Some of the greatest athletes athletes in the world have altered their way of sleeping in order to get greater recovery as well as enhance their performance when competing. They have abandoned the traditional way sleeping in one big chunk at night and instead divided it to more than once, and there are some pretty interesting reasons as to why. So in this video I’ll explain polyphasic sleeping and how it can benefit you.
So polyphasic sleep is in the simplest terms sleeping in more than one phase opposed to monophasic sleep, which is what most people do - sleep in one big phase at night. And sleeping more than once a day might seem to be a weird new idea but in fact polyphasic sleep is as old as it gets and many animals do it naturally as well as humans, at least at first. Newborn babies are generally polyphasic before being trained to sleep all in one at night.
But one person who brought the concept of polyphasic sleeping into the world of sport was Nick Littlehales as he was convinced it would improve and optimize athletes performances and ability to recover from their intense and tight schedules. He claims that eight hours of continuous sleep isn't suited to many people as it creates unnatural rhythms and leaves workers at their most tired between 1 and 3 pm during the day. Nick suggests to listen to the body’s internal clock and break the sleep up into two or more phases rather than one big one.

In my country our culture encourages biphasic sleep. In fact my company highly recommends us employees taking a nap during lunch break. I’ve tried not having naps during the whole daytime and my brain just felt numb after about 3 p.m.

Interesting but hard to implement. I can’t really zone out at work, after work there is night classes or gym. When I do have space to take a prolonged lunch at home (I live close to work) that could mean eating in 10 mins which leaves theoretically a 50 min rest. But that’s not everyday, and this is why companies place coffee machines on every floor, so you can be an efficient robot even during 2-3 pm.

I am now 55 and have been sleeping like this since I was 22, " broken sleep " as many say ...from my " day job" was 6am-2pm... and my night gig as an entertainer....( since 1985) ..I would sleep from 11pm-4am ..then after working , I would take may 2 hr. nap from 3:30pm-5:30pm...gig done at 12mid 3x a week....it worked for me ! I get my sleep and feel GREAT ! Also as my late Great-Nana who lived to be 99 always said " sleep is #1 !! ) as well as George Burns said he slept this was most of his later years ( He lived to be 100 and was always sharp !

Of course after 270min because sleeps must not be interrupted. For a example : if you slept 2 cycle and a half of cycle u will wake up more tired than sleeping just two full Cycles (which is less time BTW)

idk if anyone still watching this video but id like to say some few words to it. I have unintentionally developd some kind of this sleep, i got diagnosted with psycosomatic disorder almost 6 years ago since my life changed from one night to the other when i had like a panic attack which caused a later on psychosis. So from then on you can say i was afraid to go to sleep and loosing my mind and the control over my body for a long time like 7-8 so i split up the day into 2 parts where i was awake for 8 hours, which where my work and my morning, mostly 9 hours til i could get sleep, then il got sleep for 3-4hours depending on energylevel after i woke up i had like the second part of the day which included meeting friends, social life, watching a movie or working ahead for my studies. So after 3 years of doing this sleep i had many different points where i was thinking like scared if i harm my body or whatever since people which are awake for 17+ hours and sleep for 8+ straight where trying to tell me that its even bad to wake up once in a night. So i wasnt sure at all but afraid that the only possible sleeping schedule without fear attacks for me is bad in general caused that i never looked it up and see if its good or not, over the years i felt very good in all parts of my life and thought every time this cant be bad you have added up in total the same amount of sleep like a "normal" person without beeing awake in one period.- Now after years of illness development i felt able to see if my sleeping is bad or nah and ending up watching this video seeing that its actual a good and healthy thing gives me so much power and chills me out not tryng to force a change in it coz somebody told me its bad even they didnt knew what they were talking about at all.. thanks for this content mate it helped me alot

This completely skips over the sleep Architecture. If you don't get deep sleep, recovery is seriously hampered and no amount of cycles will compensate for that.

If you get half to a full hour for lunch you can fit in a good 15-20 mins depending on social obligations and how fast you eat and another 30 mins after you arrive home. This can knock an hour off your night sleep and keep you fresh throughout the day without getting bogged down and wasting the time you're awake.
