Totally. Regardless of where a business is located, it can always be affected by changes in society (i.e. demographics, lifestyles, norms, etc). Those social factors may change though as a business moves to a new location.

Hello Mr Alanis. I have a question regarding the components of the external environment that I have seen in the "Fundamentals of Management Essential Concepts and Applications Eight Edition" textbook which was written by Stephen P. Robbins, David A. DeCenzo and Mary Coulter. According to the book, the six components are economic, global, political/legal, sociocultural, technological and demographic instead of the competitive that you mentioned in the video. May I ask why you did not put demographic as the component of external environment in your video? Great video by the way. Thank you. :)

Julie Wiscon Hey Julie. I'm somewhat familiar with that textbook, however I haven't read it myself. You'll find that their are some differences in the terms of the external business environment depending upon what book you read (frustrating I know). For example, many texts actually split the external business environment into two separate environments (general and specific environment), while others refer to simply one broader environment. (see episodes 146 & 147 for information on these and you'll notice the differences) Along with many other texts, I don't separate out the demographic environment because it's already included in the social environment. The social environment covers changes in demographics, consumer preferences, attitudes, and values. So by creating a separate environment the information is a little redundant. Overall, I don't think it matters a great deal (except for tests of course :), as you would consider the same factors when analyzing the external environment. The only thing that would differ would be how you categorize those external factors. Hope this explanation clears things up a bit. Appreciate your comments and good luck with the rest of your course.
