The Fancy Answer to the EVO/STI: 2008 VW R32

If a Honda Civic and an EVO had a baby, and sent it to boarding school, this is it: The 2008 Volkswagen R32 was a performance variant of the popular GTI. It has a 3.2 liter VR6 engine making 250HP at 6300RPM (10 more than the Mk 4 R32), with torque remaining at 236 ft-lbs. With the paddle-shifted DSG gearbox it would hit 60MPH in 6.2s, putting the power through a Haldex front-wheel-biased AWD system. The R32 always trailed the Subaru STI and Mistubishi VO in terms of speed and agility, but in felt like a higher-quality car, and it was more, uh, mature looking than its wing-wearing competitors. Kyle brought this clean example wearing one of the best blues ever created, Deep Blue Metallic.

I'm the proud owner of an Audi TT with the 3.2 and he is right, the exhaust note is glorious. I don't care if it's not the fastest or if it's a "hairdressers" car, it's a fkn blast to drive in and around town.

If the windshield washer light is on, and the reservoir is full, its the sensor. If you're using the RainX orange, it can cause some residue or building up on the sensor causing the fault. I usually use white vinegar, 50/50 with the washer fluid to clean it up, and get the light to go away.

Glad someone said this, I had a 2008 Audi A6 with the exact same issue. Apparently it's common with these cars. There actually was a class action suit against RainX because of it, a lot of cars (not just VW/Audi) use that sensor and RainX said on the bottle it would be compatible with all brands, even though the high silicone content of the washer fluid would gum up the sensor.

@TML34
@TML34 5 жыл бұрын
@@jomaha9227 Electric power steering simulates the amount of effort for the steering via load sensors this results is a very "muted" feel of the road surface. The programing software of the steering helps, but unless you're driving a 911, the road feel just isn't as good. But it's lighter than hydraulic systems and because there's no parasitic drag on the engine, you also get slightly better fuel economy.
@TheSmokingTire
@TheSmokingTire 5 жыл бұрын
@@jomaha9227 It depends on a lot of things. First is the type of mechanism they use. Good EPS systems have the assist motor attached to the rack (like Porsche). Some system have the assist box in the middle of the steering shaft, usually for packaging, which adds moving parts and reduces feel. Then there's the amount of boost the steering gets. Some cars over-assist to make the car easier to steer. It's not easy to tune an assist system to amplify the driver's input enough to move the wheels without overdoing it.

damn Z...so many info errors about this car. The steering is electronically assisted. There is a traditional rack and pinion attached directly to the wheel. You can't feel what the tires are doing because the owner has some below average tires on it and his bushings are probably shot to shit. Looking at those stock engine mounts, i can only assume the bushings for the suspension are stock too. This is a tuner car just like anything else, mods need to be performed to bring some life out of it. Also the ESP on this car is a joke. I never drove with it on as it is horribly intrusive with braking and aggressive on-throttle inputs through corners. This car needs 255 squared at the very least to feel good through the corners, those stock 225 tires are a joke. I'm probably the only R32 owner in Socal that would thrash it as hard as anyone else on AC. Hopefully it'll be back out thrashing again soon.

I like that this guy is honest about steering and brake feel. New bmw's are a joke, he's right. Everyone is afraid to dump on the rampant PlayStation steering. Where did we loose the plot? Steering feel is 50% of what makes a car sporty in my mind. Vr6 is one special engine, and the stealthy everyday aspect of this is amazing. It's a shame vw can't remember they built stuff like the scirocco mk1 and mk2 and bring the fun back.

Zack: "...Subarus have reliability problems..." Me: makes a fresh bag of popcorn. :D Relative to some other recently released vehicles, the STI's wing seems sedate and conservative in design. In the more muted colors, the STI's wing is less in your face. Thanks to the owner for bringing out this fun hatch -- love the blue. Yep, PA state inspections are a thing. If you drive over 5k miles / year, there is an emissions test. Additionally, tires, brakes and lighting (typical safety stuff) are checked. With the state of roads in PA (condition and age), it is a good thing that all [legally] driven cars are given an annual review. We can't afford to have junkers driving around and breaking down on two lane roads or antiquated four lane highways.

I had one, mint conditions, bought it with 26k miles, sold it with 28k. It's much more a sense of occasion than this MK5 and much rarer too, engine sound is great and the shape is just gorgeous. BUT, I had some issue with the Haldex ECU that are not available anymore from VW so you either source one used or you get one reconditioned by VW at a staggering cost. If you don't drive fairly regularly fuel pumps tends to go and even if the engine is quite bullet proof it may have some quirks sooner or later. Overall a good car but maintenance costs, if something fail, can be a little scary or just not as straight forward as you may think.

They really are but one has to make or be conscious that carbon build up is something one has to prevent over time and miles also the water pump would need replacing and overall maintains, but people don’t pay attention to that and believe that complications just come from lack of quality. 🤷🏿‍♂️

Auus Worrior the 24 V VR6 does not have that issue with carbon build nor with the water pumps. That issue is/ was a known issue with first and second Gen GTI 2.0 engines.

I used to have one I bought new till I had to sell it after losing my job. I loved that car. Yes, there are faster cars, better handling but unless you can plop down a couple hundred grand and be ok with that as a daily driver there was no reason for me to look past the R32. Fun to drive on short or long distances. Big boot for getting daily life tasks done.... just a great car. Oh and so much fun in the snow. One year I was passing stuck suvs after an unexpected snow storm hit the area.

I might get some hate as this is a VW video, but I’m looking for a car and after seen that it got mentioned a lot in the video, I’m in the possibility of purchasing a nice gray WRX STI hatchback, but the idea of the boxer puts me down, and I think they can’t handle too much power because the ringlands break, on my little research on forums I found they fail at around 340 crank?? I like fast cars but I don’t know about the subbie, can someone please help???

If you mod it don't be cheap, get a good dyno tune. Check oil often. Lots of stock motor EJ's with more than 300whp.
@jlopez1017d
@jlopez1017d 5 жыл бұрын
Going wide open throttle under 3500 rpm causes ringland failure a lot of subbie owners don’t know that so buying secondhand is a gamble I learned the hard way but I loved my WRX it was so fun when it was working correctly. If you’re not a good mechanic or don’t have money aside for repair funds it’s not a good choice

jlopez1017d I’m a good mechanic, but having two heads on opposite sides confuses me lol 😂 even easy maintenance like changing spark plugs seems hard, I’m ser between an STI or a 135i with the N54 which also has its share of problems

@jlopez1017d 5 жыл бұрын
SL9SH I was thinking about purchasing an STI and ended up buying a 335i with the N55 engine it’s still certified pre owned so I don’t have to worry about repairs for a while. I am not a good mechanic, the 135i seems like a good alternative though if you can find one with a manual
