Hell, just the way they handled FFXIV in general is something you'll almost never see in regards to ANY AAA developer, for ANY game. Usually, when a game fails, the big names just step back and the team takes the hit. Grunt workers get shafted and then they mince some words and life goes on. You don't see the main producer getting replaced and the CEO of a huge game company publicly and sincerely stating how sorry he is for this mess, and promising, honestly, to actually fix it. Everything about FFXIV's triumphant rebirth is just improbable. It's a success story that really defies the trend and the norm of how these things go. A tiny cynic voice in me is kind of thankful this all happened slightly before going F2P became popular option. They might have taken the lazy route if there'd been more examples of it back then. But still, the way they actually owed up to it and allowed Yoshi P to do what had to be done, despite it being unprecedented and risky, is just awesome.

I remember that speech, it melted my heart to see how deeply invested he was. And how supportive the audience was when he had to take a moment to compose himself. I hope Square Enix truly understands the gravity of his success and the sacrifices he and his team made to achieve it. because he not only saved Final Fantasy XIV, he saved gaming's longest running and largest RPG franchise. The players give him shit over some of the things that fell flat, but i love that he's still willing to take a risk on something interesting, even if it doesn't work out. Tomorrow we'll find out if he captured lightning in a bottle again with Stormblood.

Tessa Jalloh yeah, it's remarkable to contrast Yoshida with the director he replaced. Such polar opposites from being someone so aloof and detached from the project to being someone who cares so deeply about his team and his product, and it shows. The launch was bumpy but they pushed through it and fixed it. I've already got Stormblood downloaded and updated and I'm ready to go!

As a player who started in Heavensward I'd never seen that speech before and watching it tugged a bit on my emotions to see this man so invested in this game that the state of things brought him nearly to tears. And to see the crowd so supportive only made that tug harder to be honest. Haha. Good luck Yoshi-P!

I tried to get into FF14 right at the 2.0 launch thanks to catching a few Mrhappy videos here on KZbin. Likewise I hadn't seen this speech Yoshi-P made addressing the server issues until now. It made me tear up, I knew he had a deep respect for the player base but at the end of the day he was a developer trying to sell a product. To see him get that emotional at the idea that the hard work he and his team did to try to save a dying game may not pay off makes me all the more proud to be part of that community.

I was in the third beta and onward to today. Ain't nobody out there in MMO development has been as both fan-friendly and up-front about the state of the game as Yoshida. That speech is just one of many reasons the entire FFXIV fanbase has rallied around Yoshi-P. He _actually cares_ about the game (it's basically his baby now) and he _actually listens_ to its players. It also helps that he brought a world-class team to the table. FFXIV may have some of the best writing ever put into a MMO (Heavensward even won an award for it), and the music (especially in the last two expansions) is better than a lot of movie soundtracks. Although the game is still overloaded, it's surprisingly stable (getting booted out of the game due to an error is pretty rare, all things considered, and when it happens you can be sure an emergency maintenance will be coming really soon to address the issue) and looks almost as great on potatoes as it does on costs-more-than-your-car gaming rigs.

The fact that Yoshi got this emotional because of history of the game he worked on just shows how much he cares. Thank you so much for making this series! I started playing during the phase 3 beta--a friend offered me an invite and I took it. I had been disappointed with FFXIII, and I had not found an MMO that kept my interest for more than a month so I figured I'd enjoy the beta and then move on. From the moment I logged in, and saw the opening cutscene, set food in Gridania, heard the music... I was hooked, I fell in love. I put up with those troubled times during early access, I moved to Faerie, I made friends. I literally just got done talking to the very first person I met on Faerie, now in Storm Blood. I've been continually subscribed since launch. I knew a little of what 1.0 had been like from watching a couple of gameplay videos, and watching some peoples videos of the end of 1.0, but this series covered so much. Thank you so much for making it. I feel I really can appreciate this game even more knowing where it came from, and how much like a phoenix the success has been.

Thank you for including Yoshi-P's live broadcast, which I had never seen before! As a 1.0 player, a game designer, and fan of FF for most of my life, it's staggering to see a creative leader show that level of vulnerability. It's something that would never happen in the West. Yoshi-P has been miraculous in his revitalization of both the game and the franchise. To see this on the eve of the Stormblood launch made me emotional for how far this game has come, and how many memories I've made all the years I've played it. Fantastic job sharing this unique moment with us!

I know this is a very late reply but here goes - I think that his sincerity and vulnerability is part of what makes it work - it shows real care for his product, his efforts and his customers and fellow gamers, it shows a level of genuine that we as customers don't often see - much less because of such a negative point where the game was basically a project that had failed to the degree of being tossed in the trash bin and set on fire - scrapping up the ashes and remains and working his - and his teams - collective arse off and actually making something genuinely good from it - I think his sincerity and vulnerability there really hit it home for a lot of people that were still on the fence about giving it a chance/ another chance - depending on if your were a 1.0 player or not- and made a lot of us realize that "he actually cares and isn't just another suite out for money." and that means something especially to people that have to regularly deal with the blatant greed and uncaring behavior of companies like EA - which we all know their crap by now. - speaking of - i wonder what EA would do if they ever had their FIFA license pulled - now that I think would genuinely hurt them financially. - not saying it would ever happen but it is an interesting thought.

I'm very glad to see this video. I've never been unsubscribed from XIV ever since 1.0 release and I am heartened to see Yoshida's dedication being made clear to the newer players. My long term friends and I certainly know it had its flaws, but the memories we have together, when the servers were pulled down after we fought on the verge of the apocalypse (literally) will always be a fond and sad memory... the wait and the fear that the game would not improve was tough, but thank goodness for the hard work from the entire development team under Yoshi-Ps guidance. And I can honestly say that Stormblood is an amazing improvement again, the new areas, the fleshed out NPCs, the music, the huge improvement to voice acting, PvP is much more fun and the impactful storyline! A shame the NA servers suffered DDoS attacks... and the influx of players left us in a queue in peak times, but other then that its been an amazing expansion so far.

I remember that tv commercial rather... unfondly. I was only 12 at the time, so I didn't even know what a Final Fantasy was. I was just annoyed at the frequency at which it aired and how it was always interrupting whatever cartoon I was watching. I'm glad that never soured my mood when I decided to actually try the game out when Heavensward released, because I've been a fan ever since. Watching that commercial now nearly brought a tear to my eye, and coupled with seeing Yoshida's speech for the first time... man, it's really something special.

Yoshi P delivering an emotional speech about a videogame has totally warped my brain regarding this industry. Thinking on it, I don't think I've actually ever seen an individual associated with games be this sincere and open to the public. In the Western gaming industry, everything is so rehearsed and polished and fabricated. Every time you might see a dev or game director try to be lighthearted or humorous it's immediately cut short by their monotone delivery and the fact that they're clearly reading pre-prepared lines. I love games, but I think I've always placed them lower than other forms of media like films, music, and books in terms of art, due to I think that general insincerity and clear avarice that has taken over the games industry. Yoshi P's speech here has given me a new perspective on all of that, at least regarding certain companies.

I was there for early access. The doom predictors were haters and were pretty biased. The attitudes among the players was "they will eventually fix the server issues. But at least the game is good." Those issues were easily fixable. The issues that plagued FFXIV1.0 were deep and not eventually fixable. I remember being able to log in the game eventually but I could not progress super far in the game during early access because the duty finder server was completely down. They did the emergency maintenance and log in restrictions and the issue was resolved. I didn't experience any more issues but I knew issues still existed. Those were also resolved super fast.

I've been loving the game as I'm basically slow going it through 2.0 and really immersing myself in the story and my new world. The I ran across this series randomly on KZbin. My god.... This honestly should be put into documentary format. It is an absolutely amazing story. I just finished watching the Cut scene for "End of an Era" and I got goosebumps. It pieces the story perfectly together. Its wonderful that you have put this fantastic voyage into perspective and quite frankly, made ARR that much more epic. I haven't watched this episode 6 yet, but Ill definitely watch the future episodes once i progress more into the game in order to avoid any spoilers. If you read most of my other comments, you'll find that Im not usually a very nice person. When I say that this series might be the best content Ive seen on KZbin since Clear Skies, I mean it.. Thank you for making this series :). Seeing as the game truly shined again, I'll probably lean in and buy it :)

That speech nearly made me cry. You can tell Yoshi really loves this game and wants to make it the best it can be. Even before he started sobbing you can tell he was near his breaking point. The man took a broken and dying game and made it into the second most successful MMO on the market today. Good work Mr.Yoshida-san, very good work!

I was part of early access! I remember being so frustrated; first I made a character on the wrong world from my fiance, then when I finally made my character on the right world, I couldn't get in. I remember being so mad that I'd let my friends talk me into buying this that I almost demanded a refund. But then my fiance just kinda shrugged and said "all MMOs have server issues at launch, let's wait a couple of weeks and see what happens". Now it's one of my favorite Final Fantasies. I'm glad I stuck with it. I'm sad I didn't get to experience the Yoshi-era 1.0, but I can't help but look at where this game came from and marvel at how far it's come.

Just watched the whole series up until now. Awesome stuff man, I didn't know 90% of any of this. I can't believe how intriguing and gut-wrenching FF XIV's past was. I really wish I was there to see it all. Also, watching Yoshi-P's speech...This man has my respect. I knew he was loved by the community, and now I know why.

I know those tears weren’t from sadness, but an overwhelming sense of love he was receiving from fans, and from the fact he knew he had righted the ship in front of him. I truly believe he wanted the game to be what it was always wanted to be, and wasn’t trying to make some cash grab. Anyone who is only invested in the money and doesn’t have love, blood, sweat, and tears poured into their game would not stand before a crowd and begin weeping. I think that’s why people love this game so much. There is a genuine love the entire team has for it, and that alone is what pushes the team forward with each release. There is no hidden agenda. It’s a love letter.

I was there for the phase three beta. One of the more bizarre errors was going into an instance (either a dungeon or solo Duty), finishing it, and returning to an oddly empty Eorzea. A player stuck in that limbo couldn't send tells, but could talk via linkshell (iirc). I suspect that this was due to the population limits and the game not 'reserving' a 'slot' for players on that world's server. So the game kicked them to a local-only version, which showed buildings and the like, but anything requiring communication with the server-side part of the game was gone or not responsive. I did appreciate just how detailed and open they were when explaining what needed to be to expand the sizes of Worlds, and to add new ones. I did opt to not play until the new servers were up and running, though.

Thank you for this series. My friend a I picked up a trial recently and as I searched how FF14 fits into the timeline I found your documentary. I heard the original FF14 1.0 was a terrible ...poopshow (to put it mildly), but I didn't know it has such a story behind it. They really took some massive risks but the turnaround they managed is amazing.

I can only imagine how stressed out and anxious Yoshi-P was when ARR was going through its beta and early access. You were working on this game for so long and right when you want get ready to release it you are given more setbacks and failures. It makes you appreciate the game we have now a lot more.

Man seeing YoshiP that emotional for all the troubles of the relaunch u gotta feel for the guy. What a journey him and his team has endured creating such a wonderful experience & it is really great to see that all that hard work is paying off with the imminent launch of Stormblood. How can any player of FF14 not love this guy!

YoshiP and his team better get damn good pay for literally rebuilding the kind of game you'd see on cellphones into what is it today, while also quite literally dropping the bomb on 1.0 in a way coherent to the lore. To quote Ul'dah, they turned sand into gold.

I remember my experience in phase 4, I got to around lvl 18 then I was stuck in an instance and no matter what I did I could not interact with anyone, so I explored the world and then after I stopped playing for about 4 months. Turns out in that amount of time my account was hacked and banned. waited 2 weeks to get my account back and my friend just decided to buy a new one for me. 6 months later I got an email saying my old account had been recovered lmao. Ive been playing FFXIV since and I love it.

This series was great, i started playing FFXIV in beta 2, I knew a game had come before it but didn't know why it failed. I later learned the story of what happened but not in this depth. This series has helped me appreciate so much more what the current dev team did for FFXIV. The most amazing part of this series I think is when they slowly brought Dalamud down through patches, I can't imagine the speculation in the forums etc, from the first post noticing "did anyone notice the moon changed colour" to the last few days on the server. Thanks for this series, I binge watched it over 2 days, I look forward to future installments

This was INCREDIBLY interesting! Thank you for this! Just the other day I was wondering what made the original XIV so bad, I'd heard stories but had no idea until I watched these. It's amazing that it was allowed to become the game it is today, and I am even more grateful for it.

Man looking back at the developer getting emotional about the problems...man it still hits lol. He and the team put a lot of time and passion into something they never even did before and he was genuinely sorry that it had such a problematic start for players that wanted it to succeed and helped in the forums and such. A great man :D

They wouldn't. Square had already announced that if FFXIV failed they'd had to stop their production of games because the company was going bankrupt with the amount of money invested in XIV. That and also Sony had sold all their stocks from Square at the year of release, dealing a killing blow in the company.
