Both. Overmatched and Underestimated. Mars is the most advanced in terms of military and the Donnager is the flagship of their Jupiter fleet. The Donnager class ships are the biggest and most heavily armed warships that the MCRN has fielded to date. They originally assumed 1 incoming ship, probably a Belter. Some Belter ships are armed but nothing that could even take out a smaller MCRN ship like the one the crew just escaped in, the Tachi. Even when it became clear that there were six ships, the Donnager would still have been HEAVY favorites against six Belter ships. Whoever attacked them knew what they were doing and were armed with state of the art stealth tech destroyers armed with advanced torpedoes and rail guns. By underestimating the enemy, the Donny wasn't at full battle readiness. Otherwise they would have the entire crew in Vac suits and the oxygen inside the ship would have been vented into storage tanks to prevent evacuation of air in the event of a rail gun hit. Unfortunately they took multiple rail gun hits which created vacuum in many compartments and killed most of the crew without suits on. Only 2 of the attacking ships survived the initial asault. They still had enough troops to board the Donnager and try to take the ship. Normally the Marines on board would have been able to hold them off if they were 100% prepared for a boarding action but again, nobody expected the enemy to get past even the initial torpedo barrage. Captain Yao followed standard MCRN protocol and scuttled the ship to prevent an enemy from gaining control over the ship or compromising MCRN code books/operational orders.

100% agree. Some writers of sci-fi just throw out the rulebook when it comes to the laws of physics as they assume it will free them up to tell any kind of story they want. The problem is that then, they sometimes have to create these arbitrary new rules and limits to create dramatic tension. This can work when done well, but absolutely the worst cases of it being used is "shielding" technology in series like star wars or star trek because the rules about how long the shields last or how they work are so deliberately vague that there's no tension in whether they will last long enough or break because the viewer/reader has no understanding of how they operate and the writer is just going to arbitrarily decide whether the shields hold or not or how well they hold according to what the story requires.

Popular science fiction has become stupid. Star Trek and other franchises have all kinds of gadgets that make space feel like a journey on an ocean. A lot of technobabble to realise the dream of travelling between stars without all the struggles of being in space. The problem with that is that you have to create more technobabble to create drama. Of course the magic energy shields had to fail in a crucial moment. Of course the inertia dampeners didn't work when the crew needed them. Of course the transporter had to malfunction because the plot required it. But by treating space as what it is you get the same and even better drama without the help of plot devices. When one hole in the tin can that you call a space ship is enough to create a life or death situation, you don't have to add hundreds of ships to your CGI space battles to increase the drama. Not to mention that all of that is more understable and plausible to the audience. A hole in the hull of space ship is a lot of 'Uh-Oh!'. No further explanation needed. But why exactly did these energy shields fail again when you needed them most? Oh, because disturbances in the impulse transwarp field coil behaved abnormally. Got it ... I think. Yay, drama!

I think you people are reading too much into it just to feel superior. This is the only sci-fi show that i can think of that managed to made realism look cool, and that is only because of the setting where everything is pretty much realistic.

One of the things a lot of people like about The Expanse is the hard science, no artificial gravity, the effect of G forces on bodies, gravity assisted sling shot racing. There's an excellent example in this episode that sometimes make people wonder what is going on. So when Holden and Naomi are running across the bridge and the engines go out they lose the thrust gravity from the engine thrust and start drifting off the bridge. Holden attaches a tether to Naomi, does a half somersault and kicks her away from him. This also has the effect of pushing him back towards the bridge where he can active his magnetic boots to anchor him in place and pull Naomi back. This is a great example of Newton's 3rd law of motion "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction".

So I think the slingshot guy is trying to “slingshot” around planets to beat other people’s records. Slingshotting is using a planets gravity to accelerate at a high speed without the need for fuel or artificial propulsion (you can turn off your engines when slingshotting). So the scene seems to be a sports betting club of some kind, betting to see if pilots can beat other pilots scores by slingshotting. It seems he got too close to the planet’s atmosphere and burned up because of it

The ships have mainly 3 types of weapons: torpedoes (self explanatory), PDCs (point defense cannons) and railguns. Railguns typically require bigger ships like battleships. The martian sailor was surprised to find them on the relatively small attacking crafts, which were some sort of light frigates. Railguns shoot metal slugs at extremely high velocitys via electromagnetic accelleration. There is no defense against railguns except trying not to get hit by fast evasive manouvers at a distance. Or just enough redundancy on board to survive multiple hits. PDCs are just really advanced and powerful but conventional gatling guns, designed to destroy incoming torpedoes. You can sure wreak havoc with them at short distances, like they did inside the hangar of the Donnager, but that is usually not their purpose. For an enemy to get that close in regular space combat and PDCs to be useful something must have gone very wrong beforehand most of the time.

The railgun round would've punctured several walls ( you can see some of them when Naomi looks out ), so the kinetic energy blasts would've gotten successively smaller with each penetration. The walls themselves could be specially lined to absorb heat & minimize secondary blast effects.

Fun fact: The Expanse is based on a book series by James S.A. Corey, which is the pen name for two guys called Ty Franks and Daniels Abraham. Ty Frank came up with the world of The Expanse when he was working on a MMORPG, which unfortunately never got made. He then tried to use it as the basis for a Pen & Paper RPG, which he tried out with a group of friends (among whom Daniel Abraham, who was the assistant of George R.R. Martin at the time). Daniel was the one who convinced Ty that this world Ty had build would be a fantastic backdrop for a series of novels. Most of the first book's story line of Holden and company was based on the RPG playing session that Ty and his friends played. The guy who played the character on which Shed is based dropped out at a certain moment, so they decided to kill off his character. And that made it into the first book. So if that guy had been more involved in the RPG campaign Shed would have lived!

Fun Story about the origins of The Expanse: It started as a RPG the creators played which they later then wrote into a book, during the time they played the guy that played as the Medic had to leave early and they decided to keep that for their book, which is why the Medic is killed in the book/show aswell. And you can see the infulence of that RPG on all main characters as each can be put into a specific role that typicly is used when playing a RPG.

Into the weeds, I think origin lies in it was being crafted as an MMO...it then moved on to the tabletop, where the co-writer was a player. I remember watching a vid years ago with the writers explaining how they met and how this all started. The World Building was so good that they decided to created a cast and turn it into an actual book.

Yes, as time passes, the main players will fit neatly into game stereotypes...which isn't a criticism, but it works well in the plot. But an important point of all that is the fact that this is a very mature story for the creators (who are also in the room with the screenwriters). They know where the story is going, and they place seed information early into the story that will become significant later...sometimes much later.

18:49 Just FYI those aren't railguns, those are PDCs (Point Defense Cannons) which are generally used to shoot down torpedos and for ships at extremely close range. They are turreted rotary autocannons with 6 barrels and spew out thousands of rounds per minute. You can see a railgun fire at 9:54. These are large powerful mass driver cannons that use electroconductive rails to accelerate a dense metal slug at very high speeds. They require significant power and fire one slug at a time.. This is what shot the hole through the ship and took off Shed's head.

Fun fact: The original concept for The Expanse was for an MMP-RPG, but Ty and Daniel realized that it was unfeasible at that time both financially and logistically. So they turned it into a tabletop RPG. After playing that for a while (with George R.R. Martin joining them in play), they had a good story started, so they turned that into the novel series. That was so good it was turned into the show, which was so good Telltale Games just released it as an MMPRPG.... and the circle was completed. 😉 As for George R.R. Martin playing, Ty Frank was Georges assistant for many years. As for him leaving the game, rumor has it his character was Shed. It makes sense. They both left the story. And i can totally see George creating that background for his character. ✌️

Beltalowda, Nikki & Steven are in DEEP. I love it! Steven, you were right: The “Sling Shot Club” is an illegal sportsbook. Racers do gravity-assisted time runs around the outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn and the belt). Sometimes they die. The dead guy on the table was using a gadget to spoof the ID of Bizi Bitiko, the racer who died on the screen. Besides the incredible action and drama, this episode was a lesson in physics, which is important to this show. When engines are on, there is thrust gravity on the ships. When engines are off, there is no gravity. That’s why the bubble of blood splashed all over Shed once the ship started moving again. And why Holden and Naomi started floating away when they were running on the gangplank. Poor Shed. Lost his head 😅 Great reaction, as usual.

About not dying after being impaled. Remember that the gravity on Ceres is not as great as the gravity of Earth, so he was not being dragged down so much after being impaled. Also, people do live after being impaled even here on Earth. :) This was the Episode where I believe most people got hooked on the show. Also, when Naomi was flying away, Holden used a grappling hook on her backpack and kicked her to get the momentum to fall back and use his gravity boots before dragging her back to him. This is a scientifically accurate thing in space and the show portrays it so well.

I worked in medicine in the US Navy for ten years. One of the more common misconceptions people have about anatomy is thinking that abdominal wounds kill instantly (which likely comes from decades of TV and movies portraying it that way). The reality is that people often live for days with open abdominal wounds. Unless the descending aorta or other major arteries are severed, death will likely be very prolonged. In the overwhelming majority of cases, when someone dies of an abdominal wound, it's days later from septic shock due to a perforated digestive tract, as fecal matter contaminates the blood. Next to that, dehydration is the number one issue as the insides aren't designed to be expose to air. Abdominal wounds tend to appear much worse than they actually are, also. That being said, it's not remotely odd that Havelock would have survived that impalement for as long as he apparently did in the show.

@@pendraco2000 I thought Davos is a better fit. He's not much of a fighter, but does if he has to and is more at home doing so from a ship. He is the moral center of whatever group he is in and he is a skilled sailor which is the closest thing to a pilot. And he has a family that he loves, but has been away from for a long time due to his loyalty and cause.

The show runner is Naren Shankar who started back in the 80s on a little show called Star Trek The Next Generation. The Executive producers are Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby who wrote Children of Men. The co-producers are Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck who have written The Expanse books. This entire show makes GoT plot feel like a web series. The ONLY thing that GoT has, that The Expanse doesn't, is a massive budget and fan-base. The 9th, and final book in the series, comes out this year and Ty Franck was George RR Martin's assistant for years. They are not going to make the mistakes that Dumb & Dumber made.

Slingshot club is kind of like a Racing League. The idea is you have no real Engine, just Thrustersand you are using the Gravity Wells of Planets, moons and so on to build up your inertia to shoot you to the next planet or moon. What you saw was the guy butting his slingshot maneuver too close to the atmosphere and burning up.....

Slingshotting: In "The Expanse" this is the space version of "Formula-1" where you use gravity and high-G + high-risk maneuvers to slingshot yourself from one planet's orbit to the other. The faster the better. But it's also riskier. The faster you move the more violent the G-forces will be that you will be exposed to when you shoot yourself into the next orbit. And if your calculations are BS it will happen that you get into an orbit that's way too low, which means you'll be touching that planet's outer atmosphere and burn up like a shooting star. That's what happened to the real Bizi Betiko. His orbit was too low, he was moving too fast and he touched the atmosphere of whatever planet was nearby... Result: he burned up.

I know that ending was crazy! He just got a small storyline and bam..dead. I also kept saying galaxy in my reactions and people commented it's just the solar system. So I wonder if Holden will throw Naomi under the bus? I hope not, but he hasn't made the best decisions. Like you I'm just beginning this show myself!

Earth has the most ships and can actively patrol space. Mars, due to being founded by the best minds the earth had to offer has far superior tech to earth but fewer ships. Going one on one against an MCRN ship, even say an Earth battleship against a Martian corvette would be certain death for the Battleship. These ships are new, Mars had no reason to think it would be a slap fight

Anyone who got to episode four and is/was not hooked and eagerly awaiting season 5 are not human, martian or a belta and should reconsider their science fiction values...lol Fair enough to those who do not like this genre of show though like GOT its bigger and better than most other scy-fy action/political/humanitarian dramas.....Nikki & Steve enjoyed the show from ep 1 and are hooked especially after this one ep.4 like we all were/are... Don't usually like politics. But The Expanse does it so well. Love power struggle between Earth, Mars and Belters. There even more going in The Expanse you never really know who's on the right side. So many characters you really like. But Chrisjen Avasarala has to be one of my favourite, although would never want to be on her bad side

Well you are in for the ride now, it only accelerates from here. A couple notes, in a closed system like Ceres, everything is recycled, water, air, organics; the same is true on earth on a macro level if you think about it. In the fight at the hanger, Alex uses the frigates PDCs, point defense cannons, they aren't rail guns.

Fun fact: this story was originally a tabletop roleplaying game adventure that the writer played with his friends. At one point, one of his players had to quit the game, so his character needed to be written out. This is how Shed died. Also, Miller was written in as a side-story, as a new player joined in a separate forum to play. Funny how great stories are born sometimes.

They weren't over matched, what happened is those ships grouped together to give the impression of a slow large OPA ship which would be little threat. Once they realized it was a trick, they immediately dusted off 4 of those ships. But were compromised, which allowed them to be boarded by the last 2 ships. The Martian ship was lost, but she took out 6 very advanced warships. If they were prepared for it, they probably would have survived it.

21:56 I imagine the rod simply missed most of Havelock's vital internal organs... to be fair, it was quite centered, so if it missed the heart (too low, I think) it would have gone between the lungs... probably damaging the oesophagus or the stomach (possibly too high) and almost certainly the spine, but if it missed any main arteries it wouldn't necessarily kill him _fast..._ (it'd probably have killed him _eventually,_ though, if he hadn't been found); us humans can take a surprising amount of abuse.

Marc B. Poblet yup and as long as the rod isn’t taken out until there’s a medical team to go in to fix any damage, it’s probably what’s keeping him alive as well. It’s basically a stopper at this point.

So a quick lesson on patching holes in the hulls of spaceships. A patch kit simply needs a hardshell with a flexible o-ring seal larger than the hole. Cover the hole and air pressure will keep the hole sealed. No need for foaming sealant. (This type of patch is in use in today’s space programs)

Best written show on TV, and flawlessly produced. Every character is interesting, human, relatable, and engaging. I loved watching your reaction to this episode - it is one of my favorites, because it takes the characters from a place of extreme distrust to the beginnings of becoming a team, a crew. And I love the way the show takes four episodes to get us there. (There are so many great characters to love in this show - Amos will definitely become on of them for you!)
