I think part of this show is Bucky learning how different Sam's perspective of living in America as a black man is from his experience as a white man. Bucky was born in the early 1900s and then was frozen and brainwashed until the current day, so he still has a lot to learn about the true nature of America as he finally is exposed to it outside of the contexts he's used to. I think this is part of why Bucky couldn't posssibly understand why Sam wouldn't take the shield and he is going to come to understand why taking on the title of Captain America is conflicting for Sam.

In a social context, imagine the people that Hydra ordered to execute for opposing or simply fighting against Nazi ideas. And Bucky was an instrument of that organization. That's deep, man! And I feel sad for him having to live with all these memories and confront reality.

pnut3844able in a perfect world it would be nice since Steve and Bucky were best friends, but (1) Bucky has got wayyyy to much trauma he needs to deal with before taking on something like that, (2) why would people trust a guy who was an assassin (even tho it wasn’t his choice) for decades to be Captain America (3) imagine how it would look to make it seem like Sam, a black man who is MORE than qualified for the role, will become the new captain America and instead give it to another white dude that Steve didn’t even choose?

@@jocelynvalentino7319 the micro-nuances of Stan's acting are phenomenal! In this episode, even though Bucky tries to put on this persona of snarky confident guy, you can see his doubt, guilt and fear bleading through. Even if Steve wasn't there physically for him since Helicarrier fight, he had a constant presence in his mind - in a way, Steve's trust in Bucky's better nature is what helped Bucky to return to normality and overrride his programing. So to find out that Steve's trust in him might be misplaced - the only thing that truly ground him in reality - could feel like the ground falling from underneath your feet. I've seen it mentioned that Bucky pulls his punches in this episode and I have to agree - he's terrified to use his strength to his full potential because he's adraid of the type of man he'll become in his violence.

Nah the douche who creeps on Peggy wasn't the perfect soldier either, he is just a bully. I think walker is capable of being a good man, but he likely see his duty as being the 'perfect soldier' and that is what is expected of him by both the government and the public. The government has rarely see eye-to-eye with Rogers and the public may love Rogers, they are far from understanding his motivations. As far as they are concern, Rogers is the perfect soldier instead of just a good man. Which is why Walker risk becoming more aggressive and desperate to show results, since it is already implied he feels the need to live up to 'expectations'.

Yes. Walker is a good soldier, but with a Tony Stark personality type. Stark, while usually meaning good, was responsible for a ton of the problems we've seen in the MCU because he was so reactionary and usually displayed a much more black/white view of situations That said, Sam and Bucky have been the emotional, reactionary, unrealistic, problem causing forces in this show so far. We know why, but as things stand, Walker is showing he's more deserving of the title than either of them so far.

Isaiah Bradley was the actually the first black Captain America in the comics and his story was based on the Tuskegee Experiments the military did on Black people in real life. Isaiah was the only survivor out of 300 African Americans the military did experiments on when they were trying to recreate the super soldier serum in Project Rebirth after Steve went on ice but he was than discarded, locked up and forgotten to history and his story came out back in 2003 in the comic The Truth: Red, White and Black. (The MCU always does their own adaptations of the comics and they appear to have made Isaiah Bradley a Korean War Vet than a WWII vet) His story if y’all are interested is heartbreaking but even more important to the legacy of the shield and the mantle of Captain America and fun fact his grandson Elijah Bradley who we also saw open the door for Bucky and Sam is the future co leader of the Young Avengers and his alias is Patriot White Wolf is a different character in the comics by the name of Hunter but the MCU are giving that title to Bucky. White Wolf is the adopted brother for Shuri and T’Challa in the comics and leads the Hatut Zeraze (Wakandan Secret Police)

Yes. At last someone who has done the research and reading. I wouldn’t mind if Isaiah was the first cap. But it’s not factually accurate. Steve became Captain America in 1941 and Isaiah was experimented on in 1942. Both dates are taken straight from the pages of the comics. By having Isaiah first would also have connotations for characters like doctor Erskine and others as they would have been involved. Changing everything they stood for. I also noticed the change to Korean War for Isaiah. This would mean he would have been either created later or that he was active for longer. As the comics version of the character was locked up after completing what was supposed to be a suicide mission for stealing one of Caps suits. Eli also gets permanent super soldier abilities from a blood transfusion with Isaiah. Before that he was taking pills for super strength.
@KevinLopez-dm2tb

@@martindavies6258 yeah and from what we now know in the MCU’s adaptation of Isaiah Bradley is that the suicide mission the government had him go on was to kill the Winter Soldier. I have the SAME thoughts exactly! Winter Soldier is Bucky’s HYDRA persona. He is not that anymore, but he still views himself as the monster HYDRA made him. This story is about Sam learning that he IS the perfect person to take up the shield, but it is also about Bucky learning that he IS NOT the Winter Soldier. He is James Buchanan Barnes, and maybe he will take up the name of the White Wolf.

Emotional and messed up. ****SPOILERS FOR THE COMIC****Steve was already Captain America. The experiment on the African American Soldiers was from when they were trying to recreate the super solider serum. Bradley and 5-6 others survived the experiment. They all died in service except for Bradley. Bradley was arrested because he stole a Captain America costume before going on a mission. Steve is told the story by Bradley’s wife. Steve and Isaiah meet and Steve gives Isaiah his old torn up Captain America suit. I wish there was a way to have this scene in this show because it’s emotional when you get to the end. I think the MCU will have it that Isaiah Bradley will be the first US Super-Soldier _after_ Steve Rogers. He will be the first successful Super-Soldier created by a new Super-Soldier serum that _wasn’t_ created by Dr. Erskine - a serum that had unknown risks because the scientists who were developing it were trying to duplicate Dr. Erskine’s serum but couldn’t be sure they got it right.

This was such a good episode! I love how they are exploring all the different nuances of the history...showing that we only know what either we’re told or what we witness ourselves (for example: for 80 years, the world was told that the Titanic sank in a whole piece even though some of the people who survived said that it broke in two...they weren’t listened to because they were not the higher ranking officers. And when the proof came out, it shifted ‘history’ from the lie to the truth.). So in this regard, what we thought we knew of the history is different than the real history. I’m glad they are also showing that yes, prejudicial attitudes and behaviors are there, not everyone is prejudiced though (which mirrors reality as well). That scene with Isaiah Bradley was SO well acted! Great job! That scene where Bucky admits that if Steve was wrong about Sam, then he’s wrong about Bucky was a deep insight into Bucky’s mind because Steve was the ONLY one who held to the thought that Bucky was a good man and was redeemable (Bucky, himself, didn’t even believe it or start to believe it until Steve continued to tell and show that yes, he was). And with John - he sees Captain America as a job, not who/what to stand for. Steve took that from a propaganda job to an actual hero who happened to be wearing that costume. John refers to himself as The Government (flexing his assumed power) and that is dangerous because that means he’s their meat puppet (to quote Agatha😉) and it’s never good to be a servant to the Government rather than a servant of the people. And when he said “then stay the hell outta my way”, I was like, “Yup. There we go.”
