First off, it's not a bad thing to have culture appropriation because it's accepting other cultures and it's called blending the communities together so you sound uneducated. Second, if that's the case, make sure all those black girls that get all that blonde hair. That's our hair. Take that out and it's not racist to say that

honestly tho!!!👏🏽 i’m from nigeria and people are excited to braid a white/mixed persons hair because they find the texture difference interesting and we love to share our culture because our culture isn’t just hairstyles it’s also food, language and most importantly the people, it’s in us. so letting others braid their hair doesn’t mean they’re stealing the culture. my culture is too big and broad to be stolen.

@@bestbest170 What you are describing is called "tourism" -- an industry that economies of African countries financially depend/thrive on by commodifying cultural appreciation. However, let's use your example. . . .Imagine that those white/mixed/foriegn tourists get permission from the gov't to setup shop next to yours, copy African hair-braiding, food stalls, clothes, souvenirs, etc., label their goods as "originals", sell them all cheaper than you while calling yours dirty/inferior. 🤔

So, legitimate question: I’m Indian. Should I be offended when black people use Indian hair for extensions? Should I be offended when black musicians use rhythms originating from India? What about when they use vocal patterns from the very distinct style of singing to come from Arabic and Asian sources? Is it ok for me to rip off guitar licks from Clapton, but not Hendrix? Is it ok for Hendrix to rip off styles from the likes of Ravi Shankar?

the hair used for extensions isn't cultural and you know that. that was hair donated and manufactured and MARKETED towards and for the black community. hence why you see it styled on black women, with African styles. weaves originated in Egypt, which if you are too slow to realize, is in Africa. you're not asking legitimate questions, you're just trying to deflect her point. and idk about you, but we've been producing our own music for centuries...other people are the ones taking notes from us. most k-pop songs are inspired by black artists, so is modern day pop. country music too! we invented that. y'all wanna be big and bad so badly, but time and time again are shut down and silenced. stop trying to use the same ignorant & overused arguments, when they can easily be debunked babe.

I went to the wedding and they all hugged and kissed me. They felt so honored (as did I). In the United States, we are a melting pot of cultures. Actually cultural appropriation does exist, but people are too goddamned stupid to know the right definition of it. Cultural appropriation is as the word describes - the theft of culture. What this can mean is a few things - 1) being prevented from practicing your own culture (think native indians being forced into white schools) - 2) the theft of significant cultural artifacts to be placed in museums overseas. It's not being multi-cultural. That's the difference.

As a black girl, I'm stressed that this conversation is still being had. People who think they own a way of WEAVING HAIR TOGETHER are in need of some serious humbling. Yeah, it may be a common practice within our culture. But that does not mean that people of different racial backgrounds should be chastised and dragged through the mud because they like how the style looks and want to try it out on their hair. We'll never be understood by other races if we keep perpetuating this ignorant unnecessary hatred and wasting our energy on silly arguments like this. If anything, these sorts of videos are damaging the reputation of black people. It's already apparent that people think that we're hostile and petty and this energy makes it far worse. The Babylonians and Egyptians crafted one of the earliest toothbrushes in 3000 - 3500 BC. They used frayed ends of twigs, devices similar to a large toothpick to clean their teeth. The twigs were called “chew sticks”, and they came from aromatic trees, which provided refreshment for the mouth. They found that when they chewed on these sticks, it cleaned their teeth and freshened their breath.

The problem isn’t them wearing the braids. The problems is them taking credit for it by saying the Vikings and Dutch invented braids. All cultures have braids, but certain braids are tied to different cultures. Remember that dashiki trend back in I think 2019? Black Americans were wearing dashiki and then where Americans started.
