It’ll be great to see how you think it develops! Even though it’s ended up probably my favorite show period, I’d actually agree with the 7/10 for the first episode. It’s good, and well done, but the story and characters take some time to hit their stride. It’s such a huge and deep world that it takes a few episodes to show the setting, but I think it’s a rare show that actually gets better with almost every season. And you don’t have to worry about the last season pulling a GoT, I’m not sure it’s my favorite of the seasons but it’s still a great and pretty satisfying one.

@@RocketSurgn_ Agreed. The reason you don’t have to worry about this show pulling a GoT is because with the Expanse, all of the books have already been written. Unfortunately we may never see the final GoT books. Having the GoT show runners go from adapting the story to actually writing the story was a big ask.

No hyperdrives, my guys. That's like the core of this universe, that it takes forever to get from place to place. No synthetic gravity or anything either, constant thrust is what keeps gravity on a ship

The “hyperdrive” moment was what they call a “flip and burn.” They’re moving fast towards their destination in a big heavy ship, so to stop or go back they have to flip the ship around and burn harder in the other direction, which puts lots of pressure (“Gs,” standing for how much gravity it feels like, with Earth gravity being “1G”) on the humans inside.
@AnotherScribbler
@AnotherScribbler 2 жыл бұрын
Worth noting: The move that the Captain of the ship that got blown up was ordering, to try and escape, was a “30g” maneuver. In our current reality, fighter pilots wear special suits to let them handle up to 8 or 9 Gs more safely, and stunt pilots can pull up to 10Gs on some maneuvers, but it’s still fairly impressive if someone can handle 6 while staying fully conscious. The highest recorded vertical (as in, the pressure pushing down on you from above your head instead of pushing you back in your seat) Gs that anyone has survived is around 31. A guy in a rocket sled experiment hit 46Gs but suffered permanent damage to his vision. Prolonged exposure to 15Gs can do enough damage to kill you. So that says that the equipment and “juice” that they have in the world of The Expanse is doing a lot of work. Also that they were desperate enough that they were going to try a maneuver that could have killed or injured a bunch of people on the ship.

No brakes in space. You have to accelerate in the opposite direction to cancel out your velocity.
@thomashiggins9320
@thomashiggins9320 2 жыл бұрын
@@Awol991 Yep, and even then, the ship didn't stop, completely. It just slowed down enough that it was traveling at about the same speed as the ship that sent the distress message. That meant the shuttle could travel over to that ship. So, the Canterbury and the other ship were moving slowly, relative to *each other* but still fast relative to everything else. As for the Canterbury, it had probably spent days running its engine, for the long haul back to Ceres, with a heavy load of ice. So, to slow down and match speeds with the other ship, the "Cant" had to flip around and blast the engines *hard*, and that made it feel as if the crew were being slammed down toward the deck. So, yeah, that means the decks of the ship are arranged like the floors in a skyscraper, and not like the decks of a cruise ship. When the engine lights up, it's like going up in an elevator. You feel "heavier," until the elevator gets up to speed, because the floor gets pushed up against the bottom of your feet. When the elevator slows down, you feel lighter, for a second -- and also, when the elevator starts to drop. When the acceleration of the ship stops, it feels like you're falling, and you can float around. The science in this show isn't perfect, but it's *damn* good. 😃

It's right up there with Black Sails, The Sopranos, Season 1-4 of GOT, Breaking Bad, The Simpsons. And no wonder: the authors of the books helped write the show, and they knew how to adapt a story for the screen. S1 has a lot to take in, but stick with it and OMG you guys will FALL IN LOVE. It's a slow burn but it is SO WORTH IT!! I guarantee from S2 on you will be obsessed. This is coming from someone who has not read the books and sci-fi is not my favorite genre. In fact, if it wouldn't spoil the whole series (of course), I'd tell you guys to watch the finale and then the whole series backwards. It should be taught in film schools in a course called How To Write A Tv Series Finale. What an epic. I laughed, I cried, and one sequence I actually leaped out of my chair and cheered. And the ending is so DARNED WORTH IT. The perfect ending imo, though I know it could go on longer. But you have to get through the rest of the series first. I won't spoil! Sorry about the gushing. A little info about the scene you thought was going to be hyper drive. There is no hyperdrive or warp speed or space shields or space brakes. Everything is based off real science. When traveling through space under thrust you have trust gravity. When engines are off you use mag boots. In order to slow down they cut off the engines use thruster to flip the direction and refire the engines to slow down, it's called " Flip and burn!" Which causes massive G forces. The white stuff in the tube is called juice and itsfor people to withstand the G forces.
@PsychoMuffinSDM
@PsychoMuffinSDM 2 жыл бұрын
Technically, the flip and burn does not need to be massive. A lot of them (especially since so many are belters) do runs moseying about at a nice 1/3g. You spend half your trip accelerating, and the other half slowing down. It saves on a lot of reaction mass, while keeping some gravity (because it actually is easier logistically to do a lot of activities). And despite the slow acceleration, it can really add up.

@@PsychoMuffinSDM I think I understand most of what you're saying but you may have misunderstood what I was trying to convey in my comment that this flip and burn was to come to a slow as fast as possible to go and checkout the distress call. That's what I was trying to interpret.

I'm excited to see y'all get into this series. It just ended for me as the last season just finished airing earlier this month. I'm ready to dive back in from the beginning with y'all. Just FYI...there is no hyper-speed or FTL (Faster Than Light) travel for these spaceships. This series was built around the idea of using relatively realistic science for the humans that have colonized the solar system. So when the ship completed the Flip and Burn then took off, it was going incredibly fast but still within a realistic speed. 1 g-force speed is about 22 miles per hour. In real life, most humans can take about 9 g's for a very, VERY short time (like, think seconds) before dying. Depending on age, physical health, etc., we can take a sustained acceleration of 2-5 g's for a longer time. (For context, commercial airplane flights typically go to 1.3 g's without us feeling the difference when traveling even for hours and hours. NASCAR drivers can experience up to 3 g's during highspeed turns. Stunt airplane pilots usually do short stunt maneuvers in 4-5 g's.) In the Expanse world, they use that white juice and specially designed chairs (called crash couches) to help sustain high G-force speeds to get around the solar system. This allows humans in the Expanse to go maybe twice as fast as is humanly possible now. So they can go maybe 30 g's for a few seconds, 15-20 G's for very short amounts of time, and do a sustained acceleration of maybe 5-9 g's with proper training. So while the ship didn't look like it was going fast because it's in space, it actually was when compared to our time.

It seems like they aren't going very fast is due to two reasons. Large objects appear to travel slow from far away, and to stop they have to provide equal thrust in the opposite direction they are headed so to go very fast they'd have to burn retrograde for a long time or burn hard which can cause internal injury.
@ravenna6543

@UC3L1egwNSp2g9oNnnr8dWSQ Lithobraking is the means of slowing a vehicle by basically crashing. For example, the Mars Pathfinder mission to land a rover on mars used a bubble shield so that the rover could essentially crash into the surface without blowing up. For rockets or other space vehicles, Prograde is in the direction that the vehicle is moving. Retrograde is in the opposite direction.

Damn, I'm happy I susbcribed earlier today when I found y'all through Vox Machina reactions, lol. I'm sure other people will explain it as well, but The Expanse is a very grounded Sci-Fi show, no hyper/warpdrives, no artificial gravity generators, no force shields, etc. The Ships are designed like buildings, with all the floors pointed down towards the thrusters, so as the ship is accelerating at the rate of earth gravity (9.8m/s^2), it pushes up on the objects inside, creating the sensation of gravity. In order to go from point A to point B, they plot a trajectory that will intercept with their destination, accelerate 50% of the way there, then flip the ship around and decelerate the rest of the way to match the velocity of their destination. It's like when you accelerate in a car, you get pressed against the seat, but when you hit the brakes and decelerate, you get pressed into the seatbelt. For this reason, the ships are limited to only accelerate at a rate that humans can survive, so they typically operate between 0 Grav and 1 G. Torpedoes don't carry humans, so they can go as fast as the booster lets them. Because of how vast space is, this does give the impression that the ships move incredibly slowly, but for reference they are speeding up at the same rate that an object falls on earth, except when doing evasive maneuvers. Then, they'll move much faster, but only for brief periods. For example, the Canterberry's captain ordered the pilot to hit 30Gs to try to evade the incoming torpedoes. Conversely, space stations that can't accelerate like a ship use the centripetal force to mimic gravity. This basically consists of spinning the entire asteroid the space station is built into in order to accelerate objects away from the center of spin, into the interior side of the surface. Because the effect is weaker the closer you get to the center of spin, these types of stations typically only get around 1/3G, which is why Belters develop bones with much less density and less strength than someone who grows up in Earth's constant 1G gravity.

Belters are born and live in lower or zero gravity. The body cannot take a full earth gravity. The Martians, later in the show, have a similar problem. Not as bad, but same issue. On the flip side, Earthers are crap at moving in zero G. Belters are awesome at moving in low gravity. You’ll see a lot of scenes where everyone is wearing magnetic boots to avoid floating around. This show, especially at the beginning, forces the viewer to pay attention. Lots of details that are important later. Have fun!

Glad to see you on this series. This is the best hard science fiction that's ever been on television. This story was originally an RPG, then became a popular novel series. The original creators of the game and the novels are also writers for the series, so they know their entire story very, very well, beginning to end, all six seasons. Because they know their story so well, they have planted clues through every episode pointing to future events. There are clues everywhere. There is no fluff. You have to listen to all the dialog, watch the backgrounds. Even freeze and read the computers screens in the background. They don't hold your hand, and they don't tell you twice. If you don't pay attention, you'll miss it. They spend time building the world in the first three episodes, then the action explodes in episode 4. Ships use reaction drives like rockets today, but they have a modern twist. The ships are generally under power the entire trip, with the nose pointed toward the destination half way, then they flip the ship around and use the main rocket to slow them down the rest of the way. That's how it has to be done in the real world. When the ship is under power (engine on), they have "thrust gravity." When the engine is off, they go weightless and have to use their magnetic boots to walk. Don't be surprised if you're not really attached to the characters yet. You get attached as you learn more about them.

The best way to explain the level of technology in The Expanse is that it is the expansionary period of humanity into the solar system. The equivalent of the period of human history where we were only using boats to cross the ocean. It is still taking them weeks to travel from one destination to another due to lack of hyperdrive. The lack of artificial gravity is explained by their ships being laid out like office buildings where the basement is closest to the engines and the roof is the front as opposed to cruise liners where the decks run along the ship. This allows them at a constant 1G acceleration to simulate 1G of gravity, though that's a double edged sword as you see in the flip and burn where they have to alter course and decelerate they get subjected to intense Gs. But to put it as simply as possible its that level of technology that sits somewhere in the middle of the bridge that bridges current day tech with hard Scifi like Mass Effect or Star Trek.

See a new channel taking The Expanse journey (so many more channels need to) so I instantly subscribe! Whatever you do do NOT give up or think you have The Expanse down in the first few episodes. It's a BIG world build at first and then strap onto your belt because it takes off in a way you are NOT going to be ready for!

Welcome to this show fellas; I started watching this show in 2015 and watched the last episode (sadly) a couple weeks ago. This show is literally the best science fiction of the century so far, nothing comes close except maybe BSG. It's noy the GOT of science fiction but the lord of the rings of science fiction. If you stick with it, I guarantee a great ride.

This is the only show I've ever seen that has a 36 episode arc with nonstop escalation, where each episode is crazier than the other exponentially, best sci fi show in like 30 years.

Oh my Gooooddd. Y’all are watching my fave show of all time and the best sci-fi show ever. 😃 Just know that this show is based on real science (or what real science could evolve into), so I wouldn’t expect to see some of the more unrealistic space stuff you see in like a Star Trek or something. But the space battles on this show are top tier and a game changer. I love how you guys already love Bucky Jr (AKA Amos). He is a lot of ppl’s fave. And, what girl are you talking about/looking for? Holden’s fxck buddy (the blonde girl) or Naomi (the Black girl)? Btw, most ppl fall in love with this show after EPISODE 4. I was in by episode 1, but you’ll be fully on board by episode 4, for sure. Just try to pay attention to the world building. It’s a lot, but it’s all important later. And, it’s wayyy better than Wheel of Time will probably ever be. Lol. And… finally…. REMEMBER THE CANT. ❤️❤️

Hey, welcome to The Expanse and its loyal fan base! You were wondering about the floaty way that the bird was flying near the little girl... it's because Ceres (the asteroid that Miller lives inside) has been artificially spun up to give the people who live there the illusion of gravity. They settled on 1/3 of Earth gravity (1/3 'G' in the show), which is about twice what you would feel on the surface of the Moon. The show puts a lot of effort into making the reality of the show at least scientifically plausible. Of course, there are concessions due to budget limitations. For example, Belters are all supposed to be 7 feet tall and skinny. But they could not find that many actors who look that way, so they have some examples to give you a feel for the situation, and the rest of the actors are just regular people. Similarly, things should act as if in 1/3 G all over Ceres, and on most civilian ships, but they mostly just do something special (like the bird) once in a while to remind you what the gravity is like. You already saw that Belters have a hard time on Earth because of the gravity. Imagine being hung up on hooks if you weighed 3 times what you normally do. Martians are used to 40% of Earth's gravity, as that's what you feel on Mars. Again, welcome to the show, and don't sweat if things are a little confusing at first, just keep your eyes and ears open, and the show (and the fans) will help you get comfortable with the characters, and all the new environments that people call home outside of Earth. Finally, this is possibly my all time favourite series to watch. It's a wild ride, and the folks who created this show hit on ALL CYLINDERS. The overall plot, writing, casting, acting, set design, lighting, damn near everything is off the charts when compared to most stuff you see on the tube. I really hope you like it!

Wuuuuuuut?! The Expanse! Yes. I’m here for it. This series is dope, and plenty of seasons. Can’t wait for the new nicknames for the characters. Thanks y’all. 👊🏽 Basic info: It’s the future people are born on Earth, people are born on Mars, and people (Belters) are born on out on the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. The Belters don’t have very much water, but they mine the asteroids. To be born on Earth is very privileged. Boats and ships measure distance in klicks which is kilometers. There is a lot of boat/ship talk in space shows. Rankings on ships too. Think the Navy but in space.

The show's actually one of the more accurate portrayal's of space for the most part. No hyperdrives in this unfortunately haha, when they did the flip they re just going very very fast in one direction so you have to flip around and burn the other way putting a bunch of stress on your body

This show is hard sci fi. Based on realistic science. No hyperdrives, no magic artificial gravity, no shields or Lazer beams, just hard physics. Space is an enemy in this show, trying to kill you the second you slip up, just like it would on real life... If you're continuing to watch this show, throw out all the typical Hollywood sci fi tropes, because 90% of them are wrong and bad science. This show does a great job of portraying what life in space would probably really be like in a 100 or 200 years... And even in story telling, this show doesn't use the typical Hollywood tropes either. Don't expect magical last minute escapes or such. That ship, the Canterbury? They're dead in a fiery nuclear explosion. No one survives that. One of the best sci fi shows in a long time. Best since battle star Galactica imo...

Clicks is a slang term for Kilometres. LADAR is radar, but uses lasers instead of Radio waves. There is a lot of world building in the first couple of episodes. You are meant to feel a bit lost at this stage, but the asnwers do come

Welcome to the World of The Expanse, brothers. You won't regret this ride. Y'all definitely got a new sub for this one! It's actually based on *nine* novels, *five* novellas, and *three* short stories. The Expanse is a Master Class in book to screen adaptation. The co-authors of the books, Ty Frank and Daniel Abrahams, also served as head writers for the show and say the series is the final draft of the story. While is may be the "final draft", the books are still *WELL* worth the read. Even if you don't choose to read the entire series, you should at least read the short novella entitled "The Churn". It gives you the backstory of Amos Burton, arguably one of the best sci-fi characters ever written...in one of the best sci-fistories ever written. ..imho. In case no one has filled you in yet, a "click" is slang for a kilometer. No "hyperdrives" in The Expanse, bro. Hyperdrives are magical creations, for science-fantasy. The human body can only take so much pressure during any acceleration. Science fantasy shows that use hyperdrives also always have some sort of magical force field protecting humans from the sure death experience of that kind of acceleration. The Expanse is science fiction with an emphasis on the *science* , and based solidly on realism. (I think when he said, "They nuked her." He was referring to The Canterbury, the ship. But when he said, "She's gone." He was talking about the girl, Ade.)

"clicks" is short for Kilometre, so 50,000 clicks is 50,000 kilometres. LADAR is just RADAR. Ladar uses light waves, where Radar uses radio waves. This show will have you on the edge of your seat in one moment, and in tears in the next. I shall give you a bit of a warning: this show is a master at the cliffhanger. Some cliffhangers are brutal. Just so you know, all questions you have will get answered...eventually.

Oh, cool! You guys are starting the Expanse?! I've been meaning to watch it so maybe I'll watch along with you guys. I'll come back and watch the video after I watch the 1st episode myself. I've read a bit of the book and it has a mystery going on and the parts with the Detective character feels very film noir/mystery so when you mentioned the saturation/color of the scene felt black and white film-like it was probably on purpose. they were probably purposely making it feel like a black n white film noir movie. Also watched the 1st episode as well now and it was good.

Yes yes yes! The Expanse! Flip and Burn. The Canterbury (mothership) was traveling EXTREMELY fast (60,000 kph at a guess) and were trying to slow to a relatively quick stop. Accelerating in the opposite direction to "put on the brakes". It would be extremely punishing, I think they said something like 5 x earth's gravity (5G).

I totally agree that the first few episodes of this show is really slow, I've had trouble getting friends into it actually. It eventually becomes this personal story about found family, but it takes a bit to establish the setting and these first episodes don't hit as close to home in my opinion.
