If you look at his track record, he always pushed the limit and never faced any real pushback. He likely thought he could test the waters and if he went too far only the troops would be in harms way. He did it with the UN but even with NATO it was clear the US and NATO had learned that peace talks were only a delaying tactic for Milosevic.

@@souvikrc4499 Milošević was not imperialist because he was struggling to preserve the integrity of the already existent federation. Yugoslavia existed for as long as he was in power. The very people who toppled Milošević were the ones who finished off Yugoslavia, not him. Bosnia did not have statehood when it entered Yugoslavia, so it made no sense to give precedence to internal administrative lines between federal units over the outer borders of the federation. Not everyone wanted to secede from Yugoslavia. Not everyone in the Balkans was, is, nor should be a nationalist.

My research into the Yugoslav wars has so far been limited to mainly the war in the 1990s, with a few bits and pieces of how the country came to be since WW2 when Tito’s resistance group took back the nation from Axis occupation. I am curious if Tito used force to suppress nationalism. He doesn’t strike me as a completely ruthless dictator, actually strikes me as one of the better dictators of modern human history but seems like Tito wouldve had to suppress each nations sense of nationalism whenever it popped up. Slobodan technically tried to do the same, but where he failed was instead of enforcing everyone’s identity as Yugoslavian, he tried to enforce the Serbians identity as if it were Yugoslavia itself
