also an angle we've seen several times. He's looking at Filip's station. And, once we are shown what Filip did, we now know Marco saw Filip wasn't there anymore. At the moment of his death, Marco realizes his own son abandoned him. He's lost _everything._ And that is delicious comeuppance.

The major thing about the books, is that there's a 30 year time jump at this point in the story. Basically 30 years of normal, peaceful existence, until the next major event occurs. It just makes sense to end the series here. If the series is eventually picked back up, the time off between seasons 6 and 7 would actually makes sense in terms of the crew aging.
@danielrodrigues4903
@danielrodrigues4903 2 жыл бұрын
The thing though, is that the actors would move on IRL. It will be hard, if not impossible, to get them all back. They were already having problems getting actors to return between seasons (Havelock, Dawes, etc.).

@deadpolymers3416 2 жыл бұрын
@@danielrodrigues4903 But that's just it... the authors of the books adapted the story so that this would be a natural end to the series as far as Amazon is concerned. However both of the authors, the production company (who owns the IP rights) have been quoted, and most of the primary actors, have been quoted as saying there is more content on the drawing board. One of the 2 authors of the books said, "I would say wait and see. There's a lot of things happening that the fans don't know about and that we can't talk about", in reference to future content for The Expanse. There are a lot of rumors about the show, ranging from a Season 7 to spin-offs based in the 30 year window between the books. All we really know is that Amazon hasn't picked it up, and that the owner of the IP has said they plan on doing more with it... whatever that means.

With Clarissa only having 5 years left to live, I can see them reducing the length of the time skip if the show does return in some fashion. As long as it's long enough for the two kids to grow up as I believe they are main characters in later books, they can handwave any other off screen advancements.
@aaronia8092
@aaronia8092 2 жыл бұрын
@@DizRupTnz - That's a problem, in the books the rest of characters age a bit (not much because in their era 30 years would be as 15, aging wise, because of their medical advances), but the two kids don't age at all, because of their new status. That would be hard to do in the production, because these two actors are going to grow up really soon, and supposedly their characters don't have to change at all. I guess they could shorten the 30 years gap to 10 or so, but not less, because we need to get to a new situation when the colonies are already a bit developped. Clarissa might survive 10 years even if diagnosed to live only 5.

I'm definitely going to be checking out the Telltale game that's coming out. This series ended on a high note and they could do anything with this universe. I know in the beginning, the creators were trying to expand their RPG table top game to an MMO but the plan was too expensive so they wrote the books. I would dig the hell out of a "The Expanse" MMO if it expands on what the TV series managed to accomplish.
@Brswing
@Brswing 2 жыл бұрын
@@chaost4544 I'm actually kind of hoping they consider delving into animation. An Expanse MMO could be cool if they find the right developer/publisher combo, but with the way that videogames have been going I'm nervous if they go that route. But animation might allow for a way to truly bring the final three books to life and sidestep so many of the limitations brought on by live action. Imagine being able to have been able to delve into the specifics of the Battle at the Ring Gate at the end of Season 5. Being able to have seen what was happening on those ships, with all of the micrometeorite impacts and see just how much punishment the Donnager Class and 2 UNN Battleships took before blowing up. I would've loved to see a fully fleshed out, 10-15 minute battle not unlike what happened back in S1E4 CQB. Imagine being able to actually bring those scenes to life and have more options.

Honestly the way it happen in the book was so much better. Because it's more what young 'Holden' would do. The result is the same and it was view from the perspective of Michio Pa (which was the 'Drummer' of the book, the series Drummer is a combo of Drummer and Michio Pa). Earth and Mars was going to publicly crown Holden as the Head of the Union, and Holden straight up said no and tell them off publicly (that was always his defining quality), tell them what their problem is and then direct them to Michio Pa, unplanned. The show ending is more something old 'Holden' might do, because he eventually became more reserve in the way he does thing, but not by much, but he got quite good at getting what he want in less direct way in later years.

I think something that Eric doesn't understand about Filip. Yes the death of Rosenfeld is not as big a deal as say, the death of millions of Earthers or Belters being blown up at Ceres Station. But that doesn't matter. All of those other things are still weighing on Filip and the thing that finally breaks the metaphorical scale doesn't have to be worse than the previous moments. It just needs to add just enough weight for it to be too much for him to handle.

I think the moment that convinced him to leave was the realization that his father never truly loved him, but used him. I think it was Marco's answer to Filip's "what if it was me?". And Marco said "losing you would be like losing a part of *me"* (I'm paraphrasing). The realization was that his father only cared about himself. He *gave* all of this to Filip, he admits. Marco sees himself as the benefactor. And this entire war is only to please him, and only him. That's why he willingly sacrificed so many Belters, including the ones on Ceres. You don't have to like Filip, I think he did a lot of very bad stuff, but he is a very complex and fascinating character. And it was good to see at the end that he made it out of the ship.

Except- Something was wrong with his monitor. He thought at first that the image had gotten grainy, the resolution rougher, but that wasn’t right. It was the same size, only he could see the parts that made it up. He wasn’t looking at the Rocinante. He was looking at photons streaming off a sheet of electrically excited plastic. The polymer chains glowed dark and light and dark. It was like seeing a woman’s body in painting across the room and then, without warning, only the brushstrokes that made it up. Naomi was nowhere in it. He shouted, and could sense the pressure waves going out from his throat. The clouds of molecules that made his fingers slapped against the ones that were the control pad. He meant to type that they should fire, that they should kill while the chance was still with them, but he couldn’t make out the letters in the splash of photons that spilled off his screen. There was too much detail. Where the air began and the crash couch ended was lost. The boundary between his body and his environment blurred. He had known since he was too young to remember learning that atoms were made from more space than material, and that at the lowest levels, the things that made atoms could bounce in and out of being. He’d never seen it before. He’d never been so aware that he was a vapor of energy. A vibration in a guitar string that didn’t exist. Something dark and sudden moved through the cloud toward him.'

The way Holden gave way to Drummer is very symbolic of systematic change - he chose to de-center himself despite his privilege allowing him to take space, and allowed the prior marginalized group an actual voice for the first time. Sometimes that's all it takes, and it's awesome.

33:38 I disagree, the books and even the show have been really good about giving us scenes like the dinner all throughout. Quiet, character driven dialog scenes as Holden is in the cafeteria getting coffee. Constantly the crew would sit for meals, like when new characters were introduced to the crew on the Roci (Miller, Avasarala, Bobbie, Monica, Prax). Sure baked into the finale scenes was a bit more closure but those scenes still happened throughout each season. Especially in finales.

Bobby Bobbies in the most epically badass Bobby way anyone could ever Bobby. 3. Naomi Nagata is a muthafukking badass and, of all the Roci crew - more than Holden, more than Amos, more than Bobby - Nagata is the one you most do NOT ever want to have pissed off at you. 4. And Amos ... Amos is more Amos than anyone could ever have imagined.

Filip Inaros isn't even 18 at this point. Filip did not care about the Earthers who died because he saw them as "less than human." It took his mother to cause him to see others as important. And with Rosenfeld's death, Filip hearkened back to what Naomi said about "He'll let you die for him but he won't die for you." And Filip actually left at the end of the Fifth book, Nemesis Games. Of course, Marco Inaros was killed then as well.

I would recommend reading the novella Strange Dogs. The whole Laconia plot this season with Cara and her brother isn't from the main line of books. For me this show was really special. I started reading science fiction when I was 12 years old in 1953, quickly discovered Robert Heinlein, from those YA novels that lead to a universe of literature and a genre I only knew of by way of Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon. I quickly discovered the genre had evolved so the top end was for adults! I ran out of young adult and quickly discovered the SF John Campbell had evolved in the 1940s with Heinlein, Asimov, de Camp, Sturgeon, Blish, Anderson, Bester, Brown ... it's a long list.... so by the mid 1950s I was quite aware of sophisticated adult space opera with a lived in verisimilitude. At the same time I became quite interested on movies and that golden age of TV in the 1950s. There was indeed some good SF in the 1950s , most of not space opera, except for the anonymous movie Forbidden Planet , which was great compared to Tom Corbett and Space Patrol the juvie stuff on TV , tho not the domesticated space opera Heinlein and Asimov. Took 10 years from Forbidden Planet to Star Trek to get adult space opera again (still a mystery)....we SF fans were quite pleased with Star Trek is was a good approximation to the prose form we knew, tho at the bottom I was never completely satisfied. Got a few non space opera films, the astounding Big Thinks SF with 2001: A Space Odyssey and the 'urban' SF of Blade Runner in 1982. Boy what a prologue! After reading SF for 40 years I just have trailed off so did not read The Expanse books (yet). When this show came along, my old time SF friends said, got catch it , it's not Star Trek, or Firefly or BSG.... it's the real thing! Sure nuf! This is the first real dirt-under-the-finger-nails lived SF space opera I have ever seen on TV! Frankly I am surprised SyFy even produced 3 years of this show it is not the kind of visual SF narrative I would have thought they would have touched. I hope this show has influence. Lately we have had an excellent version of (half of) Dune and after Villeneuve finishes thee 2nd half he is doing Rendezvous with Rama. There is a ton of SF prose source material that has never been touched going back to the 1940

Book Filip is a little clearer because of a couple of changes made in the adaptation. In the books, Filip still leads the team that gets the stealth composites, but it was from shipyard on Callisto not Mars, which was a shared station and his destruction of the Mars yard did a huge amount of collateral damage. After the failed interception of the Rocinante, the Free Navy actually use Callisto to repair and Filip gets to see the results of his actions up close and personal. That on top of the dressing down he got for his Father's mistake was enough for him to deliberately miss going back to the ship.

I am lost. I have that feeling I get after I binge watch a show where I don't know what to do with myself. The same feeling I had after I binged the whole of Leviathan Falls on the day it came out. I might do an entire rewatch.

12:42 F**k yeah we will. Closer, closer, closer to the Station All in the valley of Death Flew the Thirty “Forward! Charge for the guns!” he said. Into the valley of Death Flew the Thirty. Railgun to right of them, Railgun to left of them, Railgun in front of them Volleyed and thundered; Stormed at with shot and shell, Boldly they flew and well, Into the jaws of Death, Into the mouth of hell Flew the Thirty. When can their glory fade? O the wild charge they made! All humanity wondered. Honour the charge they made! Honour the Immortal, Noble Thirty!!

Rumor has it that if you look up the word "Loyalty" in the Encyclopedia Galactica you will find Camina Drummer's face.

I agree with Eric that we don't have to like Filip's character, but I feel that he's only looking for one moment when Filip chooses to leave Marco, whereas it was a gradual buildup towards this decision as the others said. He also mentioned that killing millions should should have made a rational mind leave, but just look at for example Nazi Germany, the population supported an evil government and encouraged atrocities, but at the same time that doesn't mean that all the people are inherently evil because they have indoctrinated by propaganda their whole life. Granted, this is not the best comparison, but this is a fictional story.

"Or we could jump into the books" - Do it. Do it, do it, DO IT! The books are great and unique in their own ways (the writers made quite a few changes when adapting them to the show - some for the best). Also the last three books of the nine (last of which was released two months ago) are great and help tolerate the wait until we have seasons 7-9 (or, alternatively, until we have six seasons and a movie trilogy).

I think watching through it the first time, you don't really notice the nuances in Jasai's performance as Filip so you kinda take what you see. But rewatching it, at least for me, you actually see his inner conflict if you remember everything Naomi told Filip when she was on the Pella. Then you start to understand his slow transformation leading up to the final decision to walk away. A lot of people think that scene where he calls Camina the enemy was him trying to live up to his father, but rewatching it, it felt more like his guilt was getting to him and him starting to realize all the deaths he caused was not for some righteous cause but rather to serve his dad. Him being upset was more like him trying to convince himself that what he's still going with is somehow right when he knows it isn't.

The object in orbit at Laconia that Duarte has Cortezar working on is a shipyard. Which is a BFD.

Great finale made it seem that several characters were going to have their epic heroic deaths long before they do in the books.

Anyone else laugh in Vegeta when Duarte told Marcos he's done with him? I want to see more of Admiral Duarte's story.
