The Fastest Completion of Minecraft's Hardest Mod

Many have told me that this mod is the peak of Minecraft difficulty, so I decided to give it a shot! It was a great first experience streaming as well. :D

**He used an addon that increased tick speed every time he sewed and used it a lot to get mob drops from farms quickly. While it doesn't change the great achievement of beating this mod, it does disqualify his final time.

Q: Do the pointy stick and sharp stone deal more damage?
A: No, but I sure thought they did when I was playing 💀
Q: Why don't you breed animals for food?
A: cows breed with cake, sheep with pumpkin pies, pigs with chocolate (needs milk from cows), and chickens with feed (seeds and BONES).
Q: Why wooden base?
A: wood can catch fire, but it floats, it's cheap, and mobs can't spawn on it.
Q: Why don't you just strip mine?
A: There are three layers of stone known as strata layers in BTW. The first layer can be mined with stone, the second can be mined with iron, and the third can only be mined with diamond.
Q: Why not shoot ghasts directly?
A: Ghasts can't be hit by arrows or Melee in MEA.
Q: Will you play Mea again?
A: No, nor will I play Better Than Wolves 2.1.4 ever again if I can help it XD
Q: Why didn't you push animals into holes to kill them like other people?
A: I started later than everyone else on Mea, and by then Pot_TX updated it so animals started running or attacking you if you touch them.

TIP: You can get a ton of clay at the bottom of oceans. To reach the bottom you need trap doors for air and night vision potions for darkness. Wearing a full set of armor is actually beneficial to keep you from floating. It's also really hard telling the difference between dirt and clay with night vision's redness effect so you should use a texture pack.

I will always agree with that! (hence my distaste for gregtech being called super hard) The difficulty I refer to in this mod is DST feeling survival mixed with EpicSiege on steroids. The huge grindy bit seems to overshadow the actual difficulty for most viewers unfortunately. ALSO, I'm not actually 100% whether I find RLC or BTW: MEA harder since they both play very differently, the title is actually what most ppl know the mod as on YT currently XD. I enjoy RLC more fs, but MEA had a very unique charm no modern mod has ever had.

i really appreciate the narrative pacing of this video! a lot of content these days relies on flashy editing to be 'engaging' but you've opted to use the structure of the video itself to keep the viewer interested. it's much harder to do and is IMO the real marker of quality content. and that isn't to say that your editing isn't good--it's excellent--but rather that the mark of a well made video is in the pacing rather than the effects. basically ur an artist

"...because spawn chunks are always loaded for some reason". The reason is so that the game can find a valid location to spawn you. Back in beta the bed spawn could be glitchy and, as a backup to that, Minecraft would put you at spawn, but if the chunks were not loaded beforehand the game would think there is no valid location to respawn you and crash. In modern times, this bandaid solution to a different bug would probably not be required, but I guess Microsoft decided it's not worth testing if it can be removed or sees no reason to remove it, so it will live on for now.

BTW makes me so sad. It started life as a vanilla+ tech mod, back when every mod was trying to copy IndustrialCraft/BuildCraft. No survival overhaul, no "realism", just cool new blocks and mechanics. Think like an early version of Quark, but in ~2011. It was such a breath of fresh air when everyone else was trying to play Minecraft like 3D Factorio (tho tbf Factorio didn't exist yet). Then the author had a falling out with the Forge team. I forget the details, but long story short they intentionally didn't move to Forge when the rest of the scene moved on. They intentionally kept their mod incompatible with everything else, but in the end it just ended up being left behind, before the design ideas really caught on in the mod community. Idk when BTW changed from "cool tech mod" to "suffer", but its really sad to see.

@@Magiwarriorx There's a few ways of looking at it. 1: BTW tech was innovative and cool for the time, but it served it's purpose and literally changed vanilla MC for the better. To put it bluntly however, BTW as a "tech" mod doesn't even compare to modern tech mods, which is fair to see as sad. (The devs still stand by it being tech and update it based on a vision similar to FC's own vision.) 2: While it is now known in a new light, "suffer" as you put it, at least the mods is somehow popular again despite being 13 years old. It has an amazing and unique set of survival mechanics that was overshadowed by tech in it's early years, and I think now people are finally capitalizing on the survial aspects with mods like MEA and Nightmare Mode. Imo, it's crazy to even call a game that's hardcore by default "tech" when you don't even get to tech until 20 hours of playtime. 3: The way viewers see it doesn't mean the mod itself has changed much, you can always play the mod you loved for the reasons you loved it. I'm playing it on MEA, I don't think this addon should represent the base mod. It just allows the mod to lean into the survival part a bit more which is what I and many others like. :]

@@Calebrune3 1: Oh, I won't even pretend early BTW holds a candle to what the mod scene is like these days. But other mods from the era grew legs and had a richer legacy/larger impact on the community than BTW, in huge part because they migrated to Forge and became integral to the first major modpacks (aforementioned IC/Buildcraft, Mo' Creatures, RedPower). I can't help but feel BTW could have gained even more traction/recognition if it had made the jump too, and I really wish I could have seen what that would have done to the mod scene. 2/3. I'm glad for the people who enjoy it now, but my experience with modern BTW (even without MEA) wasn't much less punishing than this. It tried to struggle through it, but it just isn't for me anymore. That said, there was a recreation of BTW for Forge called Better With Mods, I believe with the option to disable the "hardcore" features.

You have to remember here that MEA is very recent addition to a mod that's over a decade old. And I don't think anybody would anticipate that someone would elect to play BTW for the first time, with MEA, with permadeath, without spoilers about the progression. It's considerably less bad without MEA and if you respawn like normal people who aren't streamers. 😆

I hate how this mod tries to say its "Minecraft But Realistic" And then it only includes the most tedious parts of realism, without actually being realistic in so many different other areas ..

It's not that it is aiming to be realistic really, but it aims for immersive and interconnected systems. What do I mean by that? In standard Minecraft, you have many different things in the game, but a lot of them have no relation to each other. For example, you can find melons or wheat or carrots or potatoes, but it doesn't really matter which one. You just grab one type of farmable food and you are done. Same thing for animals, since all of them give you meat and have the exact same requirement to live in vanilla. In BTW, he made it so that each type has a purpose and is unlocked somewhere on the tech tree. The next thing is villages, which in normal Minecraft just are there to be robbed and to skip 1/2 of the games progression. Here villages are a part of the tech tree that you can only get to eventually. And what do I mean by immersive? Look for example at how filtering works in this mod. In other mods, especially tech mods, you would have some sort of UI to interact with that could let you program exactly how the filtering should work. It makes sense, but BTW takes a more primitive approach. They make it so that each filter behaves like an actual physical object and interacts with the hopper in such a way that each item either passes or does not pass based on its intrinsic physical properties. This makes you have to come up with some creative ideas for hopper connections depending on the items that you want to filter and it also makes you use your real world intuition more. This is immersive design.

Long comment, but I found that the death bait is discouraging me from watching the entire video, thinking that the whole 2 hours is an unsuccessful attempt. Have a chance to watch until the end because KZbin continues from where you left and my goldfish brain forgot about the bait until the end. Don’t get me wrong! This is an amazing video, one of the best of long Minecraft vid I have seen so far and I loved it. I Just want to share that the bait might keep some people from experiencing this masterpiece and… they probably don’t comeback like me (and clearly could never have left a comment, this is so survivorship bias) Hope you see this! And hope to see some comments proved me wrong that the bait keeps them here instead. Looking forward to your next video

I like that this mod motivates the player to explore the world for items to progress further and use mechanics like redstone and minecarts to make your life easier If only it was better balanced and didn't try to piss the player off, it would be a great progression mod

You will probably never see this but I'll add to the hoard. First of all, congratulations on getting this far in Better Than Wolves. I don't have the patience to play it after my dozenth death. IT was a fun video to watch. The one thing that I did want to ask was, do you ever plan on doing the sister mod to BTW, Terrafirmacraft? I personally found it to be more enjoyable, but just as hard as BTW, and thought you might like it as well. TFC itself is a better survival mod than BTW as it incorporates more realism and forces you into acting like a primitive technology video so you don't die of starvation/dehydration/freezing/heatstroke. BTW is far superior in combat and the like, but missing the difficult and interesting aspects of progressive advancement that TFC has. Even TFC is lacking in some regards to realism and progression, hence the Terrafirmagreg and Terrafirmacraft Hardrock mods. TFG is more tedious, given the gregtech portion, but it has more progression for those who like the tech aspect. Just thought you would like to hear about a new mod and give it a try if you aren't completely sick and tired of survival mods after BTW. I fell in love with TFC, and hope you do to if you give it a try!
