Fun fact Wes Chatham was in the military for a number of years so he definitely brings some of that into his role, on top of having been a rebellious youth. Props to the casting director for having picked the right actor for this role.

Yeah he served on the USS Essex In fire control I think. This is where he met Denzel Washington I believe and the rest is history. But yes I turned out to be a great cast. In the end it came down to 2 people - Wes and Elias Toufexis and Amos was the only guy who didn't overact the tough guy routine. Well that's how I remember Ty Franck recall it. Cheers for the comment.

@@GraemeGunn In fairness, being involved in damage control on ships alters how you look at some things, and at what constitutes danger. I was not in a combat arms job but once you've been in a submarine on fire several hundred feet underwater, you don't freak out as easily. He totally brings that kind of air to the role. True & thats why Miller is just as bad-ass as Amos. He knew he was lined up to get smashed about but he still did what he had to do to honour his dead buddy Semi. Who has the balls to challenge the Lion that just Ate your friend knowing that the lion is most likely going to eat you too? I get why people love Amos's character, i really dig it too but that dont mean i cant see just how equally brilliant Millers character is as well. The guy has a great Moral compass even though he's a world weary ex-cop. Thats whats great about this show, so many great characters, dont even get me started on Bobby Draper. She Damn near perfect.

I've been in a fight like that. Where I knew I was going to lose. But the man I fought, I've known for too long. I love him too much. He'd have lost respect for me if I'd backed down. So I hit him, he kicked the shit out of me, broke a couple of my ribs. I was laid out for weeks. We're still really close friends. I hate violence, but it is important to be capable of it. I love how Miller knows he can't win this fight. So he uses a misdirect to try and stun Amos. It works and he gets a free shot. But when you clock a guy in the face while he's off-guard and he takes one step back, then hits you so hard it takes you 20 seconds to get up? Don't keep that fight going. Miller literally just keeps on going because he's angry at himself that he didn't get Julie out. That his friend didn't make it. That hundreds of thousands of people died and he couldn't save them. This scene is mirrored by Amos in season 5 (SPOILER ALERT) Amos starts that fight in the showers because he wants to work through some stuff and the only way he knows how to do that is to fight. So he finds a group who have it coming, taunts them and then walks straight into the ambush because like Miller he needs to work through some stuff and he doesn't know how else to. Miller is powerless to change what happens, so he picks a fight he can't win like a masochist. He's a saint of lost causes like Julie. Like Star Helix. Like Ceres. Amos is emotionally stunted an only knows how to live a good life by following Holden and Niaomi because he knows they're moral and trusts them not to lead him astray. But without them, while grieving, he does the next best thing. Look for a gang that he recognizes the MO of from his time in Baltimore and then goes to town.

This was a good comment yet something you said got me thinking. Amos is portrayed as emotionally and socially disconnected. He is just as likely to kill you as leave you alone. But if he only knows how to live a good life by recognizing the good moral judgment of Holden and Niaomi, than why isn't he able to apply that judgment to himself? Basically if he can recognize this "goodness" in others, shouldn't he be able to apply that to his own decision making process and recognize the good reaction should be X? Humans are weird and mental conditions/variations in behavior are unlimited but this logical twist seems a bit forced. It is fiction but there are people like Amos in the disconnected sense, but do they also have this drive to be good, they just are unable to, and rely on others to guide them? Is this a true human condition or convenient character plotting? I'm curious. Perhaps the books do a better job of balancing the idea of Amos as a character?

OP is dead on. Except Amos was pretty sure he was going to win that fight against the Belters. A couple of low G born belters against an Earth born gangland brute? They shoulda brought more guys. The thing about him being as likely to kill you as leave you alone isn't accurate though. If Amos had no business with you and you didn't give him a reason, you'd have no trouble.

@@sterlingmullett6942I think part of it is Amos never got to develop higher morals. Consequential thoughts. He was a thug and an engineer. Both have similar parameters. Systems have problems. Problems require solving. Nuances of human emotion and motivation didn't really make sense to him. He understood what they were and how people responded, which is why he decided to trust Naomi and Holden. But he accepted that he didn't know the why. Because to him, a problem just needs solving.

One interesting thing about Amos is that when he goes into kill mode, he kind of zones out. You see it in the fight against that group of belters on the shuttle. Once the fight starts, it's only flashes of what happened and then the fight is over. Here, when he gets Miller by the neck and Naomi tried to stop you, he doesn't look like he's in a rage. He looks vacant. You can clearly see it when Naomi brings him back to his senses and he backs off. The way he blinks as his eyes focus as his higher functions kick back in. That is terrifying. It's almost like being a berserker, he's largely beyond words. Except that he isn't mindless. He's pitiless but not stupid.

Same thing happens when him and Alex fight. Alex is just standing in Amos's way and not letting him leave, and Alex has to basically yell at Amos in an attempt to get through to him, while trying to not die. I once heard from someone that soldiers who've served in active combat often have difficulty distinguishing grades of threat. That for some soldiers they classify everything as "threat" and "not threat." And once they've classified something definitively as "threat," they have difficulty holding back because on the battlefield hesitation gets you killed. This occasionally leads to situations where a soldier uses what we would consider to be excessive force in a non-combat situation because their switch has been flipped. Amos at 2:15 put me in mind of that. In this moment he didn't see Miller as just another guy trying to get things out in a fistfight. He saw Miller as a "threat" because that's what his training had taught him, and he acted in accordance to that training

I saw the series first and absolutely adored it now I'm reading the books so I went back to the first season to start watching again to see what they changed. Watching this scene my rational brain can't help but say "That didn't happen in the book." But the rest of me is like "Fuck yeah that was awesome!" I noticed they manufactured more conflict between Amos and Holden in my first season and made Miller more of a dick in the beginning...but with the actors playing the characters I don't mind too much. Wes does a freaking amazing job as Amos! That look in his eyes, just wow.

I love how black and white amos sees everything. He makes perfect sense. Miller had to defend his friend’s honour even though he knew he’d take a beating. Once that was out of the way they paved over it and became friends.

By a sheer effort of will, Amos has opened his heart to a woman he trusts, and he obeys her. Also, he gives loyalty to the crew and captain. He has done these things against his nature, because his brain tells him they are his only hope. He is a sociopath who has learned to govern himself by specific external contacts. I admire him. But he is fearsome!

Amos is such an interesting character. You're really intrigued with his values and tmhis thought process. It's like the guy has not emotions, but he actually does, and operate like he's a coputer program. I do miss this show.

That was a great scene. ALSO, great suggestion by KZbin, because I remember it so well, and wanted to see it again. I guess KZbin reads minds these days, eh? Miller was a "hot cop" and always bashing people around, many times without provocation. I'll bet Amos saw too many cops like him, when he was growing up.

It was principle for Miller and family for Amos. Miller got a lot of cred from Amos for that and when he said he was going down with the assault and the reason is really as good as you can ever have for walking into danger, "Someone has to keep them from killing each other", because of all the different factions in the OPA.

No, at this point it was more a "it's right if Naomi says it's right" school of philosophy. Amos doesn't subscribe to might makes right at all, he's not a bully, and he's not particularly concerned with "right" in this scene and he knows it, he stops threats to his crew, that's all. And he doesn't really know what's right or wrong, other than only vaguely. Which is why he latches onto Naomi to guide his moral compass.
