My 20 year old Sako still makes my hart smile every time I pick it up to hunt. Beautiful wood, action smooth as silk, reliable and accurate. It is my favourite for hunting plains game in South Africa. Chambered in the best caliber known to man - 30-06😉

I have a 300 Wby MK V built in 1972 West Germany that happens to be my favorite rifle perfect bore no erosion.

I was thinking the same... Browning makes some nice rifles in their deluxe line. My wish list is the model 70 with a maple stock or the white gold Browning with the maple stock :) Give me with the 30-06 Springfield or the 270 Winchester! Classic 😊

I have to agree with you. for a long time I wanted a Mark 5 in 300 Weatherby. but my wife purchased a Remington 700BDL in 300 Win Mag, and I enjoy that rifle very much. Mine has nice wood, and no deer that I ever shot went more than a few steps (other than one where I shot thru a 3" oak tree before the bullet impacted the deer), and it went about 60 yards. It's a sub moa gun, and I have shot it a lot. I enjoy your channel, so please keep up the good work. It's clear how much you enjoy your hobby. and seeing many guns that i have never seen before is my favorite thing. Thank you!

I bought my first deer rifle in the mid 70’s - Weatherby Mark V in 257 Weatherby for $300. I was surprised that the ammo cost a whopping $1.00 per round. How times have changed. I still have the rifle.

The gun I first used for deer and antelope was a 300 weather be in an original South Gate California Mauser style rifle, this was my grandfather's gun. The first new gun that I purchased was a Mark V 257 Weatherby, I paid $900 in 1992. The 257 Weatherby is still my favorite deer/pronghorn cartridge.

I purchased a Carl Gustaff Model 3000 in 6.5x55 based on one of your videos talking about the unique action design. I think it’s great, happy to have it in my collection even though I never intended on being a collector. I have a gorgeous Griffin&Howe 300Wby on a FN Mauser action and a Weatherby (South Gate California) barrel with chromed rifling. Straight wooden stock and G&H sidemount for a 2-7x30 Zeiss scope. Perfect for African plains game. Another favorite is my Mannlicher Schoenauer carbiine 6,5x54 with a vintage Pecar 2 ,75x ..... scope. Majority of remaining rifles are mostly vintage Sakos from 22LR to .458WM.

I own one of each, Golden Eagle and Weatherby. The Golden Eagle is virtually as good as the Weatherby. Mine is a 25-06 making it my most accurate rifle. After 10,000 rounds it still shoots 1/2 min of angle.... I have seen them online for as low as $450.00... Shocking, really. I bought mine new right after they went bankrupt in the late 70s. For about $400.00 at the time... I have never had any problem with it. A great gun at a great price... And very very pretty.

I also have a Browning medallion X-bolt in 375 H&H. And I hate it. It's a fine gun, with good wood, but it has A removable magazine that can only be reloaded when out of the gun. Yuck... so one has 4 shots 3+1, but then one has to pull out the mag. Load it outside the gun, and then put a round in the chamber, then put the mag in, then hold the top round down, whilst closing the bolt. If one has four hands this all can be done in a few minutes. For some reason it can not be loaded top down whilst in the gun... Yuck. Very pretty though...

I have over the years, had several weatherby rifles, mark 5 in 300 weathery magnum and my other rifle in mark 5 was 340 cailber. My friend had a 378 for bragging rights but never shot it much till it had a break installed. I still have 2 Weatherby shot guns , Athena 28 ga and a orion field lll and they have good looking wood. I had a winchester super grade in 375 H&H, it was a used gun but the gun smith said that the bore was pristine. I had the gun when I lived in Spain and had planned safari in Africa but the trip fell apart. You have such a gorgeous collection of rifles. I watch lots of your videos, you do a real good job on them. Thanks

Your tag line was best high end. You need to define best and high end. Many manufacturers start with a barreled action and do custom stock or metal work. Hoffman and Griffin and Howe come to mind. These are truly beautiful, functional and high end.

Gander mountain in our state use to offer a few Merkel rifles in stock. Usually in a glass locked case ...the price was over 2k...in 2004. Beautiful wood, unique action & engraved...

Walter Gehmann invented the Mauser 66 in the 1950's. It was produced for Mauser by Heym starting in 1965. That and the Merkel KR1 are both change barrel systems. The Mauser 66 being the first. Walter worked for Mauser Oberndorf years ago and was a champion shooter. I have the 1965 model that has a fluted action slide with 458 and 338 Win Mag barrels. They are the best deal on the market for a highly reliable and accurate rifle.

Another interesting video Mike. Thank You! It made me reflect on my own path in collecting, toward what will never become expertise although that was never the goal. In watching your videos I've noted with interest the occasions when you shared your thoughts on your particular guidelines in evaluating value, and how it may differ from others, as is only natural. Your views on triggers, or whether the appearance of a well-used rifle is pristine, etc. seems to have a secondary status (at least on occasion) as compared to the mechanical design elements of the action, the source of the wood, the round, or the function of the individual rifle as a whole, for example. As collectors acquire knowledge of 'the objects of their affection' we develop our own tastes and begin to acquire a sense of our own sweet spot; where our chosen qualities and their cost develop into a hierarchy that helps us assign 'value'. By then usually, the objects in our collections have their own stories and even personalities, and we realize that we no longer 'own' our possessions but rather they own us, and we take our place in a long line of temporary Stewards. Your story about the Browning Bolt Rifle was resonant and poignant, and reminded me of a discipline among Japanese ceramic artists. Their specialized skill is called Kintsugi, and in it they honor the meaning and art of Mending. Cracks and broken shards are filled and rejoined with gold, and the repaired piece becomes even more prized than the original ~ not for the gold, but as testimony to the experiences of the broken Vessel, now made whole again. It is seen as more beautiful for having been broken. I think the person who repaired your Browning knew something about that philosophy, and I'm grateful that you presented the beauty of that work for us to see. All the Best, Lou

I won a Kleinguenther K-15 in a raffle years ago. Butter smooth Voere action, 1/2 m.o.a. guaranteed, beautiful wood. It would qualify right up there with the Weatherbys. Unfortunately it was in a magnum caliber I didn't enjoy shooting and it was a closet queen until I sold it. Had it been in 30-06 or 270 or something similar I'd still have it. Good show though!

Yea, I got screwed when we were living in Germany. I bought a Cz model 1 from England. I had a photograph of the firearm from about 15 feet and the owner stating the firearm was in mint condition. As you can assume the rifle came and the wood looked like it was dragged down a gravel road. I refinished the walnut stock and gave it an oil rub.

That’s an impressive collection of fine rifles ! About 10-12 years ago I had the chance to handle a Purdy and H&H rifle , I was impressed by the quality and workmanship! The most elegant rifle I own is the Weatherby rifle ! Later on I bought a Ruger no.1 which came with very nice wood and good metal work ! There are some very excellent British rifles I’ve seen through the years !!

Great video as usual. I’ve owned several Weatherbys over the years, a .300, .378 and my newest one is a .30/.378 which will be my go to elk rifle. My Jim Borden built 1k yd BR rifle is in .300 Borden Caribou which is a slightly blown out .300 Wby. All of my Weatherbys are shooters though I no longer have the .300 or the .378. I do still have my Borden BR and the .30/.378. My middle son has the 6.5/.300 on I believe he’s taken a couple of elk with it. My old Weatherbys were made in West Germany, my newest one was made in California but now I want to get one made in Wyoming. I was especially interested in your Merkel, I have known about them but haven’t investigated them yet, but I will now. Thanks for your videos, I always learn from them. All the best.

I had a Colt but can’t remember the calibre, super looking, reminiscent of the Weatherby line up in fit and finish which I had too in a MkV in 300WM and a Mod 66 in 7x64. All long sold off as nearly 80 and still trying to downsize. Excellent and fascinating video

My Great Grandfather's, BSA model 1917 in 30-06. Has a fancy custom maple stock and perfect bluing. Controlled feed, cock on close, and a shortened 20" barrel with open sights. By far the nicest hunting rifle I've ever seen. It will be my son's.

When I bought my 1976 Ruger No. 1 I passed on two lefty bolt actions, a Mauser Model 77 and a Carl Gustav 8000 or 9000. The lefty version always represent maybe 15 percent of production.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns What we lefties know is that a Number 1 is completely ambidextrous. I paid 349CAD for it and it turns out it was the less common checkering pattern on the Bicentennial No. 1's. It ended up in a Number 1 collector's collection. Just remembered. The other lefty was not a Carl Gustav but a Mauser 3000. As we both know I should have bought all of them, but I earned 440CAD a month in 1976. I shot a group, 5 shots of course, with the Ruger 25/06 that measured .585, and an aggregate well under and inch. That was in Benchrest Shooters Canada registered competition.

My vote is the Weatherby Mark V Euromark with an oil finish and any of the Steyr Mannlicher rifles! I am partial to the oil finished wood stocks and either a matte or gloss blue finish.

For the ultimate finishes read Bob Newells book on gunstock finishes! Results Are superb but there’s a large amount time invested. It worth it and your efforts will last I bet for centuries.

Very educational video! I enjoyed it. I have a Heym 7x57, dbl set triggers, express open sights on a 98 action. I've heard of it referred to as a cigarette rifle. I enjoy the Mauser immensely. I also have a Win. Mdl 70 Supergrade in 338 win mag. 1994. The Win. I purchased new in '94. High luster blue, Beautifully figured Walnut with marble cake throughout. 21:52 The mauser was a trade and I suppose only worth $1600 to $1900 but its look, feel and shootabilty is terrific. It handles like a premium rifle. Those two are 2 of many but I feel very lucky to have found them. If I had paid $2500 each I would still be very satisfied. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and perspective.

Those are my thoughts also. The glamor isn't so glamorous if the rifle doesn't feel right in your hands. Calibers aside...finding an elegant rifle that you will appreciate is kind of like trying on shoes. Only my personal opinion of course but of the firearms I own, the ones I appreciate the most are the ones that feel right in my hands which allows me to point it in a natural manner. Fine wood and polished bluing are a plus!

I have 1968 Weatherby Mag mark V west German. My dad gave it to me in 2000 after I harvested a good bull moose. The gun is beautiful to me. It has a lot of dings and nicks. But it has harvested more than 100 big game. It shoots like beast. I know I'm safe in the woods when I have it with me.

I immediately wanted to type "Rigby", but since you, sir dropped English gunmakers from the conversation. Nearly all of my friends chose Blaser and several of them have very decorated examples. I really hate plastic, so I went with SAKO. Although, for me personally the term "High-End" implies the best there is.

I have never owned a Weatherby until recently I purchased a MKXII with the tubular feed. Very handsome rifle with an unusual single round selector on it. Took me a few minutes to figure that one out due to it not having any documentation with it.

I have a Weatherby Mark V in .375 H&H but it has a composite stock. It was made in Japan in the 90’s. I wish it had a fancy wood stock but I bought it at a very reasonable price that I couldn’t pass on. Very informative video sir. Bud Cary.

Mine are a Sako L579 with full stock, and Steyr model M, also a full stock rifle with double set triggers. I bought the Sako in the spring of 1973, and the Steyr in the spring of 1980. I sold my beautiful Sauer 90 some years back, mistake. When I see the European guys hunt, they are primarily using a Blaser rifle in .308 or .300 Win. Mag., usually with an Aimpoint sight.

Beautiful rifles there Mike and thanks again for such an informative video! I have a couple that I consider jewels but none as high end as those! I have a Vanguard LazerGuard with a highly figured walnut stock and the fancy oak leaf carving just like the Mark V LazerGuard. It just happens to have exceptionally figured wood and is a beautiful rifle. Another favorite of mine is my Browning XBolt Medallion. It has some sleek contouring and beautiful woods, light machine engraving on the flats of the receiver and the cool 3 diamond checkering on the underside of the fore-end. Lastly, my Kimber 84L Rocky Mountain Elk Federation "Banquet Model" is a thing of beauty. It has a pre64 Winchester-style controlled feed bolt and safety with the bolt etched with the RMEF logos and production#. The floor plate is beautifully engraved and 14k gold overlaid w. an Elk and mountain scene. The stock is beautifully figured and classically shaped with a satin finish. It is a very nice, lightweight rifle. You really have to appreciate the gunmaker's art, even on these mid-priced rifles.

I've admired the Nikko Golden Eagles I've seen from time to time, though most were pretty well worn. Your video reminded how much I like that rifle and I came across an NOS one in .243 and bought it through an on-line auction. The price guide showed recent sales from $585 (good-used) to $1498 (NOS) USD. I paid a bit less than the high range against 21 other bids. While I probably paid more than it is actually worth, as they say, the heart wants what the heart wants and I love beautiful rifles. Anxiously waiting for it to arrive!

Hi. Like your VIDEO'S. Have to correct you on one of your comments about barrel fluting. Barrel fluting does not make a barrel stiffer. If 2 exactly the same barrels are put side by side and one is fluted, the unfluted barrel will be more rigid than the fluted barrel. However, an unfluted barrel of the same WEIGHT as a fluted barrel is not as rigid as the fluted barrel. When clients ask me about a light weight hunting rifle, I advise them to go with a larger profiled barrel and have it heaverly fluted. Doing so gives them a light weight rifle with the bennifit of a more rigid barrel.

I would start with Winchester Model 70 super grade at the low end, then Kimber, then Steyr Mannlicher,then Sako85,then Weatherby Mark v, then, Dakota,then Mauser/Blaser,then Griffin and Howe, then the sky is the limit. Or any rifle that fits in any of those price points as it ascends from lowest cost to highest.

My choices are: Ruger M77RS in 7mm Remington Mag, or .338 Winchester Mag. Both rifles made in the 1970s with beautiful walnut stocks and high gloss bluing.

My dream rifle was always the Weatherby Mark V with a wooden stock. Beautiful, reliable and great rifle. Finally got one after many years. Mine is a USA made with beautiful wood. I know some people prefer the German or Japan made ones but I am pleased with mine

To me, the Weatherby Vs made in the US make the most sense. They're all great, and the German ones are scarce. Yet Roy was American and Weatherby is an American company - and a great one - and the Mark V is its flagship rifle. Of course, the incredibly fine Vanguards are made in Japan and other models were/are made in Italy and elsewhere. Maybe one day the Vs might be made in Iceland and be superb - I'll still look for "Made in USA." Just my humble opinion. All the best.
