A look at the work of one of the Golden Age's greatest illustrators, and the evolution of his stylistic approach during his lifetime. And an eagle-eyed viewer has pointed out there is an error. When mentioning The Rubaiyat I show illustrations from Arabian nights, so for now just ignore it and eventually I'll remake the video and replace the images.

The cultivation of the imagination is a blessing. Today, people are slapped with labels that may deter the mind from wandering, thus promoting a trend towards uniformity of thought. People become comfortable, and noninquisitive, when things are predictable. Fostering an approach that looks to the (inner, and outer) horizons, could be a great asset. I like being on the edge of my seat, or finding an escape from the mundane, sometimes. It makes me feel like I am ready for anything, and at the same time flowing into everything.

@@PraiseTheFSMonster There are actually way more jobs in art than many people believe*. And jobs very closely related to being an artist. It's a matter of having the education/background, and not insisting that your first, or 8th job is going to make you the artist you see yourself as in your own dreams. Plus a lot of, lot of, lot of practice and a bit of luck. Realizing, too, that jobs kind of close to what you want to do but still bring in a paycheck are better than giving up the dream, or stubbornly hitting your head against a wall (not finding "the job" the first time) that just isn't going to budge, this time. Better to bend a bit, but consistently bending towards the dream. If more you g people could (calmy) express this to their parents, along with the opportunities they would be willing to take before the dream job comes, or the money to have one's own studio and gallery, parents might be more comfortable with "I'm going to be an artist!" (*The Bureau of Labor Statistics can be a good place to start).

Great job again Pete. Dulac is so hard to capture because of his adaptive and changing styles through temperament, shapes, gesture and palate. His ability to pull it off makes for a weak “brand” if you will, but gains him hero status in the field. Always a surprise and yet another jewel to be found his. My teachers at California College of the Arts(and Crafts) would share him like a treasured secret. In classes for illustration, watercolor, figure drawing, color, and graphic design his name and work would pop up as would the oooos and awwws . His work spanning; intaglio, letterpress, and litho. From the Wright brothers to jets, Model Ts to Thunderbirds. Art Nouveau, Deco, Both World Wars. Europe to America, Quite a life of always learning and changing. A survivor and in the end = Hero

I remember seeing very beautiful art pieces as a young child. Only now do I realize that it is this artist. The many illustrations I have seen was in an antique shop once when I was young. I loved picture books then before I started to only read chapter books and novels at the age of six, and remember stumbling upon one of the books that had his art in it. It was Sleeping Beauty, and the pages were very old and faded. I asked the lady who owned it where it came from, and she told me that it was passed down in a family for generations. How it got in her shop was due to the death in the family, and the members did not want many of the things that they found to be junk. She then showed me some beautiful faerie figurines and prints in a small corner of her shop. I wanted to jump into the illustrations and go to far off places. When my relatives came to look for me, I didn't budge from where I was standing. They had to drag me out of there. I remember being mad that I couldn't play with the faeries. My mom told me that I had my own Tinkerbell toys and fairy costumes at home waiting for me. I said "But they are not as pretty as these! These are art!", lol. My grandmother then bought me a bunch of art books. As I got older, she gave me a human biology textbook printed in the nineties, so the information was outdated, but I still loved to read and interpret the articles until I had my own way of understanding it. I used it to make art. I believed that you needed life to make art, so I studied everything. I would catch bugs and butterflies as well to use as models, then set them free. I wanted to know and understand how many of the well respected artists made art and music, so I would study and research as much as I could. I would go to the library at school whenever I got the chance. I never bothered with the picture books, but the ones about science. Many of the kids made fun of me for how odd I was. But thd art teacher loved me. She always wanted to display my art. When we did self portraits, (mind you this was third grade), I amazed the adults with my accuracy. Due to my age, they expected the typical drawing a third grader would do. But I had confronted my identity and went on a journey of how others saw me, and how I saw myself. I combined the two and just drew. I didn't know what it was until it was finished since I was so concentrated. I was very quiet and shy when it came to my art and reading books, as well as studying science books. When she wanted to have it displayed in the library, I was of course very embarrassed. But she said I was very good at it and had a strong sense of self image. I don't really draw myself much anymore, but do draw many other things. I love doing watercolors and mixed mediums to get unique textures and interesting colors. I still view that if art has no true sense or core of life deeply within it, and it is just flat and mundane(corporate art for example, Google, Facebook, etc.), it is not truly art. It needs to have a heart in order to convey it's emotions and theme if it has any. Art tells a story which is unique to every individual who comes across it. Art also doesn't just exist in paintings, sketches, or statues. It is us as well. We are living, walking pieces of art. We were the beginning of what art is now today. We created it. Whether it be by accident or purposefully, we created regardless. So look around you. Art is everywhere. It is in everything.

Hello to you and thanks a lot for your very personal reflection on the nature of creating images. As someone who is worryingly near the end of this journey I can say with conviction that drawing and making pictures all my life has been one my greatest pleasures and kept me just this side of sane.

So glad I discovered you today, with YT's suggestion of Maxwell Parrish. You've achieved the perfect balance of content, pace, information, and I love your voice. The writers, but more especially the illustrators of children's books of the Golden Age, made a deep impression on my early years. I'm looking forward to recapturing those memories with your videos - thank you!

Hello and welcome to the channel. I'm pleased to say there are a large number of other videos which are either entirely about particualr illustrators, such as Rackham and Pogany, and a host of others dotted about in the unsung heroes series. I hope you find them of interest.

Absolutely wonderful. Thank you for such a well done video. The illustrations selected were excellent choices to show the progression of his work. As a child, we had one of his books. Being an absolute nerd, I would sit and look at the illustrations and make up my own stories. I couldn’t read yet. I have no idea what happened to the family books after I left home and moved away. I try not to think about. For me the loss of these personal treasures is painful, like losing an old friend.

I know just what you mean, I'd kill for my Yellow Fairy Book and my East of the Sun, West of the Moon I had as a child. I could get lost for what seemed like hours in the illustrations, as a child one is immersed in the pictures, it was magic.
