The Extraordinarily Ordinary - S01E09 - Neurofibromatosis II: The Physical & Mental Impact

Today’s episode of The Extraordinarily Ordinary follows the journey of Tuah Arsyad, a 13-year old boy who was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2) when he was only 8 years old. The disorder affected his motor skills as well as his ability to speak and hear. At 11, he went through a surgery to remove a benign tumour in his brain. Due to the surgery, he was unable to eat and had to be milk-fed via tube for 8 to 9 months. This affected his mental health tremendously. He soon started isolating himself in his room and refused to do anything at all.
Meet Arinah Yatim, Tuah’s resilient mother who has to care for Tuah and his brother Indra Hafiz who is autistic. Arinah’s routine revolves around her two children as her husband is the sole breadwinner of the family. Tuah’s diagnosis, surgery and subsequent emotional roller coaster took a toll on Arinah’s emotions and mind as well.
As a family, they are going through tough times but they are going through it together. Tuah Arsyad now has new interests and appears to be taking things in stride.
