Depending on how much time and patience you have, the Wheel of Time series really gets going with book 4 and further - in terms of prose, world building and relationships. It is totally understandable if you do not want to sink the hours into so many pages.

Really enjoyed hearing your honest impressions after reading book 1. Also glad you are going to continue reading, I'm very curious to hear your thoughts as the series goes on!

Yeah Mat doesn’t really get much of a good story until book three and he quickly becomes a favorite character for many people. All the Emond’s Field become favorites for different readers.

Keep reading. Thecgaractets are anything but 2d. Character writing is Robert Jordan's strength. I have never heard the characters described as 2d before. The end of the first book is very confusing, but it gets less confusing after that

One of the things I like about this series is that all of the characters have flaws. So at times you love each of them and then at other times you think “how can you be so stupid?” 🙂.

Example of Jordan's dubious linguistic style `this fire was not at all small, and the room seemed not far short of hot, a welcome heat that soaked into the flesh and banished shivers' he was constitutionally allergic to the phrasing `a large fire warmed the room.' He thought the former sentence is more precise and therefore evocative. He was wrong. That's not precision, it's a finicky fussing textual Asperger's, a style that can see nothing but details (and, more to the point, nothing but a certain very limited palate of details - colours of clothing, speed of movement, types of food, gradations of heat and cold-never the telling details great writers master). It is a style wholly incapable of illuminating penetration or evocation. Another observation is the fact that a well written novel takes the shape of a quest; a linearly horizontal progression through narrative time, Jordan explodes that linearity in a bewildering near-dimensionless knot or tangle of non-progression, utterly stupid. So it was terribly written. I don't just mean the style, although the style is awful. I mean the whole kit-and-kaboodle: the overall structure, and the narrative, the pacing and focalisation, the characterisation, the dialogue, the tone.

If this made you sleepy, the books in the middle of the series will leave you in a coma.

Oh, that is not good news because I already have books 2-5.

I actually liked the early books. I read up to 7 and then stopped, tried to get back into it but hard to remember all the plot lines.
