When I was a toddler, I had a beanie baby crab that I had simply named "Crabby". I loved that crab so so much, never knew what happened to him. A very specific memory that I have of my time with Crabby though was when I had thrown a tantrum, I don't remember why, but I was holding Crabby and had angrily tossed him to the floor only to be knocked out of my fit of rage into profound sadness as I immediately felt I had hurt my friend, and went from crying over not getting my way into crying over the idea that this cheap, plush crab had felt pain - pain that *I* inflicted upon him.

I definitely feel very attatched to my toys. As someone who was confronted with the concept of death VERY early in life, seeing my friends have siblings to talk to, play wirh, love, and grow up with made me feel lonely that I lost all 6 of mine. And having a father who has an addiction and basically being taught from commercials and health class that the addiction would kill him, my toys are everything to me. I lost my siblings, I'm seeing the health of my grandparents declining rapidly, and knowing that my dad could get lung cancer any day now, my toys are the family that I lack. I still have most of my toys to this day, and they still bring me all the comfort and happiness they did back then.

That last part hit hard, damn. I was that lonsy child and to this day I put a lot of toys in my artwork as a metaphor for how that loneliness has followed me throughout my life. A part of why I do this also connects to the fact that as a kid when doing art studies I mostly choose my toys as a subject to draw, no friends or family but my toys.

Consumerism in itself isn't bad though, as it depends on the context I like to thing Are you buying toys for them to leave you alone? I would say that is a bad form of consumerism Are you buying a toy because your kid genuinly is interested in that product in particular? That is good Honest, even if consumerism is bad, we still do it, although without noticing at times Like buying a car because you like it (and it fixes something, two birds with one stone), or you decide to take a trip somewhere because you like that place I wouldn't put the blame of kids being interested in the hotest products, in fact, it is them at times that create the biggest ones Binny Babies became a fad due to adults investing on them to sell them back, the Cabage Pale Kids became a fad because Kids loved them, and the concept as a whole Hope your kids are doing fine honestly, I am sure you are a great father, and I can see and somewhat agree about your take on consumerism

I worked at a toy store over Christmas when hatchimals were a thing. The amount of people constantly asking if we had them was tiresome, literally asked 50 times a day. We barely had them in stock. When 40 came in one morning they never made it to the shelves as we had 100 people queuing up overnight. 6 months later, we had loads in, couldn’t get rid of them. Even when they dropped to half the price. This was an awesome video!

This was a very interesting, sad, and also beautiful video. I nearly had tears when talking about Regal. I too have felt the same way and still do as an adult. Thank you for this video. However, the end left me feeling slightly sad at the concept of a toy 'filling gaps' for lonely kids. So I'd like to add something: I had a very happy childhood. I was home educated due to being autistic (although we didn't know that at the time) and finding school extremely challenging. I had a loving family and some very loyal lovely friends who understood me that are still my friends to this day. I had no reason for a toy to "fill in the gaps" per say. However, I had so much love to give. And not just because of my hyper-empathy (a common, lesser-known trait in autistics); and I think this is true of many children actually. And an interactive, loveable toy provides an outlet for that - no strings attached. You can hug when you want, love it when you need, and it'll never need anything else in return. I think that is a toy's greatest strength; it's love, but at the child's discretion. Sorry this was lengthy; excellent video

Faults *and strengths.* I think that's part of why the last part did hit so hard. I see a lot of videos that are just 'capitalism bad' or 'unthinkingly consume product'. It's rare to have someone acknowledge the complexities of a system that produces both joy *and* suffering.

Through this video I kept thinking about a smaller-scale toy rush that happened late last year for the Gundam Aerial model kit from Mobile Suit Gundam: the Witch From Mercury. The kit would sell out so fast that store employees started filling shelves that were _supposed_ to be full of Aerial kits with a brand of chips that also happened to be called "Aerial," and this ended up leading to an actual cross-promotion with special Aerial chip flavors based on characters from the show. In contrast, two villain suits from the show, the Dilanza and Michaelis, piloted by characters who, at the time, were generally seen as asshole scrubs, had trouble getting _off_ the shelves-- some stores would give you a free Dilanza kit with any purchase of an Aerial kit just to get rid of them, and there are pictures of stores literally stacked to the ceiling with unbought Michaelis kits. The reason this example stood out to me was because _The Witch From Mercury_ happens to revolve around a mother who kills thousands of people and tries to rewrite the actual universe just to make her kid happy, and furthermore the Gundam Aerial herself is somewhat unique in that her pilot, the show's protagonist, thinks of her like a sister, and the show makes a pretty big deal out of the strong familial bond between this shy country girl and her giant robot sister. The robot even has pronouns. _Pronouns!_ Aerial isn't an "it," she's a "she!" And most fans didn't even realize that the robot really _was_ sentient at that point. And I truly think the fact that the robot, despite functionally being just like any other giant robot in any other anime, is treated so much like a character was the main driver of the model kit's popularity. The sleek and slightly cute design didn't hurt, but even kits like the Demi Trainer, which looks like a green trash can with arms and legs, sold incredibly well because the characters who piloted them were beloved by fans of the show. I dunno, your whole point about how love is the primary driver of demand for these christmas fad toys and about how capitalism exploits that love for profit (also a major theme in the show) just made me remember that whole situation. There were no riots, the model kits were aimed at a generally older audience than most of the toys in this video, and were generally bought by the people who would be building them rather than parents, but there are parallels nonetheless, and I think that's really fun.
@JettKuso
@JettKuso 7 ай бұрын
There’s even a good parallel between Gundams in general and toys. Most factions wanting to use them for profit and war, and the protags wanting to do something good to help people in need. I finish gwitch not long before starting this script so it coulda been an inspiration! Also it’s funny cause I have an Aerial kit on my Christmas list lol

Honestly the last part with your Regal hit harder than i expected. I have a very similar story with my plush animal, a little orange and white Ty cat I named Kitty. I've had her for nearly my entire life, take her on every trip, and hell, she's still near my bed every night even tho im 22 now. Kitty (and her "sister", a smaller white beaniebaby kitten IttyBitty) has been my best friend for as long as I can remember. I was never lonely as a child. My parents (and Kitty) were all the friends i needed. The thought of ever letting go of her fills me with a sense of dread and remorse that i dont think i can properly put into words. I have started to let go a little.. and i think thats why your story of your plushy friend nearly broke me. Im starting to drift away from my oldest friend. Thank you for helping me realise that. Imma go cuddle Kitty now lol

Well done. **Side Note** I felt the emotion you had to hold back while telling the story of your 15 yr old doggo. I lost 2 pups in the last 2 years (one of which was MY first pet). BUT, just like yours, mine were in their mid teens and had lived a long healthy and happy life. So it wasn't too difficult to accept it and move forward. I have no idea how you were able to go from your 1st pets story into a strong statement on consumerism in the very next sentence. Working at a Toys R Us during the holiday season of 2015, I think there were 3 crazes going on, Lego Dimensions with the expansion sets, Skylanders and Nintendo Amiibos. Working in the electronics section was pure hell seeing those games/toys fly off the shelves and even more disappointed parents of course asking if we had more in the "back". In a way, those parents were like my own back in the day when I wanted beast wars toys, so I guess every generation will always have a crazy fad to surpass the previous ones.

The summer of 2008, my birth year, i got a grey striped cat plushy with white belly paws and face by my grandmother. He has been with me for 15 years now. He means more to me than anything else i have in my possession. His name is Figaro. One time, me, my brother and my mom were out shopping at a second hand store. There i found another cat plushie, the same as Figaro. When i came home with it, it reminded me of all the great memories i had with Figaro. And how much he's aged. Another time, his chin got a hole in it. My mother had to sowe it shut, and i still remember putting a bandaid on it for him to "heal". It was very therapeutic for me to hug him when i was sad. I know my English is a bit broken, and it doesn't all make sense what i just said, but i just wanted to tell you about Figaro. When I was younger, I loved Sonic. Every Saturday morning, I watched SonicX and even managed to watch the whole show, every single episode of every season I watched and loved. One year for Christmas my mom got me a Sonic plushie, and a mini Tails plushie. I played with them a lot, and carried Sonic around a lot. And after watching Toy Story many times, I wrote my name under one of Sonic's shoes just like Andy did with Woody. And for a long time, I played with Sonic, and tails, I even remember recording videos on an old phone that I got, and watched the fun little adventures I made with my plushies. I actually still have Sonic, and tails to this day, and they sit on my shelf where I look at them, and even pick them up every once in a while, and look back on the times I played with them, watched SonicX, Sonic Boom, and even watching Sonic related content like on Balena Productions. Even if I don't play with them as much anymore, they still hold many memories that shaped my life. Even if I moved on to other things like FNaF, or anything else, I still hold a place in my heart for the toys that I had many adventures with that would last forever

I also had, or still actually have my beloved childhood plush. It's a small, happy meal plush Pug who I called as "Mopsio" (Puggy). I used to take him e v e r y w h e r e, often putting him peaking from a shirt pocket, even at the school ceremonies. As far as I remember, he's still somewhere with other plushies and I need to find and reunite with him. He's not only a toy, dude's a small plush friend. I had a lot of toys, but it was this one happy meal plush that took my heart

Bloody amazes me that, without the craze for Cabbage Patch Kids, there wouldn't have been a backlash, and thus, the Garbage Pail Kids wouldn't have been born. Little gross stickers that were a highlight of my childhood wouldn't have existed except for such a bizarre fluke of doll insanity. EDIT: Oh God, Chucky wouldn't exist either, would he!?
