Had a HK 770 in 1990...Martin Bryant’s incomprehensible Broad Arrow Cafe massacre was the catalyst for legislative changes which subsequently prohibited ownership...My recollection of the HK was that of a sporting rifle with magnificent engineering...Without peer accuracy...Flawless reliability...Great review...Thank you.

I owned one of these rifles from a collection we got when my fathers uncle died and we inherited his gun collection. It was stolen from my vehicle and I have never had the chance to replace it. It was the best hunting semi auto rifle for sure. I got to take 2 of my largest bucks with it before I lost it to the thieves and have been keeping my eyes open to run into one ever since. Say USOG you don't really need that one do you? Haha

I'm learning so much here... I alway just look at the used section in the gun stores. For my first rifle I want to chose something that has been carried, cherished, cared for and has character. I think I am owe to the animal that the gun I use hunting was handmade with attention to detail and a certain mindset, that why I am looking for older guns. This is such an amazing guide you are putting out. Thank you also for your kind way of presenting without any elitist attitude or "gun politics" talk. Cheers

Shot a 770 in New Zealand over 4 visits, hunting feral pigs and goats on a high country sheep station, fantastic reliable and strong, it was one of the station working rifles and took a daily beating, also used a FN SLR in the same role, equally as strong and reliable but it was a bit smoother to shoot, the 770 is a bit harsh.

In referance to the M-1 Carbine, the most important innovation here is the development and use of the short stroke piston. This was developed by Marshall "Carbine " Williams and then refined by Winchester. It's method of operation is what allows the M-1 Carbine to be so compact. Where as the piston in guns useing the long stroke design, the piston movement is measured in inches. In the short stroke design it is moving about 1/10" only. But it exerts enough force to move the action rod backwards far enough to extract and eject and then chamber a fresh round. When referencing the Auto - 5 one must also note the Remington 11 and the Savage variant. The important element with these is not just the long recoil, locked breach/bolt/barrel method. But just as importantly is the innovative breaking system using adjustable friction rings around the magazine tube to slow down or speed up the compression and expansion of the recoil spring depending on whether the gun is using high or low based shotshells.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns thank you. Having worked on enough M-1 Carbines and untold M-11's A-5's and Savage variants I understand the design, function and repair of these firearms. Not to mention many, many years of of smithing. And the most important thing I've learned Is that you can't fix it if you don't understand how it works. And parts swapping in the hope of stumbling upon a solution is not gunsmithing. Stay healthy.

MG 42 ... MG3 is roller locked. After fireing barrel and bolt travelling locked together a little bit . The gasses the projectile releases after leaving the muzzle pushing the whole assembly backwards. The muzzle break on it is called Rückstoßverstärker in German. Inside and over the muzzle of the barrel is the hard to clean- Rohrführungshülse, basically a piston with a hole in the center for the projectile. That is a Rheinmetall - patent. When we forgot to install the cocking lever after cleaning the only way to seperate barrel and bolt is to remove the muzzle break and push the barrel down. Than and only than the bolt separates from the barrel. H& K`s are roller delayed. Famous : my P9s, MP5 and G3... Just for Info.I made a video how to assemble the G3 bolt, worth a look.It is rated as the best video related to the G3 bolt in YT.

Very good explanation in how the roller system works. If it weren't for you I would not have considered several instances when I did see Hk770's on the shelve of at least one specific gun store in Delaware 30 years ago and also a Dept. store or two (i.e. Sears, maybe K-Mart or Wal-Mart) Also, I can't believe I never considered the purpose of the chamber fluting, to prevent stuck casings. Typically, the risk of stuck casings would exist with bottleneck rifle cartridges, but chamber fluting is not only present in the 770 and other roller operated rifles (G3 type rifles Cetma design // Hk91/Hk93) but also is present in the P7 series pistol and Mp5/SP89 // Hk94 sub-machinegun. The P7 is gas operated, not blowback. There is a piston which hangs at the forward end of the slide, and a barrel, which in addition to a fluted chamber, also has polygonal rifling, and is fixed to the frame (i.e..380 Walther PPK type and smaller) Also, all Hk USP Series pistols from Mk23 SOCOM forward have the unique Hk polygonal rifling, but no fluted chamber, with one exception, the P9S in .45 auto/ACP was introduced before the P7 and is a blowback operated handgun. Mike, I bet you're surprised I know that one! You may already know the P7 is a most interesting pistol, often referred to as the 'squeeze cocker' due to the forward extension on the grip which must be squeezed significantly in order to engage the trigger with the striker firing mechanism. It can then be held in position with little effort (similar to the significant let-off experienced after camming over into full-draw on a compound bow, especially modern hunting bows) When the squeeze cocking lever is released, the pistol is effectively on safe, virtually mpossible to accidentally discharge. It is said that some police were trained to hold the trigger to the rear and use the forward cocking handle as the trigger for double action shooting.

The best explanation on how a roller locked system works is thls. Consider it a delayed blowback. There are recessed into both walls of the receiver two cylindrical rollers. These have a small gap between them creating a pocket. The bolt body has two wings that can move in and out from the bolts body. These wings each have a single cylindrical roller attached to their tips. The bolt body's bolt head has a tapered tail at it's rear. This allows the bolt head and tapered tail to slide in and out of the bolt body allowing the tapered tail to push out the wings and rollers. These rollers are forced under pressure upon firing into the gap between the two receiver wall mounted rollers and provide a locked breach until pressure drops to a safe level and the rearward thrust can overcome the camming action of the rollers and open to allow extraction, ejection and chambering of a fresh round. It's really quite simple.

Hello I'm from Germany and for a few years I owned a HK770 in 308win. I sold it very quickly because many reasons for example this Rife is much too loud for hunting the lock spring forward you have no deer more in the Woods, at the End of the lock system is a rubber pad that is very fast demolished. I shoot some Wildboars with this HK but it is only the civilian version of the Bundeswehr G36 and the next reason ist you can't shoot lead free Bullets in a Polygon Barrel - the pressure is going to high. I go now hunting with a Sauer 101 Gti and this Rife is gorgeous 😊👍

My tale of woe! I wish I hadn't seen this video. I had a new HK 770 back in 1987, along with a HK 300 in 22 magnum rimfire. I also purchased the HK detachable scope mounts as well as the auxiliary 10-shot magazine for the 770 (legal at the time) and the 15-shot clip for the HK 300. The magazine that came with the 770 was only 3 shots, which seemed to largely defeat its purpose, while the HK 300 came with a 5-shot clip. All HK magazines were solid steel. Real quality too: none of that garbage polymer from Southeast Asia that Savage uses. You have to watch your thumb when letting the 770 action slam shut - as I learned the hard way. (Real hard!) Anyhow, the HK 770 may have been among the most accurate guns I've ever owned. It would shoot 3-shot, half-inch groups with Federal Premium factory 180 Nosler Partitions right off a car roof. Plus it cycled flawlessly. So did the HK 300 in 22 mag. However, after it took 3 shots each time to put away a couple of crows I was grossly underwhelmed by the 22 mag's power. The HK 300 was also extremely accurate (1/2 inch, 5 -shot groups @ 50 yards ) but accuracy went to hell at 100 yards. Transonic effects, possibly. I also tried Remington 308 Winchester factory accelerator rounds in the 770, that sent .22 caliber, 55 grain sabot rounds out at 3,770 fps. Nevertheless, it was too much to expect even this fine rifle to be a varminter: 3 -shot groups were no better than 2" @100 yards. However, I foolishly and quickly got rid of both of them when they still virtually new. I took them on a hunting trip along with a 340 Weatherby Lazermark Mark V. The HK which would have served me way better (for black bear) sat in the trunk the whole trip. Too darn ugly, I thought. But now that I see it once again in this video, it doesn't look ugly. Too bad, because the HK 770 sold new for about $600 US in 1987. Now they're asking $3,000 for used ones. Bah humbug!

I have been reading African Game Trails recently and really enjoy it. I like that he has his son Kermit with him as you can feel the pride and respect he has for his son. It is an amazing story of his adventure in Africa and sits well with other African hunting books from Selous, Bell and Taylor. It harkens to a lost time that I would love to have had the opportunity to share in, even with the hardships many of the PHs went through. If you haven’t read the other authors I mentioned, consider trying them. They are all great reads, especially African Rifles and Cartridges by John Taylor. Have you seen the HK SL-6/SL-7, its the same rifle but has a different stock and front sight, along with a wooden upper hand guard. It reminds me of the G-43 in terms of appearance. I think the story went they were made as hunting/ utility rifles, and were also marketed towards police agencies that didn't want something that looked like a modern assault rifle as to look less threatening. It seems they were even less popular than the 770 as they were introduced later and importation was cut off in 1986.

Mike, that H&K is a nice looking rifle, for sure. It always amazes me how the Germans & Austrians often utilize classic stock designs to make a more aesthetically pleasing product. Many American stocks seem to be an afterthought instead of a critical component that enhances the finished product. And this applies to the current "polymer phase" that's taken hold over the last 20-30 years also. Well, that's just my humble observation. Thanks and have a great weekend!
@UnitedStatesOfGuns
@UnitedStatesOfGuns 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul - I applaud you - my goodness some of the stocks these days...I handled a brand new lever action the other day; nice rifle but they used a shaper and a drum sander on what was actually a nice walnut blank. Since no one shaped anything it looked like one of those wooded holster storage and stock for a Mauser C96 - a big, ugly, odd buttstock. The C96, on the other hand is beautiful because the shape serves a purpose and the pistol goes inside. The polymer stocks can be, as you note, as attractive as hand held vacuums - great big polymer blobs with a pipe at one end and weird colors. Now a new issue: two have shown up here where the owner took the stock apart to clean the action and on reassembly tightened the screws too much ; cracks and warped plastic. Yet I understand - it is hard to tell when the screw is tight enough and then the plastic starts giving way. And, people are using ratchet mounted allen and torx bits due to change to no slot screws. Interesting times.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns My only solution is to buy what appeals to my sense of style and pass on the wasted or neglected efforts. You know, so many European stocks have a slender grip area and I wish American companies would emulate that single aspect. Come to think of it, European stocks, in general, are shaped thinner and I really appreciate the ease with which I'm able to hold and control the rifle (or shotgun). Aesthetics and function, the Germans and Austrians are way in front of us... Anyway, enjoy your weekend.

These are amazing rifles. The roller delayed Blowback is a bit brisk and harsh recoil wise in this rifle but its still bomb proof reliable. I like that it will still eject brass with extractor missing and will tend to feed just about anything that is not underpowered. The barrel also lasts forever since it has polygonal rifling. I dont know the twist rate (I have read its 1:11 twist ) but I see others going to 168gr with decent results. Top shelf rifles that dont get enough love. I love the H&K stuff and since my country has terrible laws with firearms one cannot get the HK91/G3 and this is the closest thing that can be got if you can find them. Great video!! I bought my H&K770 new 30 years ago, in the south of Sweden.And I shoot it a lot on the range for moving target, during off huntingseason, with good accuracy. And use it for driven hunts, during the hunting season. Mostly pigs and stag deere. Very little recoil and I'm on the target immediately, for a followup shot, if needed.I used to shoot it with open sights, but my eyes doesn't approve that anymore.So I use a Swarowski Z6i 2-12x50 wich also allow me to shoot in the dusk.The quick attachment for the scope, works perfect.I reload Norma cases and some of them tend to be beaten up, after been fired. But not worse than I still can reload 'em.What I don't like about it, is the safety. I should been placed where it's easy to reach with the thumb, And the noise it's make when it's chambering the cartridge.It's impossible to chamber quiet! Sure you know the story. German engineers "refugees" after the war in Spain designed the Cetme with the roller system. His best version was the C in 7x62 NATO. Many people think that the Cetme comes from the german HK G3 . It is rather the other way around. Your weapon uses the same system. There are even modern pistols and subs that use it. I served in the Army with the Cetme C. I don't know if your HK has a rifled chamber. The Cetme yes, to facilitate the extraction of the case. Although it is a weapon that never fails, cleaning it is really laborious because part of the gases reach the mortises of the rollers. Simple, effective and reliable. The bayonet is exactly the same as the FR8 you have. Santabárbara armory by the way!

Good video as usual! H and K also uses a gas delayed blowback in the P7 pistol I find it fascinating but they go rogue when dirty and the delay doesn't delay if you know what I mean. AMT used a dimpled chamber in their "Automag" 22 magnum. I think the case obturated into the dimples to hold it there a little bit longer. I was perplexed how they fluted the chambers but hammer forged barrels make a lot of things possible since all the features are on the mandrel. I watched them use the GFM machine down in Ilion NY and the barrels came out a dull cherry red from working the steel the way they did. Shot gun blanks started out about a foot long I think they were tubing. They induction heated them and upset the breach to make them thicker and then hammer forged them to thickness and length. This was 35 years ago so I hope I got it strait.

Perfect description - you did. And I've heard about the rogue (love that wording) P7s and naturally people have done things with G3s that results in a virtually indistinguishable firing cadence over 20 or 30 rounds - the gun sounding more like thunder than anything else.

HK put a fluted chamber in the MP5 (HK94) series and when I went to the range after our Tactical guys there was 9mm brass all around with black pinstripes all around the case from front to back. Pretty cool looking. I fired the MP5 and it's so heavy for its size it's like shooting a 22LR semi-auto and so crazy accurate. When a HK770 comes up for sale in Canada it's very rare and they cost $3000 used. A mint one with the box and original papers might go for $4500 Canadian dollars which is about $250 US lol not really but out dollar is getting bad.

The rollers and the locking piece only which looks identical, but not sure about the locking piece either. Differences mainly because of different placemnet of the blowback spring. @UnitedStatesOfGuns
@UnitedStatesOfGuns 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Altus, Acciaio is the Italian word for steel. Acciaio Vickers translates to Vickers Steel - which means the steel used (likely for the barrels) is excellent. Several Italian makers inscribed their shotguns with similar quality related indicators. You might have seen "Bofors Steel" on some rifles or "Krupp Laufstall" or "Bohler Antinit Stal" or even "Blitz Stal" - many different makers wanted consumers to know they use excellent steel . As far as your shotgun goes, maybe there are other markings you could send me - but actually, you have one of the many very fine "consumer grade" Italian shotguns worth around $400. in some kind of condition. I could be off a bit if there is engraving or rust - but you get the idea. Hope this helps.

I can understand the sentiment against the 770 - it is one of the few sporting rifles that started out as a sporting rilfe but has a definite military feel and superiority about it. I'm not sure about my wording but handling one of these and there is a clear sense of brutal efficiency. The 100 yard groups for this 770 are about .05 inch - by 3 different shooters - astonishing by any measure. I'm still not sure what all these tight groups mean in any sporting rifle - intended to hit a deer or moose - but the repetitive accuracy is something to behold nonetheless. BTW - brass in these takes a beating - necks are dented and the flutes leave residue. This is a semi for the ages - tough and unforgiving. I like them.

Great video but it's incorrect to call a roller delayed blowback as having no gas system. Yes the flutes are a kind of gas system that prevents a case from sticking due to superheated elastic flow at the point of ignition but this has nothing to do with the actual gas system. In any blowback design the actual case itself turns into a gas piston and it is what propels the bolt and bolt carrier backwards. The rollers provide a few milliseconds of extra time to allow the case to cool further before its very violently ripped out.
@UnitedStatesOfGuns
@UnitedStatesOfGuns 5 жыл бұрын
Wonderful clarification Chris - thank you. You are correct - in the broader sense of physics, the Auto 5 is also has operated - the origin of its mechanical function being the conversion of the solid gunpowder to a gas. I guess people mainly refer to the mechanical operation most closely related to the mechanical function of the mechanism, as opposed to the origin of energy release - but your point is valid and well made.

Hello - Yes - the steel cases eject in an almost fluid manner - I suspect because they do not fully obturate the chamber in the first place as the case material does not expand as quickly or fully as brass. The steel cases are ejected further and action operation is probably a millisecond faster. Also, more heat is carried away by the steel cases - good heat sinks.

We all regret not Buying one of these , long ago. One of the biggest EXCUSES...., Used by Manufacturers, about Great Rifles produced long ago, is Manufacturing Costs. Nowdays, that is absolutely Baloney..., with Modern CNC Machinery and exceptional Tollerences. Bring back these old Greats...even on a Special order Basis . Bring back the Finn Wolf Sako Lever action, The Win Model 88, ect. They would make a Fortune... Manufacturers are Absolutely Stupid at Times.

So this is better than the Remington 770? And by the way, when did you start making videos from prison?

Hahahaha - love that - yes indeed : the prison gun show....I'm still laughing. And the Remington 770....well....there have been better rifles.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns haha happy you liked it. And definitely better rifles out there than the Remington 770. Made the mistake of buying one once.

well, I hope I did not make a mistake, I bid on a Sears Higgins Model 50 on Gunbroker. www.gunbroker.com/item/815941273, After doing some research I cannot figure out the odd checkering at the wrist, nor the position and how it is attached rear sight. If you are bored could you take a peek at this rifle? The Idea of getting my hands on an FN Belgian is overwhelming my logical senses . Thanks!

Interesting rifle Ed. The checkering looks about right - as in - I can't see anything wrong. I had these Higgins FNs and every one shot like a house on fire. I don't know what's happening with that rear sight - odd to cut a dovetail over the chamber like that but maybe the factory did it. Anyway, it isn't much of a dovetail and I doubt there is danger or damage in it. The action is superb - as you know - I don't think you can go very wrong buying one of these. If it seems fishy I usually just lower what I'm prepared to pay. Hope this helps and good luck!
