Good Jesters were masters of Satire. Due to literally anything they said being considered a Joke, they were the only ones who were remotely allowed to criticize the king. Of course, they're still just as punishable as everyone else- there's just a bigger barrier. Along with this, Jesters actually had tons of job security for medieval times, and some were even invited to live in castles with the kings they served, as well as potentially even becoming low-level nobility themselves after retirement.
