This may surprise you, but the ketogenic diet was not originally intended to trim your waist or help you get shredded. Rather, the keto diet was created over a hundred years ago as a way to treat...epilepsy. That's right, this fad diet has humble beginnings as a medical cure for seizures. And it seems to work. How? Well, there's some interesting neuroscience going on, so come along with me and I'll explain what keto does to your brain.

My seizures are infrequently often (once every 1-2 years, sometimes more). I just started keto after hearing about it. I’ve been epileptic for 20+ years now, have tried various medications all to no avail. No scans can determine a cause, nor even catch the activity (after a week long eeg hookup monitoring session). I’m hopeful for keto. I’m just ready to stop having seizures.

I wish they would study this more on adults. Of course it’s hard to get a five year old to drink heavy cream and not good for their developing bodies…but adults have seizures too, we’re less picky, and we aren’t still growing like children. I’m going to ask my doctor about this the next time I see him.

My adult daughter has had seizures since age 7. We are both on the ketogenic diet and her seizures have stopped. Be aware of which neurologist you go to as some are more about the medicine. I'm in process of finding another doctor for my daughter as the one we have is not being supportive of this diet but was willing to prescribe yet another drug that is liver toxic so ongoing liver tests are needed just as with many anti- seizure meds.

Here's what keto does. Keto gets the body into fasting. Fasting keeps the body at rest & in that time, the body heals itself. The nerve cells in the brain that were out of control get rest and repair themselves. I'm an epileptic who's doing keto-carnivore, so think before arguing unnecessarily
@jimstenlund6017

Fasting doesn’t “keep the body at rest” rather it sharpens the mind and human growth hormone is released to maintain muscle so as to be able to go out and find food; resting would equate to death.

I have family doing the Keto diet. I have never tried it, but I did tried fasting for 8 hours. It was hard the first three days, but then I felt amazing. I felt more alert, energetic, less anxious about food, and I started to lose weight so fast I was impressed. I ate whatever I liked, I only held back on the cheese, and it worked for me. I know fasting can help with insulin sensitivity, which is another plus.

Yes, I was on a therapeutic ketogenic diet for seizure prevention for 2 and a half years. It worked, I had no seizures while on keto and I was able to get off my other anti-seizure meds except rescue meds occasionally. But the diet was not sustainable for me, it's side effects caused my co-morbidities to worsen. This was years ago and now I am experimenting with doing short stints of keto (3-6 weeks.) In the epilepsy community we don't use the word "cure" when talking about about the ketogenic diet (and many other treatments.) even though for some children keto does stop completely their seizures, like Charlie Abrams. Sadly some with childhood seizures ended/controlled end up with seizures later in life. As of yet there is no Cure for epilepsy, it is considered a lifelong disease/disorder.

You mentioned kidney stones while on keto. There's a nutrient that is extremely important for cardiovascular, skeletal, brain, and more. The vitamin is k2. K2 has 2 subtypes that are important in this instance. Mk-7 and mk-4. The duty of k2 is to transport calcium from places in the body that it's not supposed to collect in (like arteries after the arterial wound has healed) and take the calcium to places its supposed to be used. Like the skeletal system, teeth, nails, brain, cartilage. Without k2 you'll experience cardiovascular problems (usually blamed on high cholesterol). Cholesterol is used to heal arterial wounds (its broken down to a molecular level and fused with the artery). The artery is partially constructed of cholesterol. Calcium is applied over the cholesterol to protect the wound while it heals. Once the wound is healed the calcium breaks down and is supposed to be taken elsewhere. Unfortunately k2 (MK-4 for brain, mk-7 for teeth, skeletal, cartilage, nails) is only found in fermented foods. Like saurkraut, kimchi, etc. If you go to a Dr and request that they test your k2 levels they will flat out turn you down. K2 is one of many nutrients that hospitals won't check. The RDA for k2 is also ridiculously low. I take twice the serving on a supplement daily and I feel great. K2 will help ileviate arthritis. Inflammation from ligaments rubbing against calcium "spurs". K2 removes the spurs.

Everything about this video is true except for the ending. There are absolutely NOT negative side effects for the ketogenic diet. Before the advent of agriculture humans have been eating ketogenic diets for hundreds of thousands of years. As long as they weren’t eaten by predators or fell off a cliff they lived 80+ years in great health.

Yes there are many side effects! Everything she mentioned is correct. It recks the stomach and bowls! And triggers gastritis in so many people which can lead to stomach cancer. Please don’t encourage people if you don’t know all the facts. I did this diet years ago and it messed me up big time! And another thing people will argue and say that we used to eat berries and nuts. Everyone says different things according to what they like and then brand it fact! @@recoveringsoul755 Yes. I have read the studies the video is referring to. Patients consumed much less protein than RDA (0.8g/kg/day), if I remember right, less than 15% of total energy came from proteins. Even the RDA recommendation is too low, increasing protein intake has yielded good results especially with the elderly who tend to get nasty hip fractures. Just stay between 1-2g protein/kg/day, too much in unnecessary. Bodybuilders may eat even more, but they do a lot of unreasonable and unhealthy stuff anyway, not really an example to follow.

There’s a whole nutrition war on this. Like you mentioned hypoglycaemia or low blood sugar that is caused from well eating too much sugar that spikes insulin. But on a low carb diet your insulin stays low (why it’s an easy/affordable way to reverse type 2 diabetes). Your body is also capable of making all the glucose that it needs from protein. If you want to dive into the science of why a ketogenic diet is safe for most people go see a channel called low carb down under. Sticking to the diet is a bit tough in the beginning when you are used to eating highly processed food with a high carb content. Personally I have found that following this diet significantly reduces brain fog and has reduced depressive bouts. As I have ADHD it has helped me to reduce the overall mental health burden in my day to day functioning

I've done keto and I'm doing again now. I'm 6'4 and was 94kg, I lost 11kg in 8 weeks on keto, I wasn't carlorie counting but was/am intermittent fasting alongside it. I maintained my weight loss post- keto but a skin condition came back that completely disappeared when I was on keto, so I am back on it to see if it goes away again - I imagine I will get even more lean during the process. It's cruicial that one researches about how to do keto; for example, you have to eat A LOT more salt than you're used to because your body becomes so efficient at flushing it out. Eating lots of green, fibrous veggies and healthy fat sources like salmon, olive oil, and avacado and you will feel amazing, but don't skimp on the salt! Supplementation of things like magnesium, potassium and other electrolytes may also be important.

The ketogenic diet only works when you're getting all of the nutrition that the body requires. This means animal fat for energy and animal protein for proteins. Carbs are unnecessary. Seizures occur as a result of excess electrical activity in the neural pathways of the brain. AKA electrolytes collide with one another and the result is electrical activity. Too much electrical activity results in headaches, migraines, Seizures, tremors, etc. Too little electrical activity results in impaired cognition function (this includes brain fog, attention problems, memory issues, diseases like dementia, mood imbalances, etc). The 2 electrolytes that are impacted by 2 of the 3 anticonvulsant categories are sodium and calcium. 1 anticonvulsant category blocks sodium from entering the neural pathways (that's not a good thing). The 2nd category blocks calcium from entering the neural pathways (also not a good thing). The body has a way of balancing your electrical activity without the use of anticonvulsants. This function is by using potassium to balance out the electrical activity. Think of the neural pathway as a wire and the electrical activity is electricity. The potassium is a grounding station. As long as you have at least twice as much potassium as you have sodium and calcium (individually), you won't have excessive electrical activity. I'm epileptic and I'm on Carnivore. Keto won't last long due to the damages done to your gut from constant consumption of pharmaceuticals. Eventually you won't be able to consume carbs. Also anticonvulsants wreak havoc on your hepatic system. Pharmaceuticals aren't bioavailable. Since they're 100% synthetic the liver treats them as toxins. But the dosage that's taken usually twice daily is more than the liver can metabolize each time. The excess toxins build up in the body and some are stored in fat cells throughout the body especially in the liver.

I do the Keto diet 5 months per year in summer time. It helps to calm down, digestion and focus. My seizures are controlled with phenytoin so I cannot say if Keto diet helps my seizures. Keto diet makes me feel cold so I do it in the summer. It takes electrolytes out so I supplement with potassium, magnesium, natrium and chloride. Fasting + Keto helps me loose weight, about 15kg per year which I gain back in the winter months. Phenytoin raises my liver gamma GT, I actually had normal liver value while on Keto diet.

Long-term usage of high level of glucose for energy in the brain causes deterioration of the neural pathways that transport memories. The brain prefers using ketones for energy. Plus ketones have a restorative effect of the brain. Memory loss over time is due to deterioration of the neural pathways. This implies that dementia and other memory conditions can be reversed.

People must avoid plant oxalates. I think plants are very unhealthy for most of us. I'm epileptic and I've gone carnivore because I tried plant based and not only did it make my seizures worse, it almost killed me. Carnivore has positively reversed that and more. That and fasting. There is nothing wrong with a keto diet, there's no need for a Dr to get involved with it either.. all you're doing is regulating your protein and fat and eating very low to zero carbs. Nothing wrong with it at all.

The good news for you though, there are ways to do keto as a vegetarian! I'm not switching what's working for me but have a friend who's managing her seizures with vegan keto. You may want to research this if useful for you to try for yourself. Her meals always look amazing compared to my plates of measured meat and fats.

Since your brain is two thirds fat, it seems to me that something is going in the right direction. It sure as hell doesn't need much sugar. In fact NONE. Glucose, yes, but very little indeed.

Has anyone here ever tried vegan Keto Diet ? This could be very promising !

What you need is a good source of energy, and that comes from saturated long chain fatty acids. Id suggest you have some ethical grass fed butter in there otherwise you have to rely on coconut and cocoa butter. Avocados, nuts and veg oils are not sufficient.

I checked out your book but I don’t buy books with your format because they aren’t user friendly.

Hey Les! Thanks for the feedback. Can you explain what you mean by "not user friendly"?

They're available as kindle and hardcover. Are both formats user unfriendly? Nearly all book are released as hardcovers .

In order to use a book it is much easier to be able to copy parts of it in order to do more research for one thing your book format doesn’t allow that.

You can convert Kindle books to standard .epub format using tools like Calibre with DeDRM plugin, there are guides online on how to do it

Hey! Just saw your comment. Can you explain what you mean by the book being hard to read if people aren't subscribed to us? We've been told by many that they were surprised by how accessible it was and we wrote it intentionally so that anyone above about fifth grade could read it, so I'd be curious if you have any examples of what you're talking about.

It's not a cure, the only thing that can cure epilepsy is brain surgery. It's a treatment.

I'm sorry, I fail to see how you suffer constipation from a diet that is so high in fat. That should make any food slide through your bowel. If anything it will do the opposite. As someone on the keto diet and constantly consume cream I can assure you, that's what happens.
