On March 31, 1943, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s OKLAHOMA! opened on Broadway at the St. James Theatre and transformed the future of theater. The first of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s many collaborations marked the birth of a new genre, the musical play, which for the first time seamlessly integrated story, song and dance. The original Broadway production ran for 2,212 performances and was recognized with a Special Tony Award® in 1993 to honor the original Broadway production.

I am glad at this late date to see the original de Mille choreography. I know the movie's dances were based on these; it's good to see where they came from, though.

1943 Oklahoma. Where are the original landowners, the Native Americans, in this struggle? Sadly nowhere on stage. It is a treat, however, to see how much deMille loves dancing , and her joyous, thoughtful choreography, in spite of the story's racist historical exclusion.
