one detail i love about the south shrines music in the remake is, the song plays normally.... until you begin to read the relief. then the strings kick in and the dream becomes a nightmare. and the added strings makes it sound like you are looking in an *abyss* with no bottom. and as long as you are inside the south shrine until you leave and re-enter, those strings will remain playing. the strings *only* start when you begin to read the relief. and this effect can be repeated as many times as you enter the southern face shrine. also fun fact: this remake came out on my birthday of 2019. another fun fact: the original on game boy was one of the first games i ever played and beaten, and i can complete it in its entirety from memory.

If you look closer at the map, with the “eyes” filled in, it looks similar to link’s face from the Original TLOZ. There is also a pool of water near link’s eye. The dungeon is literally link’s face crying at the realization of Koholint being all just a dream.

In the Link's Awakening Manga, the revelation at the Southern Shrine is so stark that it actually leaves Link horrified enough that he attempts to abandon the quest, building a boat and attempting to leave with Marin, only to realize that after a few days, that his boat isn't getting any further away from the island. Effectively forced to return, Link is comforted by Marin when she says that life on the island is like a pleasant dream that one day, she feels she needs to wake up so she can one day see the world, and encourages him to proceed forward on his quest. Not long after, the Owl appears, telling Link that Marin knows that Link waking the Wind Fish will bring about the end, and that she accepts it. Marin knew. She always knew. And that renews Link's determination to finish things.

@@AtlessaLink‘s Awakening is absolutely outstanding. One could also interprete the hints given by the owl, the final boss and the Windfish (he said that the REAL dream will be at a later point in time, when Link remembers Koholint), that Koholint could have been real (at least temporarily), since the Nightmares came from the outside, wanting to live on Koholint forever and that the Windfish needed Link‘s help who also came from the outside; Because, why would the Nightmares, coming from the outside, be able to live in a dream forever? Would the Windfish survive a neverending sleep (it could be, since the final boss talked about living on Koholint forever). And if Koholint and the Nightmares were only a dream, why would the Windfish need Link in the first place? This interpretation of mine could be supported by the perfect ending in which it looks like that the Windfish can indeed create life (Marin becoming a real living being in the form of a seagull). All in all, I believe that Koholint was real during the dream and, as the Windfish said, the real dream will be Link remembering this island. And that the Windfish can create life, making Marin a real living being. What do you think about my interpretation?

There's the interpretation by some fans, that if Link doesn't wake the Wind Fish, the spirit of the hero would stop reincarnating... meaning Hyrule would lose its strongest defender.

I love how much zelda music does with the motifs. A lot of people sleep on zelda music cause it's not grandiose like other games, but the subtlety and small nuances is the exact place it shines. The more you dig into it, the more you get out of it. It's really insane.
@thesaucylorax
@thesaucylorax Ай бұрын
Thats not even entirely true, it has a lot of grandiose songs, maybe a lower ratio than other songs but it has all the different genres or motifs you could want in a game of its nature, and some of the best music in their class or even gaming as a whole. When I read this comment I instantly thought of Colgeras Battle theme, and while sure, the best parts are just a remaster of sorts of Dragon Roost island, it is done so perfectly and is one of the best songs in Zelds in my opinion, and definitely fits the bill for grandiose

@cocolanfofolan2508 Ай бұрын
@@thesaucylorax yeah there are a few each title that fit the description of grandiose. I just dont feel like thats the ones I mostly identify with zelda and the most of the soundtracks are more subtle moodgivers. Also colgera is a boss, I wasnt actually thinking about boss themes when I wrote this. I was solely focused on dungeons tbh. Its not clear from the original post, so sorry for that confusion ;)

One of the things that struck me when I reached Hyrule Castle for the first time in Breath of the Wild is how the main melody that plays eerily reminded me of the melody heard in Southern Face Shrine. I don't know if it's a coincidence, but I took notice of it right away.

I seriously wonder if, behind the scenes, Zelda Music Theory might have wanted to say more about the use of the Leitmotif of the Windfish's Ballad. It's use in the southern Shrine is absolutely on point and the people who know where the story leads will get a little bit of an additional emotional punch because of it. Thanks for this series of Videos, Cap. It is always amazing to see when people point out amazing little details about this game, that managed to hide from me for all these years. Something about the Face Shrine's eyes I like. When you fill in the two lower eyes of the shrine, all that is left are the two indents up above replacing the role of the eyes. And on the left eye is a stream of tears, like as you progress through the dungeon, the neutral face is replaced by a crying face.
@SteveMorris-c2r
@SteveMorris-c2r Ай бұрын
The Face shrine's theme of facing the truth is in perfect contrast to the catfishes maw's theming of lies and deceit. The Shrines lay out is a mix of large and expansive rooms and small tight corridors that mirror your own mental struggles to cope with the truth. The music alludes the the bitter sweetness of finally knowing the truth and the dread of having to cope with that truth. Even the dungeons main obstacle the elephant statues are too large for link to handle. He lacks the strength both physical and emotionally to move forward. The dungeon item being a better power bracelet signifies the strength one needs to move forward after learning the truth. The fact that you can just stumble onto the dungeon item alludes to the fact that one can stumble onto the strength they need with out knowing it. The boss being a face named facade fits perfectly. A facade is a false face of covering. Facade is the last false hood that must be over come in order to reveal the truth and in his dying words the truth is revealed. A harsh truth. Link is a threat to everything on the island. A destructive force outside the whims of the wind fishes dream or the malice of the nightmares. That theme of link being a destructive force and the consequences of his actions carries over into the next dungeon.
@thomaszeh2577

Yet, the only real life forms we can be sure about are the Windfish and Link. It is important that Link carries out the Windfish’s task. One of the owl statues on Koholint makes it clear: If the Windfish sleeps forever, the hero dies. Link has no choice but to save his life and also saving the Windfish. It’s a real tough sacrifice. It makes me emotional all the time despite knowing that there is no other option for Link.

I especially love how you always confess that music theory is not your strong suit, then give an amazingly compelling and thoughtful analysis of how the music affected you, and what it means in the story. It was great, also, bringing in a music theory expert for this video, but while I found his segment enjoyable and informative (and I'm going to check out his channel), I really didn't understand it as much as your own comments. Your insight into the music of Zelda, ungrounded in theory as it is, meets me where I'm at, and serves as a powerful demonstration of how deep and careful a thinker you are.

I still get chills when I listen to it. “Masterpiece” is well-deserved.

@thomaszeh2577 Ай бұрын
@CaptBurgerson I’d like to add that Catfish‘s Maw is where the turnaround of the story is set up, when Link and the player are at the deepest point of this mysterious world, both figuratively and literally. You literally have to dive to get in, and the dungeon is a fish, Link has to be getting swallowed whole and to survive the belly of the beast. Plus, the main mini boss pulls you further into the belly, he has a real feud with Link, pulling him deeper into the beast - a first in the game and fittingly, he guards the hook shot. The music is also special, the tense atmosphere adds to being totally hooked, absorbed by the adventure and is giving an unsettling vibe, hinting at that a grave danger is around the corner, yet not yet seen, until Catfish’s Maw boss the Slime Eel destroys the walls and ground and - while dying - speaks to Link - the first time that a boss speaks while dying and the first time that a boss hints at Link that his quest, this island, are not what Link believes… The unsettling feeling continues and no player could ever drop the game after this boss fight: This whole dungeon is already the (subconscious) beginning of the turning point that continues in the next two shrines - this turning point started in Catfish‘s Maw, right when Link was at the deepest point of this world, a unsettling change is underway… I hope you appreciate these thoughts.

About time you got a new episode up! Face Shrine was indeed quite a turning point in the story. When I first heard this dialogue, I was not assuming what you said here. I was thinking that Link was thinking "Everything will vanish, even me?" So the rest of the game had envisioning Link as dreading the waking of the Wind Fish, fearing his disappearing with Koholint. I know now that he was thinking about losing Marin, but back then when I was in college, this was something that spooked me a bit so I made my own assumptions. ^_^

Definitely a memorable dungeon, especially in the remake. In the remake, pretty much every dungeon has the same theme as from the original game, just remastered. Face Shrine not only received a brand-new addition to its theme, but it ALSO played its original 8-bit theme. It's melancholy, beautiful, sad, mysterious, AND nostalgic all at once. I think the developers knew how important and memorable this dungeon was, especially given what we (and Link) learn in the Southern Face Shrine.

The way the ballad of the Wind Fish is incorporated into nearly all music in the game reminds me of a video essay I saw ("How the music spoils Sweeney Todd") about how the entire soundtrack of Sweeney Todd is based on the first four notes of Dies Irae. It's really interesting to see a sort of parallel, especially because (to my uneducated ears at least), the basic loop of the Face Shrine theme is a bit like an inversion of Dies Irae

My brother argues that narrative does not impact gameplay and that the core gameplay is all that really matters. I disagree, and this dungeon in the context it's in its heavy proof that narrative does elevate games higher than the core gameplay does by itself. By itself, it's a solid dungeon. But the revelation combined with the music and subsequent confirmation takes this dungeon, and the entire game, to a way higher level.

I feel like we don't appreciate how Link finds out about the truth, not at the very end, but at the *beginning* of the end with two more dungeons to go. Like you are FULLY AWARE that continuing this quest will obliterate the very people you're trying to save. The boss monsters even tell you this, rubbing it in your face after you defeat them. I played the OG version of LA back in the late 90s and the southern face shrine, with its very dark-sounding version of Ballad of the Wind Fish, really freaked me out as a kid lol I also really like how it's implied that the monsters are a result of Link's experiences prior to him coming to the island (his fear of LTTP!Ganon coming back, the trauma of a kid having faced what he faced in LTTP). His fears materialized due to the island being a dream of a god-like creature. So Link knows that he can't really stop, saving the island, even if he wanted to stay; the monsters in his past are horrifically powerful, especially when they have materialized in a dreamscape. And anyway, if he didn't complete the quest he would be giving in to his fear, something that Link, the embodiment of courage, could never do. So he's basically caught in a horrible situation of having brought these monsters to the island, and wanting to save the people of the island. But the only way to do that is to end the dream, which will erase the island from existence.

Personal anecdote: I was a young kid when I first played the game, and I kept getting stuck on this dungeon specifically. I had the game in english even though it was available in German (My Dad thought it was a good idea to help me learn english at a young age - he wasn't wrong!) and was JUST shy of being able to understand the "where the eyes have walls" hint, so I kept. getting. stuck. in this one dungeon, put the game down for a month or three and then start over again. I have to emphasize - I did understand the reveal in the south shrine. So for YEARS I 'knew' that it was all a dream, but not how Link would get out and how that would go for the island. Heck I didn't even know what the windfish looked like. Then the DX version came out and I had to get it of course - in German this time, and once I got to that point with the hint (now being in my early teens and a LITTLE smarter than when I first got the game) it IMMEDIATELY clicked that there had to be a bombable wall somewhere and I was able to finish the game with only some minor stumbles (It took me a WHILE to realize I could just move the rooster statue now - HOW are you supposed to figure that out? SERIOUSLY!?) and the ending was all the more emotional for me due to HOW LONG that twist had been 'simmering' in my head. It's my favourite Zelda, nay, my favourite Video Game of all time.

I can't wait until you get to Turtle Rock so you can rip apart that horrific pushcart puzzle, ESPECIALLY the one in the Nightmare Key room. It's one of the ones where the solution was satisfying to figure out but the controls were janky AF. THE SECOND YOU LET GO OF THE D-PAD THE CART BREAKS BUT YOU HAVE TO RAPIDLY PRESS UP DOWN LEFT AND RIGHT SOMEHOW WITHOUT LIFTING YOUR THUMB. The Switch D-Pad was not built for that precise movement, 90% of the time the cart would break but because I was still holding right the second it vanished, I walked straight into a hole right next to me. It took me over twenty attempts to get the key even though I knew the exact solution to the puzzle...

Here's a fun fact, the first time I heard the dungeon theme, it wasn't actually from the game itself, long before the remake obviously. I learned of the song while watching a KZbinr play Zelda Classic, basically a Zelda Maker using the original game's palette and then some. Sooner around the time I learned of PlayR, which is an old website where you could play Gameboy games, which included the three Zelda Gameboy Color titles. This KZbinr played One More Journey, it's a long and tedious game, but one of the later dungeons plays a rendition of this dungeon's track with grandiose crescendos of the Zelda theme and the Wind Fish Ballad, its stuck with me forever, and I still hum that specific tune everytime, which is ironic since I never thought about the original lacking the Wind Fish Ballad, it just subconsciously happens everytime. Then the remake happened, and everything else became history. The dreadful masterpiece blew me away and changed the way I viewed the latter half of the game in its entirety. This is why in the last video of the retrospective I had to emphasize the version exclusives when I mentioned that Catfish's Maw was not my favorite game in the remake, this is where time halts, you feel the raw emotion and panic put upon Link, and you question the fealty, the immense pain and dread that the game's lead you on until this very moment, the reality that is having everything you know and love, erased like it never existed. I just wish the latter two dungeons had kept the snowball rolling instead of running into a brick wall with a face on it.

And that the Windfish can create life, making Marin a real living being. And, on a psychological level, this game’s story is about sacrificing a comfortable fantasy/ thought/ illusion/ dream (or maybe something more loosely related like spending too much time in one’s own head or doomscrolling on social media, instead of moving forward in real life) for the benefit of continuing to live - otherwise, the fantasy slowly kills the real living being(s). What do you think about my interpretation?

In OoS, Facade gains two new attacks, first of which is shooting fireballs into the air and raining them down onto Link, and second of which involves it spawning Beetles to drop from the ceiling. The latter of the two new attacks is most important as it allows you to replenish bombs if you happen to run out. I think the remake's boss fight is much better than the original since Facade moving around the floor adds a new layer of strategy to an otherwise easy boss, but I think if its attacks from OoS were also included it would be a much more enjoyable fight.

This was one of the toughest dungeons I've played other than Turtle Rock in this game. I didn't realize there were less underground passages in this dungeon than Cat Fish Maw. I also think this is the perfect dungeon for the level 2 power bracelet because they didn't want you to have fun in that dungeon.

Listen to the GB version of the theme again. It had an echo that moves in and out of focus. It makes it sound murky, becomes a normal echo, and back. It happens in the dungeon music from face shrine onwards. Link is growing restless along with the dreamer. SUCH a cool detail. Go check it out if you never noticed it.

I played the original game on gameboy, owned by my uncle. I played it a lot, yet the face shrine as well as whatever the last dungeon is called are the 2 dungeons I remember the least. In stark contrast on how you gush about it!

Row, row, Row your boat, Gently down the stream. Merrily merrily merrily merrily... *LIFE IS BUT A DREAM* 😈 Seriously, though. You can hear that in the face dungeon. They knew what they were doing and it's very well crafted as a dungeon theme. As if they really nailing it in as a theme of the game.

Another thing you didn't mention about the eye room puzzle is that the remake also added cracks to the bombable walls. This is a general problem with the remake as a whole. They added cracks to all the bombable walls that were hidden in the Gameboy versions (except for the ones in Key Cavern for some reason). This completely defeats the purpose of these hidden bombable walls and makes certain secrets trivial.

So, when I was twelve, the big plot twist really got me thinking: "Is the Link in this game real within the broader Zelda canon?" I don't think I ever really thought that would be the ending, but just imagining it from Link's perspective: how does he know he's not also a dream and all his memories are just made up by the Wind Fish's subconscious? On a slightly less heavy note, does this mean the similarities between this and A Link to the Past (the presence of Moldorm, Marin looking like Zelda, the quest items in dungeons with maps, compasses, and boss keys) are actually a result if Link's mind influencing the dream world?
@CaptBurgerson
@CaptBurgerson Ай бұрын
I’ve often thought the same on that second point, that Link’s subconscious bleeds into the Wind Fish’s dream, giving a familiar shape to certain things. It could also explain why the nightmare, the final boss, briefly takes on the shape of both Aghanim and Ganon- an echo of Link’s own memories of his past adventures

so the horse heads in LA (GB) are designed to be thrown more like dice. they are based off RNG unlike the remake which made them a puzzle with fixed movements.

The face shrine may actually be my least fave dungeon. It’s not a bad dungeon, just feels a tad disjointed and the item a bit underwhelming (though I only recently the subtle uses of the PB Lv2)

About spoiler alerts: just give them, no matter how old the game is. I'd hate if I didn't know the ending of Karamazov brothers and someone spilled it to me, even if the story is more than 100 years old.

@CaptBurgerson Hi, would a video comparing the designs of ALttP and Link’s Awakening to each other something you might find interesting or enjoyable to do? I love these games, LA is the direct successor of ALttP and these games have both familiarities and great differences which make them both awesome and I would love to see a comparative analysis just out of love and admiration for these masterpieces.

We now inscribe the truth, herein Of Koholint, and of our sin Should thou seek to make thy wish Then thou must wake the fair Windfish But know that should our god awaken Then all who live here shall be taken. This island is not what it seems Here life and land are all but dreams Each sown seed that this land reaps Grows only while the Windfish sleeps. All will persist if thou but stay And let the Windfish sleep away But if thy life thou seek to mend Then Koholint shall meets it end. This is the price that must be paid And thine, the choice that must be made...
