It was one of my least awaited shows on Disney+ (probably due to marketing), but after seeing episode 1, I finally get a different idea from what the trailers showed. Initially, it started out okay (I'm surprised how Falcon's tech still works in some situations), but Sam Wilson actually has a compelling family story (which is interesting since he's a soldier coming back home to find everything upside down, Anthony Mackie is a family man and his character is "Uncle Sam"). As for Bucky, I initially thought the shrink wasn't your typical everyday doctor (and no, she isn't, she's a soldier too), and there's more to Bucky's story than I previously thought (I mean, the old man's son is dead! What??) As for the new Captain America, I think I recognize that face... maybe he's partnering with those terrorists? And I see what they're going with, which is cool - The symbol doesn't make the man, it's the man that makes the symbol, as Sam said. It's about how the heroic part of patriotism can't simply be fulfilled by anyone. Really neat stuff for a first episode.

I really enjoy your commentary on the episode and I agree, I like that this show is exploring the personal lives and struggles of both Bucky and Sam. But in Bucky's case in particular, I commend the writers for delving into the very real ramifications of his violent past as The Winter Soldier. Even though he was brainwashed and mind-controlled, the fact he remembers everything he did is truly tragic. How he copes with his remorse and guilt should be an interesting journey. However, I'm in in the minority opinion in that I think it would be an even more tragic mistake if Bucky reveals to Mr. Nakajima he was the one who murdered his son. Maybe if Bucky remained a stranger to the man, but he has cultivated a friendship with him. Telling Mr. Nakajima the truth would only compound the poor man's pain and wouldn't alleviate Bucky's guilt. It's a sad , complicated situation and I hope the writers do this plotline justice. Thanks for such insightful reactions!

I'm going to enjoy the show, but the money issue is something I've always shook my head at when it comes to comic book superheroes. If you're going to live in a capitalist country, then the first rule of thumb is, "nothing is done for free when it comes to the government." I mean, the government pays our soldiers a weekly paycheck to serve, so why wouldn't they pay superheroes that are protecting their interests and their lives just like they do their own soldiers... as a businessman, Tony Stark would have established that the collective governments of the world would be paying them individually because without the Avengers their countries cease to exist. It's a plot hole that exists in the comics as well, so it doesn't upset me, it just makes me laugh.

He's obviously on an official mission for the United States military, since he's a board one of their aircraft and has soldiers on the ground backing him up. And yet, even though those soldiers are getting paid like all normal soldiers get paid, somehow Falcon is doing all of his work for free? either he's still a member officially of the US military and therefore on the payroll, or he's working with them as a mercenary and, by extension, is getting paid. It's strange that they spend the episode pulling heart strings about his financial situation and yet at the same time showing him doing work for the American government... Like I said, a rather large plot hole🤔
