Yes, I do have a personal political view, but I don't think that it influenced our analysis of the fall of the Roman Republic. As Jenny and I said in the beginning, the three episodes are about an historical event, the fall of the Roman Republic. I am sure that some of those who downloaded the piece I wrote years ago about the Roman military and the fall of the Republic did so because they were looking for parallels, but that would be a mistake. The notion that those who fail to learn from history will be doomed to repeat its mistakes is based on a misunderstanding of historical causality. Republican Roman and contemporary American society, culture, and political institutions are completely different. But the story of how the Roman Republic unraveled and fell while simultaneously acquiring a Mediterranean based empire is in itself fascinating.

Why do rightists have this hysterical tantrum reaction whenever anyone mentions the word politics? Life is political but this only becomes a problem when these precious boys think their awful ideas might be confronted somehow. Pathetic.
