For those curious I recently bought my first "adult" watch and after getting the runaround by Rolex and doing some research I settled on an Aquaterra, blue face with horizontal teak wood appearance and 6 o clock date window. I love it, the older guys in my family love it and are envious of it. It's a great feeling and great looking watch and I 100% endorse anyone on the fence to at least try it on. Mine fits like a glove and I rarely take it off after 3 months!

@@nothinginthename8231 expensive, refined, thought provoking etc. Don't get me wrong you can get a G shock that will be the most accurate and reliable watch you could ask for and be happy. You don't need to spend $5000-$6000 for a nice watch! It's hard to explain but everytime I look at it I'm reminded of all the hard work, time, effort and emotion I put into my life since I graduated high school and I wanted to reward myself with something that said "You have graduated from a child to an adult and you can do anything you set your mind to".

Agreed, Aqua Terra is one of my favorite all around watches. Second behind it is the classic dial Seiko Alpinist. The triangular markers manage to straddle the line between bold and sporty or fine and dressy. Unfortunately I don't think I could justify one with the overlap I think it would have with my GS Snowflake. Either one would end up sitting at home more often then they deserve.

Most alternatives are bigger than say the OP36. There’s a ton of great everyday watches at 38mm-40mm and 12mm+ thick but at 36mm and under 12mm thin there’s really not a lot of options. I’d go Black Bay 36. It has a similar case and design language with a highly accurate but easy to service ETA movement and a more Explorer dial. You can find one lightly used for $2,000 which is a steal for the quality of watch you get.

I think the new King Seiko’s should be on this list too. I’ve gone away from bezel’s and chrono’s and leaned into simple 3 hand watches. And My current collection is just two watches. The Black Bay 36 in blue, and the King Seiko in red… I love them both. I think the King Seiko gets a bad rap for having a 6R35 but the finishing is something else! Totally worth it.

It wasn't that long ago when I looked into buying my first and last Rolex in 2019. The only one that wasn't hyped and easily available was the OP range. I decided to buy the OP 36mm which I ordered from the AD and waited 3 weeks for it arrive. It's a great watch worth no more than retail. I wanted to buy another Rolex in 2021 but there was nothing I could buy for the $10K I had in hand to spend. Everything is so over priced and to me not worth the extra money. Looking around to see what else was out there, I ended up buying a Zenith Chronomaster Sport. Best decision I ever made!

First, I appreciate your work! One of, if not my favorite watch related channel. But, I have to say, I can't help but roll my eyes each time I see another post titled along the lines of "Alternatives to Rolex." I honestly have no interest in Rolex; therefore, no need for an "alternative." This wording plays to the misguided perception worldwide that Rolex is the "gold standard" for a luxury watch. We all know that isn't the case, but the perception has become ingrained in the minds of it seems, watch enthusiasts as well as the uninformed consumer buying their first luxury watch. There, I've said it. Ending on a positive note, thank you sir for your channel!

I’m thinking of a Longines Conquest for a travel / work watch simply for its relatively indestructible build quality and it’s solid, classic good looks. I’ve always found that no matter how long between showers and visits to the barber, walking up to the desk of a good hotel, wearing a watch that at least looks the part, gets you a decent room for the night.

I think my concern with the OP going up so much on the secondary market is that it feels like an 'anything with a Rolex logo' purchase. It's a great watch but it's being dragged up by how ridiculous the Daytona, GMT and Submariner all are now. Teddy does a great job here of highlighting some alternatives but it's really up to everyone buying to find something that really works for them. I am a big fan of the Aqua Terra but also think Omega did a great job with the new Railmaster as an OP alternative and with the Seamaster 1948. Pleased that the GS Elegance gets a mention here as I think the build quality is unbeatable at the price. If it's Rolex or nothing then fair play - it's a big world out there for those that think differently.
@mimikatz
@mimikatz 2 жыл бұрын
That’s wrong IMO. You can’t judge the watch on its GM prices. The OP is surprisingly a very good watch which has the same movement, power reserve, bracelet than the Submariner, Air King, Explorer I. The only way it’s trumped by the submariner is the depth 100vs300m, clasp and the bezel (not a big thing for me as I don’t swim/dive). Because it’s a time only watch people make the mistake of thinking it’s just a cheap Rolex with worse materials, but the reality is, it’s probably the most Rolex watch there is and is the reference Oyster Perpetual vs the Sub, DD, DJ, etc. I love mine, but lack of date is my only downer. With it was still 39mm too
@chrisrigby215
@chrisrigby215 2 жыл бұрын
@@mimikatz Certainly not dismissing the OP as containing cheap materials or being a botch job by Rolex at the bottom of their range. The point is that their appreciation has followed that of some of the models higher up the range and that hasn't been the result of buyers just realising that the OP exists, it is because the likes of the Daytona and GMT are now out of reach for so many more people that might have bought one at retail.

The BB36 is from a much more established brand with a lot more history and probably a higher regulated movement. I'm curious about the fact that the Sarb033 looks almost identical to like a SNKL23 at much higher cost (same complications similar case and bracelet design). Even if the movement is better on a more expensive watch if it has the same complications how does it matter from a wearer's perspective? And by that same merit why would you buy a more expensive watch like this if it visually identical to the casual wearer that is not an engineer that actually understands how a watch movement works?
@randomocityvideos
@randomocityvideos 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve owned both. SARB is the superior watch and is worth the money. The movement alone is worth the upgrade. If you just want to tell the time a Casio is much more efficient.
@MrAtaguas
@MrAtaguas 2 жыл бұрын
@@randomocityvideos A casio doesn't have the aesthetics of the seikos in question here. My point was the visual aesthetics and of course the cache of the brand. The movement is invisible and without the right complication impossible to spot for a person that hasn't memorized the spec sheet across the entire catalog.
@randomocityvideos

@@MrAtaguas Looks are only one factor to consider, though a watch with superior materials and finishing will inevitably look better. The 7S26 movement in the older seiko 5s doesn't have hacking or handwinding, and is just a clunky old movement all around. The modern Seiko movements, such as the 6R15 in the SARB line, are much more pleasurable to use and are typically more consistent and reliable. The Seiko 5 is not a bad watch, for the price. But upgrading from the Seiko 5 to a SARB is the same reason you'd upgrade from a normal Seiko to a grand Seiko. Better movement, better materials, better build quality. And yes, in my humble opinion, better looking.

I really want to get an Aquaterra but it bugs me that a watch of that price is so thick. It is just 3 hander with date. Seiko has the same problem but their watches with 6R movements cost less than 1/4 as much.

I was interested in the omega red AT in lieu of the coral red OP potentially, so tried on a black dial one to gauge the 38mm size on my 7.4 in. wrist and didn’t seem or feel small, but felt much more refined/dressy w/the polishing rather than sporty, so sadly not what I’m looking for in a colored dial piece :/

A little late to the party but, as best alternative to the OP I would add the Nomos Club, in specific the 748 one. I owned a OP 39 in white but it was too big for me (why I didn’t take the 36…) then I came across the 748 and… didn’t left my wrist since; can be dressed up or down according to the strap you choose and works well in a business environment as well as in a pool

This is an excellent list. I knew the Sinn 556 had to be in there, but I was also happy to see the Monta Noble included. Little bits like that the Noble wears a little bigger helps those of us that haven’t gotten to try them on. There are some other great watches on the list, and the new AT Terra Cotta is my favorite. I was not one of the haters on those releases. I think they are smartly taking advantage of the trend for more color, while keeping things a bit more unique with the process/look of the dials. The colorful Sinn 556 releases are certainly much closer to the OP color/look yet those were praised and sold out quickly as you noted. I was glad to see the inclusion of the Balls. I had been eying the Engineer III Marvelight Chronometer, but the bracelet makes me hesitate. I do think you missed one relatively affordable option, and that is the Citizen NB1050 line (NB1050-59L, -59E, -59A). They are available on some sites for the low $400 range, with the list under $600. From what I have seen, they are slightly better than the SARB033/35, with the minor negatives of a 19mm lug width reducing strap options should one want to go away from the bracelet, and a male end link on the bracelet extending the L2L a bit. The 38mm size is a sweet spot, and a Miyota 9011 movement with sapphire at that price will make the wallet of the most value conscious buyer cheer. For a bit of that OP color with a slightly integrated OP quartz look the NJ0150-81Z (yellow) and NJ0150-81X (green) gave a great look, though the 8000 series Miyota and 50m WR let enthusiasts down a bit. They do some with sapphire crystals though. If one wanted to get a bit more wild (and drain the bank account more quickly), the dials on the Citizen The Citizen Chronomaster solar quartz line are killer. I really think the NB1050 is the best all around do the 3 lines mentioned though.
@liquidtunes
@liquidtunes 2 жыл бұрын
Knowledgeable comment from a true enthusiast. I agree completely about the Citizens. The NB1050-59A is the closest to the OP 114300 which I fell in love with. And the yellow quartz is strikingly similar to the current batch of coloured OPs.

@@CsabaSulyok42 I am glad you like it. I recently watched a comparison with that and the Seiko SZSB013. Even though the list price is not much different, the Citizen really blew the Seiko away. Better movement, better bracelet, sapphire vs. Hardlex, lume vs. no lume. I have seen the Seiko on sale much cheaper on Amazon, but on a regular basis it is not much cheaper than the Citizen. Citizen needs to market that watch more though. They do not even have that line on their USA website (where I'm located). It's not hard to get a hold of here, but it would be good if it was easier. I think they would have a mini hit on their hands.

Great content Teddy. Recently I got hold of my datejust 41 from the AD after almost 12 months of being on The List and honestly after holding the watch, I was like for the money there are simply several more alternatives that offer much more. For about $500 more that the cost of datejust I got myself a JLC master calendar last year. That JLC is at a different level. Not sure how far this notion of Rolex being the benchmark can stretch.

I was thinking along the lines of using Tudor as Rolex alternative as well, but I have my eyes on the Style line. This line of product is arguably a lesser-mentioned one of Tudor products, but they match the Oyster Perpetual appearance perfectly for $2,500-$3,500. One thing that edges them a bit higher than Black Bay 36/41 is that they do offer 38mm dial option which matches the 39mm Oyster Perpetual closer and is a good option for those who find BB 36 too small and BB 41 too big.

Teddy, have you noticed that many manufacturers seem to pride themselves on launching new models and making sure only a handful of people can buy them? Seems that this trend is growing and is becoming very abrasive to collectors IMHO. You highlighted Sinn 556 with the color dials being unavailable as soon as they were launched. Rolex with its Oyster Perpetual line. Tudor with its chronograph models. Omega with its MoonSwatch and Aqua Terra colored dials. Eric Wind designed and Seiko collaborated with Rowing Blazer were quickly hard to buy. I could go on, but these are supposed to entice new buyers to the brand. This trend is starting to turn me off and look for brands that want to sell to customers. Conspicuous consumption and snobbery does not apply to entry level watches yet the trend continues. I wish you could corner their CEO's and grill them Mike Wallace (of 60 Minutes fame) to share how this turns customers off.

Well, couldn't it also be defended that they serve the customers who are in fact the best customers? Maybe, at least in some cases, it's just that some are 'better collectors' and therefore snag the new pieces deservedly? And an 'elite' is served the best, it's been like that for ages, even some luxury cars at one point were not sold at all to 'mere mortals'. Sure, many will immediately say that it's not really their best customers they're giving these watches to, but it's easy to make that accusation and less easy to prove it, especially in all cases. It seems that Europeans are more used to there being a true elite that has long worked their way into the graces of exclusive product suppliers, actually really being the reason for the market to exist, and further than that many special/new pieces are even developed only due to their commissioning of them. And the 'upstart new-money' Americans are confused by this, don't understand that not everything is mass-produced 'Chevrolet Corvettes' that anyone with a bit more money can buy at their local dealer's lot.

@@pistonburner6448 I understand your point, but I feel differently. If it is an expensive piece like a Rainbow Daytona or Patek Nautilus when it was in production, then I fully agree with you. My perspective is on the entry level watches like the Rolex Oyster Perpetual or the Sinn 556. The brands are free to do what they want, but I would think that entry level watches would be more readily available to the masses. Just imagine if you could order a Rolex OP and take delivery within 12 months how that would make you a huge Rolex customer if you never had a Rolex. Again, this is my opinion only.
