@@reformcongress Me too. Saw it at the drive-in in '77 with my parents (who also loved it), when I was 10. Then watched it many times on TV, then VHS, etc. Many younger folks also love it, but I don't think they'll ever quite understand what it was like for those of us who were kids when it came out, what a phenomenon it was and how life altering for so many of us, not to mention culture altering and film altering as well. I currently own the first two trilogies (the sequel trilogy doesn't count for me) on DVD, and the original trilogy is the theatrical release without Lucas' later edits. Hopefully they release that version on Blu-ray at some point.

@@mishynaofficial you may be tired of it but that doesn’t stop it from being true. It absolutely pertains to the original film, and arguably to the entire original trilogy. It’s not a bad thing. Regarding your comment about the pacing of the movie being slow; if you compare it to other movies of the time this would actually be at the faster end of the spectrum. Movies back then were not as fast paced in general. The trend since that time has been for a lot of movies to be very fast paced. So that's another thing you have to think about and remember while watching movies from different past decades. I was 5 when this movie came out, grew up watching Star Wars. Now my kids are into Star Wars and we enjoy watching the movies together. I'm glad you like them so far. I have a reaction suggestion; you need to watch The Princess Bride! According to my dad and uncles, it wasn’t hard to walk into the theater with one ticket and just stay the whole day, as long as you kept moving. But it’s weird, tickets were basically the same with inflation, but wage stagnation means they were cheaper. think my dad said it was about $3 with a coke or a popcorn? But he was making 2.35 an hour at Isaly’s in college, so he could afford roughly a showing per hour on a shift of work. Now, at Fed minimum, an 8 hour shift with no taxes withheld could only make you enough to see the movie once for every two to three hours worked, depending where you live. So by that measurement, it’s more than twice as expensive these days. For a middle perspective, I made $5.35/hr working at blockbuster in high school in the late 90s early 00s. Movie tickets then we're about $10. So from 77 to 2002, inflation had caused movie prices to almost quadruple, at least triple. But minimum wage had only doubled. From 77 to now, Movies are almost 10x as expensive, but the minimum wage only increased by about 3x. When people say "rich getting richer, poor getting poorer," this is what they mean.

As someone who is a lifelong Star Wars fan born in 2000, its heartwarming to see all the comments of people who experienced ANH back in '77 and the phenomenon it was and still is. Another testament to how addictive the series is comes from my own story of how I became a fan. i remember the first time I ever saw Star Wars was when I was 4 or 5 on vacation. I walked in on my mom in her room getting ready for bed and watching Return of the Jedi and it happened to be the iconic "I am your father" scene. I remember immediately being transfixed on Vader and my mom telling me the story of how she first saw it in theaters. 20 years later here I am, feeling like I'm 5 again, sitting with my mom and marveling at how cool everything is.

I love it every time you say, “This movie holds up so well! I’m impressed this was made in 77’!” Because the interesting thing is none of this existed previously or even currently with anyone else at that time! Lucasfilm invented this stuff! There was no special effects team, this level of graphics, let alone the technology. Lucasfilm quite literally invented the tech, the software, and the necessary department for any of this to exist to begin with! It’s all very fascinating that we get to see this breakthrough in both movie making and technology at once.

Okay, here is what it was like in May 1977 seeing Star Wars. Remember cable was really not around , there were no Block buster video stores , or VCRs so normally you had to wait for years for a film to be on network television. and on a small screen with a ton of commercials. So you really had to go to the cinema to see it. Here is how it went for my 3 brothers and I. We had to plan which day, we packed a lunch , and all four of us took turns standing in line for 8 hours!!! The line was around the building twice, you only hoped that when you got to the ticket booth it was not sold out yet! There were 2 other guys we chatted with in line in front of us. We all got in after waiting for over 8 hours!!. On the big screen the big sound, and in seconds you were taken away to another land. At the end when the screen credits ran everyone, I mean everyone stood up, clapped and cheered. There was never anything like it.!! Now the 2 guys in front of the line with us. Got right back in line to see it again. My whole family probably went at least a dozen times to see it. Loved every minute. But then we had to wait 3 years to see Episode 5 The Empire Strikes Back. But worth the wait. So glad you got to see it, just wish you could have seen it at the cinema. George Lucas re-released Episodes, 4, 5 and 6 in 1997 with improvements made and some computer generated They were all in the cinema again, which helped raise money to do the prequels. There you go. and May the Force Be with You!

True. It is possible to find the original theatrical release, either as one of the DVD/bluray "extras" (not in HD sadly) or in the "De-Specialized" version from a guy named Harmy. If you google "Harmy despecialized star wars" you can find it. It's HD and has all of the "Special Edition" stuff removed. Got out of home for two showings in a row. Years later, I read the biography of Alec Guinness. He had such a versatile career, as an actor. He was paid well, for SW, but he didn’t like how Obi-Wan made him more famous than other acting. Alec had a story, where a young fan approached him on the street in England, and was ‘vibe’ on Obi-Wan, and how he’d seen this film 40 times. Alec said to the youth he shouldn’t waste all his time in the cinema. So, yeah, I stopped counting.

The stormtroopers immediately stand at attention. No speaking, just the breathing of the respirator... Tells you all you need to know about the greatest villian in film history Also R2D2 knew which way to go on Tattooine because he has been there before. C3PO (the gold dude) is also from that planet and was actually built by Luke's father Anakin but his memory was erased years before. For the time, cinematically, this was an extremely fast paced movie. One of the reasons people saw it in the theater so many times was that they felt like it couldn't all be taken in in one viewing. This set the stage for the action movies that would be increasingly faster paced as the decades progressed. (That said the story itself follows the basic plot of the classic "Hero's Journey" present in myths and legends for thousands of years. The creator of Star Wars was big fan of writer Joseph Cambell's book outlining these plot elements. (A many other elements came from Japanese samurai movie director Akira Kurosawa's "The Hidden Fortress".

@@kathyastrom1315 I love that so much of this thread seems to be young girls who watched Star Wars in '77! We were 9 and 11, I was 13 and I keep talking about my sister who was another 9 year old. Princess Leah made such a mark on us! In my real life I'm not much of a follower of celebrity, but I actually cried when Carrie Fisher died. I don't think I had ever done anything like that before.

This film was only released in 42 theaters originally. It broke 41 house records. When it was released in Japan in 1978, one of the producers, Allen Ladd Jr., attended the premiere. However, he was worried when the audience left the theater in complete silence. Fortunately, he learned later that silence was the ultimate compliment that a Japanese audience could give a film. If you want to hear some really great behind the scenes stuff, watch the documentary Empire of Dreams. It is a must watch for any diehard Star Wars fan. And the simple reason the guys at the beginning are only wearing helmets is that they broke as F. The Empire has all the cash.

I think one of the reasons why A New Hope has a relatively slow pacing, is because they needed to slowly build up the world to make it more grounded and believable for an unfamiliar audience.
@richardathome65
@richardathome65 6 ай бұрын
Actually, that was the way movies were paced at that time. Modern movies have really been sped up in regards to pacing, some would say to compensate for lower attention spans of audiences, but that's the trend with this type of movie now. Lucas didn't want to spend the whole movie explaining things so he just presented the tech and world building like it was and left it for the audience to get it by themselves. When Star Wars was released it was considered a fairly fast paced movie.

So, the opening of the film mentions that the plans were stolen during the rebellion's first actual battle, meaning that the Battle of Yavin, where they blow up the Death Star, is the second official battle of the galactic civil war. A later film, that you'll probably react to at some point, depicts that first battle, and we now know (retroactively,) that most of the rebellion's ships and fighters were lost there. This means that the pilots and fighters that took on the Death Star were effectively the "B" team, probably made up of fighters and bombers down for maintenance and pilots who were on sick call, or in the brig for petty charges or even some random kid from a desert planet. They didn't even have any ships large enough to evacuate the planet before the Death Star got there, and were forced to make a stand with literally anything they had lying around. As someone who saw the movie in theaters in 1977, this makes the whole end sequence hit different.

Editors Note: Jabba was not human in 1977, he wasn't in the movie at all (except for name dropped). The scene with the fat man standing in for Jabba was intended to have a stop-motion creature overlayed on it, but Lucas had to drop the idea because it would have been too expensive to do and the mystique of Jabba worked just as well with just the name drops. They didn't even have a design for Jabba before dropping the shot, so up until Return of the Jedi, no one had ever seen him, we just had this buildup of how he was such a badass crime boss and got the big reveal in that third movie. Lucas added the Jabba scene in A New Hope back in for the Special Edition in 1997.

I watched this movie in 77 while laying on the rear deck of my mom's Maverick (car, not truck). Even at age 5 this movie was so impactful that it ingrained itself upon my memory. Mind you, what you are seeing is a movie that has been updated a few times. Any scene where droids are whizzing around in the background or where monsters look really good is likely a modern addition. Also, while storm troopers aren't the brightest bulbs in the galaxy, bear in mind that from the moment the team landed on the Death Star, the imperial plan is to follow them to the rebel base. You can't follow dead people, so every blaster shot on the Death Star was MEANT to miss the team.

What you were saying at the end about there being a character in this film for everyone was interesting. Episode 4 is a classic example of "The Hero's Journey", and is often used as a reference by people teaching the craft of writing. It has all the main archetypal characters: the hero, the mentor, the antagonist (arguably contagonist in this movie, since we don't meet the true antagonist until the next one), the comedic sidekicks (C3PO and R2D2), the skeptic (Han Solo) etc. - and the plot structure follows a very standard pattern too. Not that that detracts from it in any way - it's pretty much a perfect movie :)

First of all, LOVE the Editor's note, that man earned his money. Second the reaction is very positive and accepting of the era this movie came out. Regarding pacing, older movies do feel like they are more careful of not losing the audience, the play slower and telegraph/explain things more or stick to just the main story. I have seen this from my habit of watching original movies when I hear a new movie is based on an older movie. The two examples I can think of now are Ocean's Eleven (1960 Vs 2001) and The Italian Job (1969 vs 2003) I guess none of them are that new, but the idea still applies.

One of the things that makes the original trilogy stand out compared to today, all ships and sets are all physical props/designs. That’s not done nearly as in depth today. Obviously the VFX of lasers and lightsabers show their age, but they’re iconic and revolutionary at the time. I envy you getting to experience Star Wars for the first time, that feeling for so many fans has nearly impossible to relive again. 😭 Hope you’re ready, got a lot more to see and experience!!
