In 2006 I road part of this train line including walking that bridge. More importantly as an Australian I also visited the WWII Cemetery. It was very moving to see the graves of so many of my countrymen! Their sacrifice not forgotten. The following day I was able to walk the small section of the Death Railway known as Hellfire Pass. It too was even more moving. I can recommend it!

Didn't take the special excursion train but used Kanchanaburi as a base to explore the region. Had a chance to walk both the River Kwai bridge as well as trestle bridge. Then took the afternoon commuter train from Nam Tok back to Thonburi station on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River. Terrific value for money, and a very good way to observe rural life in that part of Thailand.

I did this in 2016 and also went for a boat ride along the river. The bridge is not the one that appeared in the movie as it was destroyed by American planes. The foundations are just visible and run parallel to the new bridge.

It was never the one in the movie. The old bridge was just a normal wooden trestle not a cantilever and the steel bridge was pretty much built alongside the trestle before it was destroyed in the 2nd bombing run which also took out 2 of the bowstring trusses on the steel bridge

Hello, I made this kind of trip about 30 years ago, as part of a 3 week holiday in Thailand. So your video brought back a whole lot of good memories!!!!!!! In those days the trains were a lot older and the toilets, well lets say 'not very attractive....' As i was travelling off-season it was -luckily- less crowded than in your video. But even those days people were walking on the tracks to get a glimpse of the train, filming with big cameras. I was able to travel tot the other side of the river as a was staying in one of the flaoting hotels. From ther you had a pefect view on the 'death valley railway' and th constructionj. But of course I was also aware of the black history berhind it. I also traveled by train to Nong Khai in the north of Thailand situated near the Mekong river. Daytrain to and nighttrain back. Those tripe were really adventures. Maybe you should try it one day instead of going to Chang Mai like everybody does. The north-east was far less touridtic which was very nice. Again thanx for this great video. Greetings from NL.

A little note. This is an excursion train departing Bangkok Hua Lamphong. There're also 6 regular services to Sai Yok departing from the old Thonburi Terminal ( The first and last train of the day departs and terminates at Nong Pladuk Junction on the sounthern line ) so don't confuse the 2 when you book the ticket. Obvious benefit of the excursion train is of course everyone has booked seat so the train isn't subjected to overcrowding which is a massive plus when you're trying to film or take photos of Tham Krasae trestle and the train itself is in much better shape than the regular 3rd class cars. Tho should you decide to stay in Kanchanaburi instead of doing the one day trip the regular trains will no doubt be more beneficial to you and if you miss out on the excursion ticket well there's the 2nd option for you. And if you choose to ride the regular trains the evening view on the 3pm train ( last train ) departing Sai Yok is pretty stunning especially when approaching Kanchanaburi the sun will be setting while running through fields with mountain backdrops

I've been to the bridge and the cemetery, but on a bus tour not by train. Very moving. Accompanied by a number of Australians for whom the whole experience was very emotional. As for train journeys in Thailand, I have only travelled between Bangkok and Ayutthaya (historical centre - very worth visiting). The train journey was, shall we say, functional☺. Very cheap though. Thailand meanwhile has some fascinating plans for developing high-speed rail services across much of the country. Another fun fact: The bridge is not on the original location, the wooden one was further downstream. Yet another fun fact: The river it passes over wasn't called the Khwae until it became a tourist destination. The actual River Kwai is the one the railway follows upstream from Kanchanaburi. Yet in a typically Thai fashion they simply renamed it to Kwhae Yai - the New Kwai - and renamed the fork before the confluence to Kwhae Noi - the Old Kwai...
