In Formula 1, Pit stops are really important, the cars are the best they have ever been, and the drivers are incredible, 100th of even 10th of seconds count, so a Pit Stop can either win a race, or lose it, and when you see the Pit Stops they preform today, they are quick, but this was not always the case, Pit Stops were part of the sport from the very beginning in the 50s, so this is the incredible history of the Pit Stops, from the early 50s to today, how they reduced the time from 67 seconds to 1.82 seconds.

An interesting fact about the modern pitstop is one of the big pioneers of the choreographed pit stop was a NASCAR team called the Wood Brothers Racing, who's pit crew also helped with pit stops during the 24 hours of Le Mans race in i believe 1966 for Ford, and also helped win the 1965 Indy 500 for Lotus, generally speaking, many people tout them as being the inventors of the modern pit stop.
@Dat-Mudkip
@Dat-Mudkip Жыл бұрын
The Wood Brothers tried to find an advantage in places most people didn't think to look. In the early years of NASCAR, tire changes were not a regular occurrence. Save for Darlington's Southern 500, most races were around 100 miles, which could easily handle just one set of tires (assuming nothing went amiss). Whenever teams did have to change tires (most notably in the Southern 500) teams would take their time changing the tires. In fact, it actually wasn't uncommon for the driver to physically cut the engine, get out of the car, smoke a cigarette, and get back in the car with time to spare. The Wood Brothers realized that if you minimized how long you spent on pit road, you could spend more time on the track. While their pit stops were by no means fast (by today's standards), it did not take long before the competitors took notice. The team decided to take it a step further at this point, a started to regularly practice pit stops until they were extremely efficient at it. The Wood Brothers are largely credited with getting Jim Clark to victory lane in the 1965 Indianapolis 500 after Ford hired them for the sole purpose of making a fast pit stop. It should be noted that even into the 1970s, pit stops in NASCAR were still slow - it was not uncommon practice during a full course caution for a team to bring a driver in, change just the left side tires, send him back out to avoid being lapped by the pace car, and then bring him back in a second time to change the right side tires.

They still do right side only sometimes as a strategy move to gain positions. This is faster, because NASCAR has only mechanics for one side and they'd have to move to the other. Making this move fast was once invented by Junior Johnson, who was a master in finding loopholes and is often stated to have "written half the rulebook". Swinging around the car jack while running around the front had the welcomed side effect of keeping the watching official at distance or knocking him over :) But yes, the Wood Brothers brought the idea of orchestrated pit stops over to Indycar in 1965, where it had been perfectioned since then - so what Brabham did in the early 80s in F1 was basically copying Indycar stops.
@HighlandCall
@HighlandCall Жыл бұрын
The Wood Brothers thing at Indy is slightly exaggerated in historical retellings - the cars at that point were allowed to carry vast amounts of fuel (in 1964 there were cars that could have theoretically gone non-stop for all 200 laps but they also didn't care about secure storage and so there was a big crash at the end of lap 1 with a lot of fire) and the tyres lasted all race so all they needed to do during the race was refuel Clark's car at his two scheduled pit stops. Its an interesting point and an indication of the importance that Chapman put into winning at Indianapolis but it had very little impact on the actual result.

There's no mention of Fangio's pit stop at the German GP of 1957. One of the wheel nuts of his Maserati got lost under the car, and it took half a minute to find it. Fangio's subsequent chase, and repassing, of the Ferraris of Hawthorne and Collins made it one of the greatest drives in F1 history.

Even if pit stops used to take over a minute, each team STILL had to do it faster than other teams… so no matter what, every second counts.

The whole idea of run a car under the legal weight limit then make a pit stop to make the car legal is both hilarious, and and resulted in a 200mph shotgun. It sprayed lead shot all over the pits in 1984. Cue Tyrrell getting an entire library thrown at them. And...then some, though pit stops had been in other orms of racing since the 50s as well, not just F1

It should be "tenths or even hundredth count." A hundredth is smaller than a tenth of a second. The 1st .0 is tenths, the .00 is hundredths and the .000 is thousandths of a second. You jist said it the wrong way around. Great content though, thankyou.

Bullshit about 1970s. Those days change of tires was pretty obvious with varing conditions and the teams trained pit stops carefully. In 1970s a change of tires took ca 10 seconds.
@rash-id

You are talking about tire change, I talked about the pit stop as a whole, refueling was allowed in the 70s, and when I said 2-3 minutes, I didn't come up with this number, I think that it was Gordon Murray who talked about it in the documentary made by RedBull.

@@rash-id but you showed a graph (2:11) that showed different to what you later said... As I'm in nit-picking mode that clip from the 50's at the start is used a few too many times & it is pronounced En-gin (think gin & tonic) not En-jine. But that is being quite critical - overall an excellent & superbly presented video!

Damn, that’s slow as hell. I mean, the record sits at 1.82, and the modern record with the new low profile, 18 inch tyres is held by McLaren, at 1.92 seconds. Then there is of course also the time added due to the 80kph speed limit. I mean, the difference between a Williams and a Red Bull or ferrari can be around that time during a single lap. And these are 70 to 85(?) lap races.
