The International Airlines Group (BA, Iberia, AerLingus, Level) dumped seats and frequencies on top of Norwegian. Especially in the San Francisco Bay Area. There was no way to compete. It gave us a window on what the 787 was capable of doing on long thin routes.

Yes... It was shocking that a RT flight to Europe cost less than to fly up to Seattle or other west coast cities.

I might be in the minority here, but I won't shed any tears that Norwegian failed. Yes, it brought upon lower fares to some markets but it caused service to deteriorate across the entire industry. In an effort to compete, other airlines dropped fare and dropped service at the same time. While bearable for short routes, it was very difficult for long routes. Of my business travels, I noticed a correlation to drop of service at other airlines to an unacceptable level in an effort to win a price war, even impacting those customers that are not very price sensitive.
@stabiz85553 жыл бұрын
This is kind of silly, most airlines would've failed if they didn't get financial help. Even Lufthansa had to be saved by the German government.

Although their financial musical chairs was always risky, and may have scuppered them eventually, you do have to feel sorry for Norwegian that three massive problems in a row that were completely out of their control / no fault of their own came along. 787 groundings > 737Max groundings > COVID.

They won't be using the Max, decision was taken by the management and Boeing contract allowed to be cancelled by the judge overseeing the bankruptcy protection process in Ireland court. They've also sued Boeing in the US and outcome is still pending. Not sure if for one billion usd. Last I read was that US judge was more sided towards the airline's arguments. I for one do hope they survive. Maybe their maths was wrong, but it was a customer friendly and service oriented company. You got what you paid for and were free to buy extras or not. No shoving in your face constantly so you do. Free WiFi too. It was a freedom of choice airline.

Long haul, low cost doesn’t work. Plain and simple. Transcontinental routes live, grow and die by premium business travel. It will be years before transcontinental routes that weren’t the fattest cash cows will return, if ever. The possibility of permanently reduced business travel will mean less routes, less frequencies, and higher ticket prices for the rest of us.

The Major issue began with Boieng and their Rolls & Royce engines!!! The airline had to call some leasing companies to operate the flights and some Dreamliner's were returned to Seattle to be fixed!! Expansion plan was totally compromised! Meanwhile, March 2019, MAX issue, forces 18 aircraft to be grounded immediately till now affecting the entire network, routes and fleet. Besides all that, the huge pressure from the competition!! BA (IAG) hated Norwegian, the airline that took more pax in 2019 between London and New York than no other, SAS hated Norwegian, having to deal with a direct competitor in long haul routes from Scandinavia that never happened before, USA airlines hated Norwegian, being the first official long haul low cost carrier on a Transatlantic routes changing the game rules they were used to and IB hated Norwegian with basically the same reasons, afraid of losing their monopoly business for low cost market. Covid-19 was definitely the Game Over unfortunately for the company! However, I still real hope they will not sell all the 787 fleet and in the future they could be able to return again to the skies with some routes!

@@JAMESFERNANDEZ It DOES matter James. Engine specific problems are always going to need to be looked at by the ENGINE manufacturer; especially when components are wearing faster than expected for all planes with a specific engine. Norwegian could've avoided that issue of they picked GE engines, which didn't have any problems. But because they're used to working with RR engines, it was cheaper to avoid retraining maintenance personnel for a different manufacturer. It's important to understand the difference between airframe and powerplant issues. And you apparently think Boeing is in charge of whatever RR does with their engines, showing you have little understanding of the process.
