The Expendables 4 is a 2023 American action film that is the fourth installment in The Expendables film series, following The Expendables 3 (2014).
The film stars an ensemble cast including Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, and Randy Couture reprising their roles from previous films, with Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, Megan Fox, Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, Jacob Scipio, Levy Tran, and Andy García joining the cast. It is directed by Scott Waugh from a screenplay by Kurt Wimmer, Tad Daggerhart, and Max Adams, based on a story by Spenser Cohen, Wimmer, and Daggerhart.
The Expendables 4 was released in China on September 15, 2023, and in the United States a week later, by Lionsgate. The film received largely negative reviews from critics, with criticism for its plot, action sequences, Stallone’s limited screen time, Waugh’s direction, absence of most of the original cast and the poor visual effects, and has grossed $42 million worldwide against a budget of $100 million.

As soon as it was announced Megan Fox and 50 Cent were on board for this movie I just knew it was going to be trash. Casting Megan Fox is the equivalent of them casting Ronda Rousey in the 3rd film. For them to bring back Randy Couture out of all the actors from the 1st movie is a real slap in the face to the franchise. Its like the new Fast and the Furious movies and the recent Terminator film. The magic from those franchises are gone. The first 3 Fast and the Furious movies were great. Terminator 1 and 2 are legendary. The first 2 Expendables movies were great. Anything after those are trash!!

The novelty of these films wore out for me after the 2nd one. I had no desire to even watch this one and probably never will. I mean the cast alone sucks ass. Megan Fox, REALLY?! These movies were suppose to be about getting legendary action stars together and making an excellent action film. From the way this one sounds...no body gave a shit. Solid job on the review.

What kills me is this franchise has never lived up to its potential. The first only had the team together for the finale, which was awesome but that's it. 2 had the team together, but again only gave Stantham cool fights. 3 was all in out trash except for Mel Gibson and Wesley Snipes brief acting scenes. Again this is all about Statham!!!! They just never learn what the audience wants!

It really is weird how they somehow never managed to figure out this slam dunk premise. How hard is it to just have cool action scenes with the actors people want to see. Its not rocket science. But they managed to screw it all up. Even when they did have them all there it was the most bland and boring ways possible to shoot actions scenes.

Haven’t seen it, but the trailer made me wanna puke. Expendables 4 is 9 years too late to the party. They had all that time to come up with a decent sequel, but instead they came up with this. 2014 was the year Expendables 3 came out and it was also the year John Wick came out! You’d think they would’ve watched that and stepped up their game on a technical level! Also John Woo expressed interest at one stage for directing Expendables 3 well they missed an opportunity to hire him to direct this (but it’s probably for the best). As for the cast, what a joke. They could’ve had Mark Decascos, Michael Dudikoff, Sho Kosugi and Jeff Speakman but no. Also $100 million budget?! It looks like it cost $100,000! It looks so cheap it’s embarrassing. I’m not wasting my money and time on this one.

THE EXPLANDABLES, which are movies about the classic machismo of 8Os action movies, but still, somehow, MEGAN F0X not only had a combat & action role in TE 4, but also had the role of leader of THE EXPLANDABLES team, by replacing STALL0NE for most of the film, when she wasn't even in the previous TE movies. WTF! At least the action scenes with R0NDA R0USEY in TE 3 made sense due to the fact that she's a professional wrestler, judoka & mixed martial artist; but that's definitely not the same case with MEGAN F0X.

The director, Scott Waugh, was also the director of the Jackie Chan-John Cena project which was originally going to co-star Stallone so maybe that's why he got the job. That film, Hidden Strike, was filmed in 2018 but only released this year, mostly via streaming.

I was very surprised this even went to cinemas given it felt like a 'straight to streaming' project made for clicks from fans [like the awful Escape Plan sequels which also feature 50 Cent] and the trailers looked pretty poor. Given 3 wasn't a hit 9 years ago and the series felt like it had ran it's course, doing a part 4 now feels years out of date and a half-hearted attempt to wring more money out of the series. Stallone's minimal 'contractual obligation' involvement [with no writing credit unlike the first 3 films] and Arnie's absence [as he wasn't interested] says a lot.

It's technically been in development since part 3 came out which costs are included in the budget and during Covid but I agree it's very suspicious. Part 3 also cost $100 million and that at least had star power in Harrison Ford etc while the new cast is very C-List.

I saw this opening night and i FUCKING HATED EVERY MINUTE OF IT!!!!!! It starts off with a badly acting scene of a kid’s death where the kid just looks confused and bored the whole scene (which I don’t blame him for with a movie like this), Sly just dies at first but then he comes back randomly and it’s revealed he let a person die in that plane crash over a shitty ring so now Barney Ross is now a despicable character in my eyes. Literally the movie focuses on Lee Christmas and in this one he tries to pursue a bitchy Megan Fox character, gets betrayed and fired by his OWN friends (which the only ones left are Couture and Lundgren who feel even more useless in this one than 3) and then punches a live streamer and getting fired. I kid you not, the theatre was so DEAD ASS EMPTY And the gore is there but it’s just headshots and thats it. Don’t even get me started on the scene where we are Couture take a piss in the corner while the team is held hostage because they stupidly get themselves caught. 50 cent and Fox are NOT action stars, they’re ones that belong in the bargain bin. And Andy’s character is obviously evil when you see him, plus NOW we are focusing on references to the Ukraine war with the villains plan. When I watch movies like this, I want mindless action NOT political references to real life. And the action is direct to DVD garbage. In the end, this is my #1 WORST MOVIE of the year, and I hate to say it but I would ONLY watch Dial Of Destiny over this because despite also being shitty. Dial at least ended with Indy and Marion reconciling and getting back together plus Indy didn’t die at the end. This movie has zero good scenes and felt like I was watching Die Hard 5 again. Glad this bombed opening weekend and lets hope we never get a 5th

Statham and Stallone must have a clause in their contract that their characters don't get killed. I guess Stallone dragged Dolph into this because he was in the other movies. But Terry Crews, Jet Li, Randy Couture, and even Arnold Schwarzenegger didn't wanna come back for this shit. 2023 is definitely gonna be one of the worst years for movies.

What up Matt. I wasn't ready to watch This Expendables 4. I knew it that it was going to get worse than Ex3. I would see Cynthia Rothrock , Katherine McNamara Maggie Q would be far better choice than Megan Fox and Levy Tran. I would see Michael Jai White far more better than 50 Cent. I am going to say this before and I will say again, Megan Fox isn't a Action Star at all, she doesn't fit in the Action films and isn't the greatest actress. I also don't like the new team

Fox did do an action film, Rouge, a couple of years ago and Levy Tran was in the MacGyver reboot but Maggie Q would have been a much better addition [and she's done a lot of low budget films and TV work recently so probably was affordable]. Fox did a film with Stallone's daughter Sistine [Midnight in the Switchgrass] so maybe that was a connection to being cast here [given 50 Cent is a friend of Stallone's, hence pops up in all the Escape Plan films and was wanted by him for the first Expendables]

Yep, I had no desire to see this film. I knew it. Looks terrible! I said Expendables 4 wasn't needed. And yet, we get Expendables 4 still! I better not see anymore of The Expendables films. Matt saved me yet again from a movie that would be wasting my time. It really looks like Tom Cruise truly is one of our last hopes for action films.

I liked the film but I didnt love it, 50 cents character was annoying to me and i sadly missed a few scenes so maybe they explained it in them but I missed so many of the past expendables that I never got an explanation where they were at and they werent even at barneys funeral, it just rubbed me wrong.

​@@malivore7264In fairness they don't explain what happened to characters like Mickey Rourke when they drop out in the first 3 films [bar Bruce Willis who gets a token line 'he's out of the picture']. They should have either had the 'funeral' or whatever it was off screen and had the expendables long disbanded at the start and Sly/Statham have to put it back together to sidestep the continuity questions. I'm guessing 'in universe' they've either retired, left the group [like was implied to happen in 2 where Billy was 'working his notice' before his death] or been killed.

I get that but its still cheap to me, they worked on this movie for almost 10 years they couldnt provide an explanation at least for the recurring ones-jet li, terry, bruce, arnold, if they are dead fine they should explain that so I feel bad we dont know, maybe they explain in deleted scenes but if its non canon then it kinda dont matter.@@jamesatkinsonja

@@malivore7264 The whole thing is strange as on one hand it feels like they wanted to appeal to 'legacy' fans [by bringing some cast members back, saying 'it's R rated unlike part 3' in the red band trailer and having Jacob Scipio play Banderas' son] but also make it a new beginning by not referencing the past members and adding several new characters and it's just a mess. I doubt there is any deleted scene referencing the past characters sadly. They could have put in a line or two saying 'where are they now for sure.

Re 55:27, Simon West [The Mechanic] and Patrick Hughes [Hitman's Bodyguard] feel like Millennium films choices as they've done other films for the studio and the head of the studio is credited as 'casting director' on part 3 but certainly Sly had a lot of control on 2+3. However, I doubt Sly had much to do with this entry given he's not got a writing credit and is only in a borderline cameo [he probably was only on set for a week or two].

i heard bad things about this one, ........... the whole series feels "expendable" (ex2 was fun enough though) , its all horribly generic, a bunch of generic mercs doing generic jobs in a random place (mostly wharehouses) no character has a real backstorie, its all shallow youre not involved, the cgi tricks do the rest.... every solo movie of theirs had more heart + story + characters, hooks etc(+the action had more punch + weight) , this feels like if a AI created an (soulless) actionfilm

I went to see this last month since I'm a fan of this franchise and I saw the previous 3 films in theaters back when they came out. While I did enjoy some of the action sequences I couldn't help but think to myself what's the point? They waited 9 years to make another installment. I understand they had problems with production and getting it going but come on, its been a decade since the last movie. Its too late and most people don't care anymore. Its been so long since the last one I've met some Gen Z people who were like "what the hell are Expendables?" Anyway needless to say this is by far the worst out of all 4 movies. And I didn't even like 3 that much. Pathetic line up. Horrible green screen and CGI. Dated quick cuts during fight scenes (its not 2010 anymore. Stop with this shit.) 90% of it takes place on a ship. Feels like a Jason Statham movie and he dominates the action in the second act. I do like Statham though don't get me wrong. I'm a huge martial arts fan so I was excited to see both Tony Jaa and Iko Uwaiss join and do their thing but they didn't get much screentime. Just a waste of time overall. Oh yeah and I also agree with you about Megan Fox. She is not convincing as some badass mercenary. She needs to climb back into her Land Rover and go get her Starbucks after her nail appointment lol. And the new leader of the team? Give me a break. Even Stallone seemed like he was mentally checked out of this and just going through the motions. At least Statham has some charisma and brings some energy. Utter disappointment. I hope they don't make another one.

Look at the poster Jason Statham is billed higher than Stallone. Statham picked up $25 million for this disaster show! I read what he earned, Statham is a wooden actor and he acts and plays the same character in every movie. He is terribly overrated as an actor. Instead of paying so much money to Statham they could of pushed the boat out with solid practical effects and editing like 80s action flicks. This movie is an abomination and Stallone should retire. To think that guy is a screenwriter and director of many films and he signs on to work on more mediocrity shows he only cares about a paycheck.
