Wow, thanks a lot for your words. Please, don't feel bad at all. Your kind words do really compensate anything else. I really appreciate that. I guess I'm not the kind of person who thinks so low of the viewers to push them to subscribe each time, and I tend to stay away from social networks. I do this channel because I love watches, photography and history. One reason I might not grow fast is because it takes quite some time for me to put a video together. I try to make them the way I'd like to see videos, and that's a lot of work. But well, right now I'm working on two videos, so I expect to have more videos published soon.

I think a lot of people have been or are on the same journey. I myself would love the 36 but have settled for a Serica 4512. It's got more of an omega feel with the arrow hands but has the retro explorer feel in spades. awesome vid !

Great video! Thank you! I really love the Explorer and hope to get one someday day. You had some great quotes in this video, about that the Explorer is your watch Destiny; and that the actions of a person make the association of the watch. That’s something I always need to remember since I always feel that my Moonwatch is my watch destiny; and my kids are now associating me with my Moonwatch! Yet I’m always tempted to trade it in for the Explorer, since I love that too! It’s hard once we catch the “bug” to only be a one-watch guy!
@TheWatchFrame
@TheWatchFrame 11 ай бұрын
A lot has changes since this video, but after some experiences my thoughts have changed slightly. I'd suggest not to trade your watch. The most important thing here is the sentimental attachment to a watch, be it the Explorer, the Moonwatch or a Casio A158. That is something hard to replicate again. That kind of attachment is very hard to pass from one watch to another. Both watches are great and each in its specific way. I sincerely though the Explorer was my destiny when I made this video, but now I'm no so sure. I'll explain in a future video and will cover it briefly in the SOTC video I'm currently editing...

Love this video! My Explorer journey started with a San Martin 39mm Vintage Explorer - nice watch but too much negative space on the dial. Then an Alpha Explorer 36mm - an excellent homage to the 14270 Explorer. I wanted a 1016 homage next, so picked up the latest version of the Smiths Everest. Loved it so much, then bought a Smiths Commando and a Smiths Silver Jubilee. I've had excellent customer service from Timefactors with all 3 watches. Now I am waiting on my AD to get me a 124270 Explorer. I also want a 36mm Traska Summiteer in mint green.
@TheWatchFrame
@TheWatchFrame 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your story. I too had a Smiths Everest but couldn't get around the idea it was a copy of the 1016, not a true homage. After the awful experience with the Smiths Expedition I sold both never to look back again at this "brand" or better said, this company. Glad to know that there are experiences of having a good experience after support was required for something being wrong with the watches from Timefactors. The Traska is awesome in 36mm. The green is also very tempting for me but need to sell the 38mm green one first as I'm planing to do. The 124270 is a special watch and hope you get yours soon!

Thank you for this beautiful video and your journey! I share the same love for the Explorer and had the Grand Seiko Heritage black dial for a year as an alternative but thought it was too elegand for an explorer. Been hunting and comparing for months and finally decided the new Hamilton Expedition 37mm as the alternative. Although it has bezel and different style, I also wanted something of its own design not a direct homage. Given the bezel is same color as the case, I think the dial is closer to 36mm Explorer. Wearability is hopefully as close to Explorer but could be more similar like black bay 54. My Expedition should be arriving this week, too excited. If you do another alternative video, I found Omega Railmaster 36mm discontinued to be very close but the price ia also very similar because it's discontinued.

I've had s similar Explorer journey during which I deviated more into the Explorer 2 territory. Long story but I did come back into Explorer territory with the latest Tudor Ranger, which is obviously 39mm. I do have some smaller watches and have considered the 36mm Smiths as an Explorer test but there is also a brand called Enoksen that do a modern looking 36mm Explorer, affordable and uses a Seiko hybrid/meca-quartz movement, it's called the Deco. I have another model from the Enoksen range and can vouch for their customer service and quality. I may try the Deco. As a side note I wish I had bought the Lorier Safari (Urban Gentry) copper dial.
@TheWatchFrame
@TheWatchFrame 2 жыл бұрын
Didn't know about Enoksen and the Deco model. Thanks for sharing the information. Looks nice. I believe the 36mm is kind of a magical size for this type of understated non obtrusive and elegant watch, but yes, it take some time to get used to it. However once on that route it is really hard to go back to larger sizes, except for divers, pilots or the like watches.

Great video! I think you missed the most obvious alternative, the Tudor Black Bay 36. Keeps a similar case design with similar glossy black dial and indices. Also keeps similar proportions and quality. All for a fraction of an Explorer.

Yes, I missed that one and a lot more I guess. True. I have been considering that one more after I got the Explorer as a matter of fact. Back at the day I didn't make much research about this option but now it seems like a very competent one.

Fantastic video and congratulations on purchasing your Explorer! The heart wants what the heart wants! I love the Explorer dial layout as well so I do have a few watches in that style, and one day would love an Explorer myself, but along the way I did find a couple of watches that scratched that itch. One is the Seiko SNKE63, a watch with fantastic lume and is 38mm with a 20mm lug width. Another is from Long Island Watch, the ISL-54, bigger at 40mm but dances between an Explorer/Ranger homage and has a orange seconds hand. For myself, I am wearing the Version 1 of the San Martin Climbing watch/Explorer homage with a sterile dial and vintage lume. It has to be my favorite watch, I would say! I will have to go to your review of the Explorer now! 🙂

Thank-you very much for your wonderful video. There are so many of parts of your journey that I can relate too - the hunt for that one watch. I think I know that I want the Rolex OP 36mm, but I still second guess if it’s too small for my 17.5cm wrist. I’ve even purchase that black Tropic strap you have in the video in preparation. Your video has helped me to feel more comfortable with the 36mm size. Did you ever doubt the Explorer 36mm size before buying it?
@TheWatchFrame
@TheWatchFrame Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. No, I didn't have any doubt about the size before buying. Actually that was the trigger I needed to go checking the watch and finally buying it. I knew I wanted it in 36 because I wanted something more elegant and less conspicuous. I had gotten used to 36mm since I tried that size first a couple of years ago and got sold to it. I have had more doubts after so many comments in the reviews I made saying it's too small. But no, it is not, not for me at least. It is something different and has its own charm and presence and one has only to get used to it :)

I, too, am a huge fan of the look of the Explorer. But to my mind, the value of a Rolex is not there. On a lark, I decided to order the $60 Pagani PD-1692, which is a close copy of the Explorer with a Seiko-made NH-35A movement. As a test, I felt it was easy to spend the $60 to see how I liked the watch. As it turned out, I LOVE the PD-1692. The case, bracelet, build quality and time keeping of the NH35A totally won me over. I am quite pleased and. fully satisfied with the Pagani Explorer copy. Awesome watch and a truly incredible value! I would buy this watch again in a heartbeat.
@TheWatchFrame
@TheWatchFrame 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for commenting. It is true that the Explorer is overpriced but mainly because of the brand Rolex. Taking the brand aside, the watch is worth well around 4.000-5.000 euros easily. The movement is simply awesome and the finishing unbelievable. But that's price, not value. We give value to our watches. I'm very happy with the Explorer despite its flaws, but also I really enjoy the Addiedive Rolex 1016 direct design copy, that, on the other hand, allows me to have a glimpse of what the true Explorer, the 1016, could feel like. We find nice watches in all price points and of all natures.

Actually it took me to achieve the watch to also fully appreciate all the other watches I have or have owned. Of course that comparison and appreciation is only possible with the "real deal" so to say, but the alternatives are very well worth too to have or to have experienced. What a mean is that sometimes there's people, me included, that might not be able to achieve or may even want to spend that much money and we need to take pride and joy of the pieces we get meanwhile.

Great story, unfortunately there's no big and deep path to Explorer for smaller wrists, where you can wear 34-36mm only for promising look, so I keep staying with San Martin, because there's no real deal gap between CN microbrands and Khaki's, for example, not saying about Smiths even, they're very overage in terms of quality, there is some C63 from Christopher Ward which looks pretty good, fresh and unique, but for me they're just too modern, I want slight vintage look of Explorer nor Ranger, so yeah, that's my little story, somewhere-in-between, and funny thought I still staying with such a cheap homage, only because it fully embrace my taste and wants. Khaki's are cool tho!
@TheWatchFrame
@TheWatchFrame 4 ай бұрын
I have some experience with a San Martin watch and was amazed, even back then, about their quality, so nothing to feel ashamed there. If you like the looks and performance of the watch, then great. The design of the Explorer 1016 or the Ranger for that matter, really broke the mold. Hard to make something new improving upon that. Neither Rolex nor Tudor will faithfully replicate that design, they will adapt to the modern tropes, which for some leaves only the option of direct design copies of watches and here San Martin is really offering great options. I hope to try one of those in the future.

Very enjoyable video & exploration ( sorry...). I thought about the Traska but I'm now saving up for the 36 Sealander as the specs & design seem better/enhanced. I see TGV has just co-produced his own version - probability already sold out . However, alternative it has some nice specs I think the dial & case designs are not for me e.g. it's too much like my Citizen 'Ray Mears ' - fine for a field watch but not enough for full 'GADA'. (¡Uf, que texto largo!).

Thanks for commenting. Yes, the 36mm Sealander is a great option. I had the 39mm GMT Sealander and the quality and finishing is top notch. I sold mine because it was the white version and there was not enough contrast between the hands and the dial. However the quality and general specs is so great that I hope to get the black GMT Sealander in the future. You can't go wrong with either the Sealander or the Summiteer. In my case I like the numerals, my personal involvement with the watch and the brand and the hardened case. Would love to have both if money wasn't an issue to be honest. Oh, the bracelet with the on the fly adjustment of the Sealander is awesome. Simple awesome.

Thanks Dennis. First I'm quite fine with true homages but true, the SBDC115 is a watch all of its own. I have been a real firm candidate for me when I just recently decided I wanted to have an Alpinist too. See, I've been long wanting to have the SARB017 and when a friend and follower of the channel let me tried his, I knew I had to have one. However prices where a bit too high and I did consider the SBDC115 and was about to buy one, seriously. Still to this day I feel I would really like to own one, maybe the blue one to have a change. Well, I finally got the SARB017 at good old retail price and it is great. Actually wearing it while I write this lines. But yes, the SBDC115 is a mountain and exploring watch all of it's own and seems to be very versatile. Love it.

I too believe that spending the huge amount of money the Explorer does is something a bit too much. For me at least. At the end of they day any of the watches you mention are great all rounders with their very own merit. More than that, anybody should be more than happy to have them and bond with them. For me the Explorer has been something almost accidental for many reasons. Everything aligned and has been a travel of discovery. Now I can certainly say that the itch scratchers we find along the way, are sometimes, the best of options. Nevertheless the Explorer is just another, although expensive one, of those watches. Wear your watches in good health!

Happy for you that you achieved your goal. On my side I know I will not buy the Rolex. I just bought 2 SanMartin, the explorer homage and the bb36 guilt homage to pair with a tan leather. May I suggest you look at the Ironwatch RX8003, an homage to the OP explorer from the 50s with the clousdeparis dial, quite an interesting alternative too.

@@TheWatchFrame it got delivered a day early. My first impressions, very vintage. It looks and feels vintage. It feels like a watch from a bygone era. It wears so good. The only complaint I have is the crown. It's smallish by today's standards. The crown looks fine and goes with the thin case, but is a little harder to screw down than a larger one. I have discovered it's easier if I turn it over and screw it in while holding the watch upside down.

This is most beautiful video that I watched within 2 years. Our taste of watches are exactly the same. I followed the same way including I bought omega aqua terra and Tudor bb36 etc. but rolex explorer taste is completely different. However I have one doubt for this piece. New version is not 36 mm and lugs are 19mm and tapered to 14mm so when I tried it seems so small according to my taste. Old version of 36 mm is perfect but the caliber is old and pretty expensive. In fact I have black OP36 but those are not the same watches. Therefore what will be your advice for me? Kind Regards Levent😊
@TheWatchFrame
@TheWatchFrame Жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot and great to read this comment. About the size the thing is that at the beginning it was disappointing the 19mm lugs, but after finding a couple of nice leather straps and NATOs and a couple of heavy duty spring bars I bent I have been able to change straps which was one of my concerns. To me the bracelet is grea, by far the most comfortable thing I have ever worn and the proportions spot on considering the rest of the watch. The only thing is that this watch is less "toolish" looking and more elegant or refined while still a very capable watch with a great movement and designed, as all Rolex, to last a few lifetimes. This said I have very limited experience with the older references but still I feel they are great. The 20mm wide bracelet is a plus, but on the other side those bracelets are on the lighter side and without the quick easy link adjust. However I believe that if you prefer that one, the 114270 should be a great option with still a very solid an reliable movement. I have a couple of friend from this channel with that watch and both are delighted. I know this is not of much help, but if you prefer the proportions of the 114270, considering that prices have been falling a bit, maybe you could find a great deal. But once you get used to the way the 124270 is, I believe its peculiarities end up growing on people.

Hmmm hard to pic one. Probably all of them would do the trick. I'm thinking of the Traska and probably the Alpinist. I've had the Traska for longer time, but probably would go for the black version as is more versatile. On that regard the dark green of the Alpinist is versatile enough as to be the only one to have for most purposes.

Nel tuo percorso come hai considerato il Lorier Falcon? Come lo valuti rispetto a Traska?
@TheWatchFrame
@TheWatchFrame 10 ай бұрын
Bella questione.
