I feel it should be ED's responsibility to ensure future compatibility with third party modules. If ED makes a profit off of every third party aircraft and scenery that's sold, they can't continue to sell products that may lose the ability to function properly (or at all) in the future without angering a lot of customers. This would be a downward spiral that would inevitably lead to the introduction of new major competitors to DCS; some of which may already be in development.

Which would require them to have the source code for that module. Apparently that's one of the points of contention. After the Hawk incident ED required all 3rd party devs to sign a new contract stating that the source code for each of their modules would be put into escrow so that if the dev folded or something else happened, ED would have what they needed to keep it up to date. Allegedly, RB hasn't given ED any code for any of their modules. That's my understanding. Who knows what's really going on? I know at my work (not game/software development, granted) when legal issues crop up, we aren't allowed to publicly say anything until legal has weighed in on the matter, and most times, provided us a very specific cookie-cutter response we are allowed to use. It's much worse than you think. Because of the drama, people have gotten it into their heads that the issue facing DCS is a conflict between ED and Razbam but this is just a symptom of a contradiction at the heart of DCS's business model: ED develops DCS, they are incentivized to keep adding features and improvements to make the sim more marketable, which means that modules must receive continuous updates too, or become riddled with bugs and unplayable. At some point each and every module ever developed will reach its market cap when most potential customers already own it, at which point the module-developers are incentivized to move on to develop new modules so they can keep turning a profit. They are not incentivized to keep updating old modules that are no longer profitable since this does nothing but rack up cost. This is why every piece of commercial software ever released has a lifetime in which it is supported but is eventually dropped. This isn't a problem that can be solved, it's a contradiction inherent to the business model. No module is excepted. The way to overcome the contradiction is to either centralize development under one company so that the makers of the sim are incentivized to also update the modules, or to go open source. Falcon BMS has been updated for over 20 years and WILL outlast DCS. Not becuase it's sexier or more marketable but because it's open source and its model doesn't contradict itself!

@@nero995 MSFS and DCS are very similar in terms of business model. Asobo builds the engine, and also a few modules. They maintain the core sim, as well as their modules. just as ED does. There are also 3rd party module makers who can submit their work for approval and sell it on the MSFS marketplace. There are two significant differences in my mind: the market cap for GA and airline sims is seemingly much higher than combat flight sims. DCS has also only recently hit around 200 employees. Asobo has been that size for years now. ED is still a small business when it comes to game development. Subscription works well for companies like Iracing, but SaaS creates a feeling of entitlement for new content and features. People will not pay a monthly fee to only receive bug fixes, and performance updates. Consumers will say they want stabilization updates and perf updates in one breath, and with the next they will complain that they haven't received enough new content.

TBT... I think people need to understand that at the end of the day, the reason none of the other third-party devs are saying anything, is that because, unlike Razbam, while they have to wait for money to come in, Razbam has basically called dibs on multiple aircraft and are trying to develop them all at the same time, rather than focusing on one, getting it out, and moving onto the next. The only other dev with multiple aircraft in development right now, is Heatblur, and even then, they've set up in a way that they can handle the wait. From what I can gather of the situation, all of this stems from an issue with RB getting paid what they want, vs what they're contractually owed per module. While it is understandable to want more money, it should be understood that for best results, it is best to wait for contract renegotiation time, and handle things quietly, rather than explode all over Social Media and throwing accusations around. We may never know all the finer details. But I think we can all agree that in the end... Those of us with these modules will get to keep them. After all, ED has the source code, and can fix issues that crop up. But until either Razbam chills out, or another team takes over the development, the modules will remain in their current state. Personally, I'm fine with this. If the modules still function, and bugs are fixed by ED as they come up, that's fine. I would only call a module 'dead', if a game breaking bug comes up, and multiple patches go by without a fix.

There is little chance that a commercial product can actually match a product like that in depth and simulation accuracy while still remaining economically viable. The modules would need to cost a few thousand dollars per user to be viable if they were developed as an actual simulation closer to something like BMS. Sales are very low in simulation and costs are very high. I honestly don't see how DCS has a future with how they keep making half-baked simulation models which are simultaneously high-cost but also not very fulfilling, mostly being just pretty cockpits and a few cool simulations of singular systems. you didn't even say anything about the argument. ED is withholding all payments from razbam, and has been for months, because razbam was working on a Tucano project for the ecuadorian airforce but was designing the military only simulator version at no cost with the approval of ecuador to give htem access to the necessary information to very accurately model the aircraft and to use it for an eventual DCS release module. ED wanted money for this, and simply stopped paying razbam at all, claiming they were taking what they felt they were owed for the "development" of a module on their platform. This being a military contract, they arbitrarily set an enormous sum and simply ate *all* of razbams F15E revenue without paying them an ounce. razbam continued to work for months on the F15E trying to resolve this until they literally ran out of capital due to lack of income. they can't ask their developers to work for no pay, and ED is refusing to accept razbam's claim that they will of course be entitled to their normal share of any sales of the eventual DCS world super tucano, presumably because they know they can ask for huge dollars from a government contract, but since the government contract isn't with ED, it's with Razbam who owns the source code and the information, they're essentially holding them hostage in an attempt to legally aquire said source code and or be "bought out". The side on ED seems to consist of "we could have made a bunch of money off this why are you not charging the ecuadorian government a huge sum" and then withholding cash in an attempt to get razbam to either give them the source code or pay them for the missed revenue, which they can't do because razbam took all their income. It seems like the worst you can accuse razbam here of is unprofessionalism, public outbursts on the part of the CEO, and being too charitable with the ecuadorian government in regards to designing a real training simulator for them at no cost other than the classified performance materials. Razbam didn't steal anything from ED or cost ED anything or put out sub par modules. ED wanted that sweet government contract money that doesn't exist. Razbam is getting obliterated because of it, and frankly as a computer scientist if i worked for a third party company and suddenly had my paychecks stop and my being told that there's literally no money to pay me and we should seek alternative work until ED gives us the revenue from the strike eagle, you best believe i wouldn't even consider simply giving away the rights to code that i worked on to the company that to my view is holding me hostage over something they'd been informed about and that hadn't been an issue until a few months ago when the tucano contract had been worked on for over 2 years with no problem for ecuador prior. Razbam worked for 3 months with no pay hoping they could settle on some agreement out of court with ED to keep updating the strike eagle. Agree with all of this. A lot of very talented people have done a lot of hard work over a long time to make something special work, and the whole DCS franchise, with all the third party developers, have produced something amazing that pushes the boundaries of what is possible. What they have produced is incredible, and so popular, that I can not believe there isn't enough money to go around . I don't know what the dispute is about, but it does seem to me that things have come to a head since the shambles of the F15E release. I appeal to the good folk at both Eagle Dynamics and Razbam to come to some sort of compromise for the sake of their many loyal and, up until now, happy, customers. I feel that this will benefit everybody in the long run. I hope that they are all in this for that long run.

Appreciate the video, Spud. But, for those of us who have the module and don't plan to request refunds, I think tutorials from you and other developers should be kept online. You could just add a disclaimer at the beginning for the sake of new users that there are issues with Razbam and that they need to watch this video before buying the module. I love Razbam products and will still continue to use them. I just don't know, as DCS evolves, if there will be developing conflicts that stop the products from functioning. If Razbam doesn't want to continue, perhaps they can sett all modules to another 3rd party.

I 100% agree with the content of this video, with only one note: dcs is not the only one modern combat flight sim nowadays: there's falcon bms. I know it's a mod of a 90s software, but it has an accurate flight model, complex avionics, atc, dinamic campaign, and decent graphics (always improving, with VR too!).
@hook867 ай бұрын
BMS isn't a contemporary to DCS. It's a far cry content wise. Sure, you've got one real full fidelity module and a dynamic campaign, but DCS transcends multiple eras, has a booming MP scene, and far more content even without a dynamic campaign. The now booming cold war era in DCS is no where near flushed out in BMS. They aren't in the same ballpark IMO. I enjoyed BMS but it's even more sphegetti coded than DCS, and one foot is in the grave. A good dynamic campaign engine on the DCS side will seal the fate of BMS. For BMS to dethrone DCS, it has magnitudes of ground to make up.
@andrealioce43417 ай бұрын
@@hook86 bms is nowhere near with a foot on the grave: the developent goes on and there's aleady a full fidelity f-15c. It's still mainly a one type aircraft simulator (with multiple variants) but it's way more "military pilot simulator" than dcs. Not only the dinamic campaign but the atc, the ai, ground units logic and so on. Both the simulators have to add a lot of things to reach each other: bms all the aircrafts and dcs all the environment. DCS wins in multiplayer (and for helicopters), bms wins in single player. I love both and I'd be very sad if dcs shuts off, but an alternative exists.
@ArchOfficial7 ай бұрын
@@hook86 DCS has never been more popular in actual simulation circles than BMS. Maybe for casual play, DCS is more popular. Arguably it's DCS which has been trying to catch up to BMS for years and failed. The only thing they've resorted to doing lately is pump out as many modules as they can before the company fails and they bail. BMS in the meanwhile will likely keep developing indefinitely, with no real economical pressures.
@andrealioce43417 ай бұрын
@@ArchOfficial a description too much against dcs imho: the chance to use different full fidelity models in the same environment, with the possibility to build complex integrated missions online is a unicum, something bms won't be able to do for a long time to come. DCS has its problems (the free to play base game forces to develop and sell always new airplanes, with very long development times to see a module properly finished; the amount of bugs is high and the times for a fix are often too long) but it is a solid platform nevertheless. This Razbam issue is a hard blow for all the ecosystem, but it's up to Eagle Dynamics to minimize the damage, whatever the Razbam decision will be.
@ArchOfficial7 ай бұрын
@@andrealioce4341 As a counterpoint, none of DCS's systems actually work, so you can't make something resembling a simulation mission in it. All you have is a bunch of different cockpits with different clickable and hotkey-able systems. BMS has no issues with online play fundamentally apart from somewhat antiquated GUI. It's just harder to get into casual arena style scenarios online.

I quit because many of my favorite modules were accumulating bugs and "balance changes" that made them less and less playable as time went on. Huey lost the ability to change seats and control your other crew. R-27s couldn't regain lock after seeing a single chaff particle (intentional change). F-15C folds like paper at 10Gs, while the F-16 got the ability to pull -6Gs or so in the same update (both intentional). Ka-50 3 can't fire rockets without being above 50kph (intentional, but badly implemented). I have been playing in dcs 10 for over 10 years, I think that RASBAM should continue its activities. The most player-friendly company available in DCS. There should be no pressure on this company because basically the guys from RAZBAM are making UFO technology for us and it is probably difficult for them to program such intelligent avionics for all of us. Jealousy or greed? DCS huey with badly programmed wrong size of objects (scale) and virtual soldiers who don't die when you shoot them from an on-board minigan for 10 minutes in the campaign by the Belarusian BELSIMTEK is probably not better. Although the F15C is quite good by the BELSIMTEK .

@RW-zn8vy7 ай бұрын
ED never paid them for the f15E and claims they breached contract. Razbam after almost a year comes out publicly about it and now the community is in an uproar. Also ED said they would have third party sources codes if this were to happen and it turns out that they lied and that aren’t legally allowed to do such a thing.
@simoncampbell-smith67457 ай бұрын
Well said sir. These modules will become dead, they are not there yet and are still for sale. So clearly there is still hope of this being resolved. Once ED removes them from sale then we will call them dead. As a Mig-19 fan I will be sad and the museum I volunteer for here in the UK has a licence to run a public DCS instance with the Harrier. We don't charge and Joe Public asks about DCS and wants to be interested. What are we to do? We can freeze our copy of DCS and still use the Harrier for now. As you said a joint statement of at least saying we are talking would do so much to put many customers at ease.

Here's my solution: ED contracts out the 3rd party devs for a stated price plus a percentage of sales beyond that contract price. So if the contract is hypothetically $1M, then anything beyond $1M in sales on ED's store would give a royalty to the 3rd party dev. The contract is for the entire development of the module, not just early access release. So once the dev has agreed to the contract, they are in it for the long haul and can't just leave it half done. ED ensures they are paid, as per the contract, so that removes monetary disputes. Once the module is feature complete, the module belongs to ED so they can ensure future updates and bug fixes. I also think that early access for 3rd party developers should be limited if not eliminated. Early access needs to be something that is earned by trusted parties. Whether it's modules in DCS, or whole games, the early access release model has allowed for some pretty shady sales practices. Early access needs to be feature complete inside of a year, two tops. This extended early access of modules is getting ridiculous, especially when other modules release from the same developers before current modules have left EA. The F-16 launched in October 2019, and is going on 5 years in EA. The F-14 released in March 2019, and is now over 5 years old, still in EA. RAZBAM is actually one of the only devs that only has a single module in EA right now. Their other products are full release, even if they do end up having some bugs, at least they are feature complete.

Obviously we're not going to get anything out of ED because the ball is presumably in the lawyers court now. Seems that even Razbam has decided to quiet down. Imagine an agreement is reached - perhaps ED gets something for Razbam's alleged use of the MCS SDK on the Tucano or whatever, and Razbam gets an appropriate amount of cash from prior module sales. How much work was lost when they went on a rampage deleting nightly builds? How much willingness will the remaining developers have to once more develop and maintain their products? And finally, how much goodwill has been burned? Surely current and future Razbam modules are tainted by the stain of this mess - how many people would be willing to pick up an EA MiG-23 for $65 in 2026? I really want that plane and I have the cash to burn, but literally anything on earth might be a better investment.

so all these video "F15E is Dead" ecc are made in order to "Be louder" and maybe make our voice heard?
@callsignmaui65657 ай бұрын
Not necessarily. The issue right now, is that the F-15E and other Razbam modules are still being sold despite not currently receiving any sort of maintenance. We don't necessarily know if this is permanent; given the information we have about the situation is needless to say, highly charged and emotional - not necessarily a safe source to base one's opinions on. Regardless though, continuing to sell modules, such as the M2K, without notifying the customers that they're (at the very least) temporarily not being maintained and are suffering game-breaking bugs, is the issue. This is less so directed at the developers, who are obviously doing what they can behind the scenes to come to an amicable solution, and more so for the overall player-base who isn't in the weeds of DCS drama along with some of spud's personal anecdotes. I have to assume, if it's true that Razbam simply haven't asked for their modules to be taken down yet, that some sort of solution is on the horizon, but that doesn't mean that the situation will be amended soon.

It doesn’t matter if razbam continue developing, when they post a statement saying they’re stopping development it makes me never want to buy a product from them again. If you’re gonna sell me something that you might turn around and drop a year down the line nah that’s me out. ED should have access to source code for this very reason written into any contracts with 3rd party devs. Just the same as third party devs should have access to DCS source code for development reasons.

Spoiler alert - everyone *is* jumping the gun. Nothing is dead yet, the clickbait here and the broad assumptions being made are very frustrating. Calling Razbam modules dead when literally a few days ago a bug was fixed with the M2000 is something. Yes to be fair, it probably shouldn't have even happened in the first place but that's besides the point - no one except those specifically involved in the dispute knows the full extent of the issues. As Spud even said himself, we have one side that's not commenting publicly aside from their initial statement and the other that has not only made a few emotionally charged statements to the public, but also has employees and volunteers that likely don't know the specifics making comments too, some of which don't have actual proof behind them (or if they do, they aren't sharing it). All that's happening now is mudslinging on either side when in reality, this has to be settled through legal avenues. I absolutely think this situation is very frustrating as well but this video ain't it in my view.
