I don't get why the filmmakers expected us to sympathise with this film's version of Eric and Shelly. They're drug addicts enabling each other's addictions and bring their deaths on themselves so you don't care if Eric comes back to avenge them. Whereas in the original they were an innocent couple about to get married and killed by gangsters trying to force them out of their home.

As someone who finally bit the bullet and watched the movie because of 2024 coming out, have not seen the 2024 one and will only see that via being a pirate, The Crow is such a contained story that even the 2024 one being named the way it is... People are still going to treat the original as the original. The sequels, for all their faults, have their own identities. 2024 will only ever have an identity as a shade of the original, a shallow cash grab that did not understand its original source material of the comic or why the original movie worked the way it did. I'll thank 2024 for one thing, I was afraid to watch the original Crow. Because I wanted to keep such a cultural movie alive I insisted on being one of those who joined in watching The Crow rather than 2024.

@@athannyx6815 Thats kind of the only silver lining of this whole thing. Each respective crow is genuinely its own self contained story/concept. with only i think like 1 or two exceptions outside of referencing. @thefallencog sincerely i liked City of Angels, i'll see on salvation and the less we say on wicked prayer the better. I think the real problem is the sequels are not allowed their own identities tone wise. But i love self contained anthologies. I don't think new crow stories that aren't Eric's story are bad. I think 2024 is bad precisely because it tries to readapt the comic Eric story again and misses all themes and nuance. But then i really like the concept of a short lived undead taking revenge while having to cope with their unnatural existence. I will give the new film a little credit, it does look good, like its shot well and looks decent but id trade in a good looking fim for a film with a style in mind like the OG crow any day of the week. Also whats with this need to make eric and shelly these "broken and misunderstood criminals of circumstance" that hollywood likes trying to keep perpetuating, the great sadness about the original crow is that Eric and Shelly were good people that had friends they looked out for and who wanted to start a family, they were nice people but not overtly, they were nice people but in a realistic way and they absolutely did not deserve to have what happened to them happen, its why i always feel a rush of catharsis when we watch that scene of him becoming the crow and i just love it when he punches that mirror, so good, shattering his old self to set right the wrong. But the modern pair were like "we are drug addicts and petty criminals but you can't judge us cause we had a hard life" which is annoying as all hell

With these characters I don’t buy their romance… comes off more as a Romeo & Juliet. Also get a feeling that 2024 everyone is selfish (1994 Shelly fights for the tenants or their building and Eric basically saves Sarah & Darla). As I have zero interest I’ll take what you said about the ending as fact that they end up resurrected when all is done. Wtf! With the comic and 1994 movie you’re griped with the dual feeling that justice was served but at a cost of everything.

I'm all for a differing take on a story. The 1994 film departed quite a bit from the original comic itself. Its characters, flow, setting (visually), and over all feel were VERY different. The journey through each were like reading a darker Hemmingway story (comic) vs. Edgar Allen Poe (1994 film). The attachment you feel to Eric and his mission feels very different in each And you walk away from each feeling a very different sort of finality. BOTH were successful in conveying what they set out to do, and neither leaves you saying, "Wait, what?" I think you say it perfectly. The strengths and incredible beauty of the comic and the 1994 film are completely absent in this new take. It completely missed connecting with either, and it presents nothing new that either adds to the franchise or honors it. It was not with nostalgia but with honest intrigue that I viewed this 2024 telling. I think the source material is presented in such a way that it could still be taken successfully and most artfully in a number of novel directions. This one, however, was not one of them. In its attempt to be edgy and modern, it was simply unsympathetic and gratuitously violent. Its moral and aesthetic was completely lost.

We really need a Borderlands/Crow crossover. A movie so horrifically bad the entire fabric of reality collapses in upon itself, and Rupert Sanders can't make any more films.

Honestly, wished they did something new. Maybe a female Crow, there could still be a love story, but change it up. A daughter & father A sister & brother/sister Maybe between friends

@@fonztorres You are aware that the comics have a female Crow right? Her name is Iris Shaw. That’s the fun of the Crows sequel novels, it’s anyone who’s been wronged. Honestly man, it seems like you don’t know what you’re talking about at all and maybe you need to genuinely gain some knowledge first
@rockoakira78044 ай бұрын
@@fonztorres but that’s not the point, if that was brought up earlier, then sure, great. But it wasn’t, all this dude said was “hey, I think a Female Crow could be cool” and you INSTANTLY went to go “No, we don’t need anymore unnecessary gender swapping” like bro? Also my man, the fact that’s your response before the topic of “forced diversity” even gets brought up tells people what they need to know, I hate to say.

Oh no, not a woman... Because today's filmmakers would definitely make her a strong and independent lesbian... Although it probably wouldn't have made the film any worse. Everything is bad there anyway.

As a complete lover, almost creep of the original Crow, what I tell people is that this movie was done great. You have to think that the writers went complete off the cuff with a whole new concept, with many ideas taken from the original. When you watch the remake, you have to completely forget that you’ve ever seen the original and go into it as a completely new slate and a completely new movie. It’s hard to do, I know. It took a couple times watching it to separate myself from Brandon and the new one. The original is undefeated, but they didn’t do bad by this one. The gore is awesome. I’ll leave y’all with this: Just got a new Crow tattoo on the left side of my upper back-shoulder, showing The Crow on Brandon’s shoulder with the words reading, “It can’t rain all the time.”

Any adaptation of James O’Barr’s The Crow after the first film in the 90s starring Brandon Lee are soulless, cash-grab dumpster fires. The Crow was a deeply personal and emotional work of art for O’Barr. The fact that Brandon Lee unfortunately passed away while filming the movie sent him into a depression. There simply is no other way of putting it.
@Mia-dt3gl4 ай бұрын
In defense of The Crow: City of Angels, they _did_ try to make a different story (with the blessing of O’Barr). But then Harvey Weinstein interfered and forced reshoots and made them cut a LOT of scenes that ruined the continuity of the movie. There’s an unofficial director’s cut floating around somewhere, but I’ve only seen short clips of it.

I was hoping this movie would be good, but I won’t waste my money on it. I will watch it in the future, but once it’s free somewhere. It’s been many years since I watched The Crow from 1994, but one thing I always remembered was how Eric’s relationship with Shelly impacted him as the Crow. Her absence in his “life” and the injustice of their murders. Also, Eric’s emotional struggles, how he deals with the loss of Shelly and who he is after her death and his resurrection. These struggles, at least to me, are what made the movie from 1994 more “alive” and memorable. Combined with Brandon Lee’s performance, it was art. They totally trashed what makes Eric and Shelly’s story special, and the motivator for Eric’s return. If it was up to me, this is how the story would go: I would totally make Eric a flawed person, that struggles with his own past demons (be it from childhood that was bad, or some event that shaped him). But once he meets Shelly, everything changes. In my story, Shelly is the paragon of light in Eric’s life, helping him heal from his issues and make him become a better person, that can see the good in people, even if the world is falling apart around them, while creating this beautiful relationship between them. Both Eric and Shelly bring something that is missing in each other lives. Once someone finds a love like that, they feel like it’s forever, that nothing will tear them apart. In my mind, Eric would feel this way towards his relationship with Shelly. But because Shelly is the paragon of light, this would attract the opposite in their lives, leading to their murders. Once Eric returns from the dead, and knows that their killers are still free because of the police corruption, he knows why he is back to deliver justice/revenge to those that murdered him and Shelly. During his journey to seek revenge, Eric could struggle with his grief for Shelly, clouding how he should deliver his revenge. For example, should all those involved in the murder die, or some of them deserve redemption? Shelly’s influence on Eric could also bring "problems" to Eric, because he wants revenge, but Shelly always believed that some people deserved second chances, redemption, so Eric finds himself “trying to understand” who deserves what kind of justice/revenge, because he still wants to make Shelly proud of him, even in death. Eric could also go through the stages of grief: Denial of what happened to him and Shelly, anger towards himself for failing to protect Shelly, bargaining for Shelly’s soul that she’ll be able to come back to life (which she doesn’t because she’s dead and her soul moved on), depression leading him to lose himself in his quest for revenge where he “figures it out” that not everyone involved in their murders deserves the same fate (which I would totally make some of them being forced to be there at Eric and Shelly's murders), and acceptance of what happened to him and Shelly. This could lead to the same conclusion of the movie from 1994 and graphic novel, with Eric and Shelly’s souls reuniting in the afterlife, or could go the other way, with Eric accepting his soul might not be with Shelly’s. I know my take might not be as good, but in my mind, they could have done something to at least make the relationship between Eric and Shelly believable. For what I have seen in many videos reviewing this movie, this new The Crow movie seems to forget that Eric is a guy in grief, that lost the love of his life. But the relationship with Shelly is so bland in this movie that it doesn’t even make sense for him to return at all.

I won't watch it. Ever. If you're going to tarnish the memory of Brandon Lee you had better make it worth it. Of course they didn't. They spit on his grave and disrespected the fans. The crow should bring Brandon back to get revenge on everyone involved with this atrocity.

Brandon Lee was so convincing, in part, because he was physically more able to handle the role. As said in this review, this version relies on his immortality. Brandon Lee's character was simply a badass. Lee was skilled physically to make it look like he could win the confrontations whether he was immortal or not. In the first vengeance murder when he kills Tin Tin he didn't even need to be immortal. He literally deflected and caught the knives without even being touched. Of course it was fake but Lee and his stunt doubles moved in a way to make it seem like he was just vicious with or without being immortal.

The funny thing is that the game play in Dmc was as solid as ever and the level design was actually pretty imaginative, but yeah, the writing was fairly abysmal, even by video game standards. The original Dante somehow managed to avoid seeming overly cringy despite being camp as hell.

I'll say this, because I'm sick of the bias comments and reviews. THE SOURCE MATERIAL FOR THIS FILM IS THE NOVEL, NOT THE COMICS. Stop thinking it is. O'barr even worked on this and stated it was based on his novel. That being said, it was still horrible. He could of used any other crows such as Josh, for this versions Crow. I know he wanted to stay in line with his novel using Eric and Shelly, but thats the reason his novel failed as well.

This remake is just sad. It could never get close to the original. I remember when The Crow came to theaters. I must have went to the theater five or six times to watch it. I just couldn't get enough. The Crow is one of the few movies that came back to the theater here, due to popular demand. Now, watching the Crow is a tradition. I watch it each year at Halloween. RIP Brandon! It is a shame you couldn't see what would be the masterpiece of The Crow.

The reason Eric and Shelly are so compelling in the OG movie is because they were good, normal people. Two dumb young kids in love, taking care of a little girl in need, planning their wedding. Even while living in the slums. And we never see too much of their relationship, just enough to see the kind of people they were. Especially Shelly. We didn’t see much but just from what we do see and what Eric and Sara say, we know Shelly was a loving, good natured, sensitive, strong willed person who was well loved by those in her life. Someone who deserved to have a long and happy life. We barely see much and yet it’s just enough to want revenge just as much as Eric.

I really like the remake and I think it’s quite pathetic to make such a big deal out of this, it’s not like they will replace to original it’s just a new remake to make a old banger more modern and honestly they made it really good and many ppl loved the movie so please stop saying that everyone hates it when it really isn’t true at all it would be a real shame if they had to delete the remake just cuz some ppl can’t move forward in the modern world.

Some movies just shouldn't be remade, The Crow is one of them. The amount of passion, loss, grief and healing that's tied into the OG movie... Okay sure make a sequel, but to claim to remake the first movie is gross and no one wants to see it, let alone you thinking you can do anything better. At all. Please.

I really tried with this one. I tried to watch it on its own merit, without comparing it to the original. Even then, it's just a slow, boring slog. I couldn't find a reason to care about Eric or Shelley. The bad guys were just dull and flat. Ignoring the original Crow this is just a bad movie. In a word, it's forgettable. And when you do compare it to the original it's even worse.
