The first time I saw a C-17 take off empty was the first flight out of Long Beach Airport of the YC-17. After watching a number of commercial jets take off and then the YC-17 is was very apparent what a propulsive lift can do for an aircraft.

I saw one land at Wiesbaden Army Airfield...........then it turned around without the aid of a tug truck. A while later, it took off again and I just wondered how in the heck something that big can take off from a small runway like that. Makes me curious as to whether or not they interfere with commercial flights arriving at or departing from Frankfurt. That is a seriously busy airport that's only about 15km away. It's like the Atlanta of Europe sometimes.
