the book geek in me is always happy to see folks reacting to this gem based on Poe's work. Edgar Allan Poe didn't kill himself. He was found nearly unconscious and then died soon after at a medical center. You don't need to be familiar with Poe's work to enjoy this series but it's so much better if you know the stories.

I'm not super familiar with his work, but I'm surface-familiar enough to have picked up on a lot of the little details that nod to the stories and loved it for that much.

True! Some of the character and place names in TFOTHOU are "winks" to Poe's prose and poetry. It's fascinating how Flanagan takes existing classic thriller literature (aside from Midnight Mass, Midnight Club, etc) and tweaks it for a modern-day tale, still keeping things macabre and gruesome. This series was engaging, and just ghastly enough for my taste (I hate when a show leans on gore far too much and neglects characters and plot); I won't say any more so as not to spoil things for any noobs, LOL.

As a mild Poe fan I really enjoyed all the nods to his work that I caught (I'm sure there's so many more 😅). "I feel like we know the ending..." If you know Poe, the episode titles tell you how every death arrives, which is part spoiler and part anticipatory fun. But the joy is in the journey, even when you know the destination 💀

Right? Like Dan & Sam's little joke early in this video of "oh we know the ending, show over" is such a great thing about this show. Kinda like the old Columbo episodes, where we know what happens at the end, but the joy is absolutely in seeing the execution of the journey there.

@@DavidGowers Yes--- Columbo was not a whodunit, more of a how-did-it. Good series, each episode is basically a movie unto itself. I loved the episodes that featured guest stars Donald Pleasance, Ruth Gordon, Martin Landau, Leonard Nimoy.

Hey guys! I'm glad u r watching this limited series. I know it was hard for u to notice because of how dark it was, but the mom really was behind DA C. Auguste Dupin. Dupin was an interesting character that appeared in a couple of Poe's works, a French Sherlock Holmes. I am going to give u the full names & nicknames for Roderick Usher's children from eldest to youngest: Frederick "Freddy", Tamerlane "Tammy", Victorine "Vic", Napoleon "Leo", Camille & Prospero "Perry". The actress that portrays Juno & the 1 that plays Prospero r from the Mike Flanagan series u haven't seen yet, THE MIDNIGHT CLUB. The actress who portrays Roderick's granddaughter is from Flanagan's movie DR. SLEEP. I think Carla Gugino is amazing in this series. In an interview I saw, Carla describe her character to be more like Karma/Fate rather than a devil. I've heard her character described by other reactors as a Crossroads Demon/a Djinn. U know the saying "Careful what u wish for." I have read some of Poe's works, & re-read the ones pertaining to this series since I have a book w/collections of his writing. Anyway, I really enjoyed this series & hope u equally enjoy it.😊👍

I would also like to mention if you enjoy Juno, she is a main character in Midnight Club and a wonderful actress. "There's a Ouija board by their bed" Probably a little Easter egg from Flanagan's "Ouija: Origins". I know the mirror from "Oculus" makes it's own odd little appearances throughout Flanagan's work, it's in Gerald's Game and The Haunting of Hill House.

I proofread the German subtitles for this (as part of my job) and I learned so much about Edgar Allan Poe just by doing that. This show is packed with references to his work. I was researching half the time to see if there are official German translations for some of the quotes which made me fall into a hole of wikipedia articles and literature blogs. I obviously have heard of Poe before but I never knew the extent of his work. It was incredibly interesting.

i was so thrilled to see that you're reacting to this. I adore MF and this series is my favorite body of his work, including his films (even Dr Sleep, which is right up there in Top 3). It is true that MF's story is an enigma, as you can watch it, love it, and most importantly, get it. But i have to say that having knowledge of Poe's works would make you see this show in a very different way. You''ll still watch it, love it, and depending on how much Poe you binged beforehand, you'll get it. There are SOOOOO many references, homages, and easter eggs, from the names of the children to most of the episodes being named after one of Poe's works. FYI: you are correct. Perry is the cocky youngest Usher, but what was throwing you off was that characters also referred to him by his full name: Prospero. Prospero is the name of a character in one of Poe's' stories. Anyhoo, love your reactions (esp;ecially love the one to Carrie, my #2 Fave Film of All Time

You're not super off timeline wise 😂 Edgar Allan Poe died in 1848 (of an unknown disease, potentially rabies actually) - and most of Jack the Ripper's 'canonical' murders happened about 40 years later in 1888. He's known for the poem The Raven which is worth googling for future reference. Yes, Perry (Prospero) is the youngest. The one who suggested the nightclub.

Another great series from Mike Flanagan! Really hyped to watch your reactions to this show. Flanagan’s the man! Also, he tends to put little Easter eggs in his work for fans of his previous projects, for example you mention the Ouija board on the bedroom when the kids wake from the storm, that’s a shout out to his film Ouija: Origin of Evil, which starred Lulu Wilson, who plays young Madeline Usher.

So glad you are both getting into this one and to me this is the best show he has done after Haunting off Hill house of course. Edger died in 1849 Jack the Ripper killed 5 woman all in 1888 and only in that time frame, so that was after Edger's time. This one is full of his short stories...every episode is a different short story he wrote. So many familler faces as always with his shows and also he has filmed a movie based off a short story of Stephen King and again he uses a lot of familler faces in that one as well. It was interesting to see Mark Hamill here that was unexpected. the actor of the lawyer that talks to Rodrick is Carl Lumbly and he acted in Doctor Sleep as the ghost that helped Danny as a kid to learn how to capture the ghosts in his mind also the actress of Lenore is the actress of Abra in Doctor Sleep as well. There are some actors from the Midnight Club like the actor of Prosporo/Perry and the actress of Juno also Camille's assistants are both from there as well. Carla's character known as Verna is not the devil or death she is more complexed than all of that, you will understand as the show goes on and in the final episode what I mean. I love this show so much and can't wait to see how you react to every episode and the final in the end when everything comes together.

Mike Flanagan is genuinely a horror god. A true genius. I haven't seen Midnight Mass, although I'm starting to think I really should. Doctor Sleep? Not only a fantastic film, but through the brilliance of his filmmaking alone it healed a 40+ year old wound in the world of horror cinema. Haunting of Hill House was brilliant, and while I think I still like that better, House of Usher is...poetry. So fitting, given that it explores a lot of poems from Poe. This was the last thing Flanagan had to do in his contract with Netflix. What a phenomenal note to go out on. I don't think I've been so excited for videos from you two since Cobra Kai.

She definitely was standing behind the black guy in that scene where he says his mother is standing behind him. Fortunato pharmaceuticals is named after a character from one of Poe's short stories, "The Cask of Amontillado." There is a character named Fortunato who ends up in a very unfortunate situation in Poe's story which is ironic. The jester, also a character from The Cask of Amontillado & the raven are significant characters from Poe's work. Also the title of this episode is the 1st line in a poem titled The Raven... Regarding Midnight Club: it was planned by Mike Flanagan to be a 3 (or 4 I can’t remember) season story. Netflix cancelled it after the first season (classic Netflix🙄) After they announced the cancellation Flanagan released an outline of the entire Midnight Club series as he had written it, (on Reddit I think?) He then did this series for Netflix and finished out his contract with them and now has signed a deal with Prime. I hope Prime treats him better🤞🏻

His decadence of the late Gothic Influenced Baudelaire one of the great French decadadents. Psychological horror. But it was 7 adaptations by Roger Corman that are most famous. Seems insane you've never heard of them they are considered classics mostly the great Vincent Price in the lead. I'd be surprised if this series is any where near them Including Corman's house of Usher! Very well we shall see.....

The Midnight Club was meant to be two seasons long but, when Mike signed to Amazon they cancelled it after one. He did reveal all the Season 2 plans and spoilers on his Tumblr but I felt Season 1 can stand on it's own anyway.

The actress who plays Juno actually had her leg amputated in real life. She started out as a Tik Tokker surprisingly.

Since you know Rahul from Funhaus TBR, you'll be pleased to learn that Rahul got Hamill to record a message for Jacob, who loves star wars, saying that he hates him 🤣

I can only recomend watching this show on an OLED TV. Preferably in a darker environment.

Don't worry, there is scientific basis behind missing the word "of" in a sentence. Look it up, it's quite interesting.
